Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. REID, a

citizen of the United States, residing at- Winnsboro, in the county of Wood and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Sweep-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a sweep holder for plows.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of plows, more especially the means for securing a rear sweep to a plow foot or standard, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient device of great strength and durability, capable of adjustment to accommodate different kinds and sizes of rear sweeps, and adapted to effectually prevent the same from turning on the heel bolt and thereby loosening the tail nut thereof.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to keep a heel sweep straight and capable of bracing and thereby strengthening the same at its point of attachment to a plow foot or standard where the sweep is the weakest.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that vari-. ous changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a portion of a plow provided with a sweep holder, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig.4 is a transverse sectional view, taken substantially on the line :rw of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the interlocking adjustable front and rear plates.

Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.

The sweep holder comprises a pair of adjustable interlocking plates or members 1 and 2, arranged at the back of a plow foot or standard 3 and fitted against each other, their engaging faces being provided with transverse interlocking ribs 4 and 5. The ribs, which are triangular in cross section, form intervening grooves, the grooves of one plate being adapted to receive the ribs of the other plate, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. By this construction the plates 1 and 2 are interlocked and are effectually prevented from slipping on each other. The plates are secured to the foot or standard 3 by means of a heel bolt 6, piercing a shovel or blade 7 in the usual manner and provided with a tail nut 8, which engages the plate 2. 3.2.

The front plate or member 1, which is arranged in contact with the foot or standard, is provided at its lower end with a lug 9, and it has a plow stop 10 at its upper end. The lug fits between the sides of the plow foot or standard, and the plow sto which is approximately T-shaped, is 'ormed integral with the plate or member 1 and consists of an inclined stem and a head 11. The stem extends through the space between the sides of the plow foot or standard, and the head 11 engages the upper edge of the blade or shovel 7 to form a stop for the same. The blade or shovel, which has a straight upper edge to fit the plow stop, may be of any preferred form as will be readily understood.

The front plate is provided with a central opening 12 to receive the heel bolt, and the rear plate 2, which is adjustable on the front plate, is provided with a longitudinal slot 13 through which the bolt asses. The rear plate is also rovided at t e top with a pair of rearward y projecting lugs 14, spaced apart and having inclined lower edges 15 to fit against the u per edge of the heel sweep 16, as clearly ifiustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The heel sweep 16 fits against the rear face of the rear plate 2, and the said lugs 14 engage, brace and strengthen the heel sweep and revent the same from turning on the heel bo t and thereby loosening the tail nut thereof. By this construction the heel sweep is efiectually prevented from turning, and the sweep holder is adjustable to fit various kinds and sizes of heel sweeps.

The device is also adapted to be used simply as a plow stop, when it is not desired to equip the plow with a heel sweep, it being then necessary to raise the rear plate sufficiently to permit the tail of the nut to clear the lugs 15.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. The combination with a plow standard, and a heel bolt, of a sweep holder secured to the standard by the said bolt and provided with a rearwardly projecting lug, and a heel sweep fitted against the outside of the sweep holder and secured to the same by the heel bolt and engaged by the said rearwardly projecting lug and held against rotary move-- ment on the bolt by the said lug.

2. The combination with a plow standard, a sweep, and a heel bolt, of a sweep holder secured to the plow standard by the heel bolt and composed of two adjustable plates or members provided with means for engaging the plow standard and the sweep.

3. The combination with a plow standard, a sweep, and a heel bolt, of a sweep holder secured to the plow standard by the heel bolt and composed of two adjustable plates or members provided, respectively, with means for engaging the plow standard and the sweep, and a plow stop carried by one of the plates and extending through the plow standard for engaging a blade or shovel.

4. A heel sweep for plows comprising two adjustable interlocking plates, one of the plates being provided with forwardly projecting means for engaging a plow standard, and the other plate having rearwardly projecting means for engaging a heel sweep.

5. A sweep holder comprising front and rear adjustable plates fitted together and provided at their engaging faces with interlocking teeth whereby the plates are interlocked, and means projecting from one of the plates for engaging a heel sweep.

6. A sweep holder for plows comprising a front plate provided at the bottom with means for engaging a plow standard and having a forwardly projecting plow stop at the top, and a rear late adjustably interlocked with the front plate and provided with rearwardly projecting lugs for engaging a heel sweep.

77 A swee holder for plows comprising a front plate aving an opening to receive a heel bolt and provided with means for engaging a plow standard, and a rear plate having means for engaging a heel sweep and provided with a longitudinal slot to receive the heel bolt, said plates being fitted together and provided at their engaging faces with interlocking means for preventing one plate from turning 011 the other.

8. The combination with a low standard, and a heel bolt, of a sweep holder secured to the standard by the said bolt and provided at its top with a pair of spaced projecting lugs, and a heel sweep fitted against the outside of the sweep holder and secured to the same by the heel bolt and located beneath and having its upper edge engaged by the said lugs, whereby the sweep is prevented from turning on the said bolt.
