UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEicE.'`
PEARL I. SCOTT AND ARTHUR E. OORBETT, OF OGDEN, UTAH.
WATER-GAGE.
To a/ZZ whom it 'may concern:
Beit known that we, PEARL I. SCOTT and ARTHUR E. CORBETT, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Ogden, in the county of Weber and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Water-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto improvements in water gages for steam boilers, and particularly for locomotive and other boilers employed upon traveling vehicles wherein the water gage is subjected to strain from the motion of the vehicle g the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character' which is simple of construction, durable and eilicient in use, and not liable to be easily broken from the motion of the vehicle or careless usage.
In the accompanying drawing,-ligure 1 is a front elevation of a gage embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical front to rear section through the-same. Figs. 3 and 4 are horizontal sections on lines 3 3 and 4 4 of Fig. 1.
In accordance with our invention, the gage is made of approximately triangular form in horizontal cross-section and comprises a back section in the form of a plate l and a Ve shaped front section 2, the edges of the section 2 being arranged to overlap the edges of the plate 1 and secured thereto by screws or other preferred fastenings 3. The waterreceiving or gage chamber thus formed by the two sections is closed at top and bottom by triangular heads 4 fastened thereto by screws 3 or in any other preferred manner.
The heads 4 are provided with screw threaded openings for the reception of the proximate threaded ends of tubes or pipes 5 connecting the gage with the boiler, or with couplings of a suitable character attaching the gage to such tubes or pipes. The sides or angularly related portions of the front section 2 are provided with observation openings 6, closed by the sides or angularly related ortions of a V-shaped prism glass 7. This g ass has its rear edges arranged at the Specification of Letters Patent.

two rear corner angles of the gage, and is clamped between the sections 1 and 2 by the action of the securing screws 3. The front of the glass is smooth-surfaced, but the rear or inner face thereof is preferably ribbed or corrugated to increase the strength and resistance of the plate to strains. Suitable packing 8 is provided between the joints of the parts to render them wateretight.
In practice, the water enters the gage through the lower pipe 5, and its level may be conveniently determined from either side of the front of the gage by visual observation througheither opening 6 and the glass 7, and as the body of the gage is mainly constructed of two metallic sections it will be apparent that a strong and durable type of gage is provided which is not liable to be injured by the motions of the vehicle or from careless usage.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1, A water gage comprising a back section, an angular front section provided in its side with observation openings, heads closing the upper and lower ends of the water-receiving chamber formed 'by said sections, the parts being suitably united, and an angular glass held between said sections and covering the observation openings.
2. A water gage comprising a back section, a V-shaped front section secured at its edges to the back section, the sides of said front section being formed with observation openings, heads closing the upper and lower ends of the chamber formed by said sections and suitably constructed for the attachment of pipe connections thereto, and .a V-shaped glass secured'in position by the fastenings connecting the front and back sections with its sides covering said observation openings.
In testimony whereof, we afliX our signa- J. C. NYE, MARIE DEN HAETOG.
