Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1902.
Application flled'Juue 7, 1906. Serial No. 320,659.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, limou'r E. Hocnns, a citizen of the llnited States, residing at South Manchester, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Tobacco Products and Processes of Manufacturing the same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a process of manufacturing tobacco-sheets or boards, andto the product of said may be.utilized for various purposes, al' though primarily designed for use-in the manufacture of tobacco-boxes or other rece tacles Where it is desired to preserve the 'odbr of tobacco. i
In carrying out the improved process, tobacco-stcms, stalks, or other tobacco-refuse are severed into small pieces by any desired means, for instance, an ordinary rag-cutting machine, and this tobaoco-waste is then placed in a boiler or digester, commingled with chemicals, if necessar and is thoroughly macerated. From this (ligestcr the mass is next Jlaced in a heating or refining-engine, and the fibers thereof are broken u into very small particles or filaments ready or the subsequent steps of the process. Atthis stage, a certain amount of other fibrous inaterial, which has already been beaten so that the fibers will properly mix with the tois added to the mass, this extra strengthen or harden said mass, and, according to the amount of fibrous material added, being governed by the result sought to be obtained in the fin-' ished )flfllllfil). Pulp from tobacco-waste if l produce a soft or punky by incorporating therewith product, but
such as those of cotton,
vegetable-lihers, linen, wood, jute, desired degree of may be obtained. While the materials are being commingled mg extract, for instance, that ma clays to make it dense. In other words, the mixing or incorporatin with the mass of different materials shoult l be accomplished at this stage of the process. i
From the beating and commingling ma chine, the pu p is carried to ordinary paperprocess, which product snuff, &c.
bacco-pro bacon-product SlSfll or other substance the hardness in the product sired flavorof tobacco, I may be added, and the mass may be sized to (c it waterproof, or it may be loaded with making apparatus. If the pulp is'submitted to a Fourdrinier machine the product will be thin, and when thick paper or paper-board is required it should be run through a cylinder machine. the product is dried in an suitable manner to expel all moisture, an finally, it is run through calender-rolls to impart a, smooth and finished ap earance to'the same.
While vegeta cotton or linen, are deemed preferable for hardening and strengthening pur oses, leathoi scragor other-animal materia may sometimes employed for accomplishing these results, i
In the manner described a tobacco-sheet or board of any degree of hardness desired, and having and retaining the odor of tobacco, may be manufactured, and this. prod uct may be utilized in various ways. If of the thickness-of paper-board, boxes or receptacles of various kinds may be manufacturcd'from. it, and these boxes will have a tobacco-odor, and will be usefulfor holdmg various articles, particularly tobacco products, such as cigars, chewing-tobacco,
My invention is not limited to the exact procedure set forth,-nor to a productfof any especial degree ofthickness.
I claim is:-
1'. The
not consisting of first macerating tobacco, then addingthereto fibrous mate rial, then comminglmg therewith tobacco? liquor; and finally expressing the moisture and forming the massinto a product of the desired degreeof thickness;
2. As. an article of manufacture, a tocomposed of tobacco-pulp,
and fibrous material,"'commingled and treated with tobacco liquor in the manner,
substantially as described; I
i 1'3. an article of manufacture," a' tobacco-shcet or board composed of pulp made from tobacco-refuse eoinmingled W1 th 11 brous pulp and a flavoring-extract 1n substantial y the manner described; In testimony whereof I in presence of two witnesses;
" KNLGHT E. ROGERS.
Witnesses LOUIS Sr. 0. Bean, THOMAS Jonas.
In the next stage of the'proccss le fibers, especially those of Having thus described the invention what recess of manufacturing a to-.
