Description

No. 888,562 PATENTED MAY 26, 1908.
' E. E. WIGZELL.
' STAMP VENDING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 15, 1908.
Sumac won Wit" eases r placed the postage stain I EUSTACE E. WIGZELL, or LONDON, "ENGLAND-.1
To all whom it may'concem:
. Be it known that I, EUSTACE E. WIGZELL, a subset of the King of Great Britain and Ire-' lan and resident of Billiter House, Billiter street, London, E. C., England, engineer, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Stamp-Vendin Machines, of which the following is a 'spec' cation.
I have a'plate of metal or other suitable material upon which the working parts of this machine are mounted. On acontainer reel is wound two tapes in between which. are
continuous lengths. is container reel is fixed opposite two drawing and delivery roll-v ers between which the-tapes are led, the top tape passing round the to drawing and delivery roller and upwar s round a guide roller on to a drawing-in reel which is driven by a band off the top drawing and delivery roller. The bottom tape-passing downwards round the bottom drawing and delivery roller and over a guide roller or rollers on to a drawing-in reel which is also driven by a stamps the drawi band from the top drawing and delivery roller. The tapes are'guided intheir respective'. travels by metal troughs or channels fixed where necessary. The bottom, drawing and delivery roller is fixed on a lever lpivoted near the roller for closing the two ro ers together or separating them for the purpose of char ing the machine, the'stamps' being inserte in the opening in the front of the machine (referred to hereunder) and between the two drawing and delivery rollers so that when the container reel is; turned round it draws in the stamps and unwindsthe tape from the two drawing-in reels.
- On the other side of the ma hine and fitted to the shaft carrying the top rawing and de livery roller, I have a lever with ratchet wheel so that when this lever is moved a given distance it turns the drawing and deivery rollers pulling the tapes and revolving the reel on which the tapes are wound a space equal to the length'orfwidth of a posta e stamp, causing'one stamp only "to rotru e through an o ening (as referred to a ove) in the front" of tlie'machine, where it can be detached ready for use. Y
The lever is locked by. a bolt which can be released upon an a propriate coin being inserted in a slot in t e machine, or a counter can be attached so that upon every stroke of the lever a point would be registered to keep a tally of the number of stamps extracted.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February is, 1908. Serial No. 416,151:
in both figures.
s either singly or inthe tapes with the stain Patented ma 28, 1908.
specification as partthereof.
Figure 1 is a side view showing the parts on one side of a divisional frame plate and Fig. 2 is a like view showing the parts on the other side of thesame frame plate. Like reference characters refer t like parts In Fig.- 1 A. 's the plateuponwhich the .working parts -of the machine are mounted.
'A is the 'containerreel placed opposite the two drawin .and delivery rollers H F, t e ta es B an O passing between these rollers de ivering the stamps D at the front of the machine." The top tape (1 passing round the drawin and delivery roller H and upwards round t eguide roller 15' on to the drawing-in reel J which is driven b a band I off the drawing and delivery ro ler H, the-bottom tape B passing downwards round the drawing roller F and the guide roller E on to the drawing-in reel K'which is worked by a band L from the drawing andjdelivery roller H.
For charging the machine. with ostage and delivery ro er F is pivoted to a lever at Pso that by slackeningout the screw M the lever can be lifted up in the slot N taldng A l sheet of drawings accompanies this 7 and the lever is pivoted the pressure if the drawingand delivery rollers H. F. The channels'on troughs for guidi the ta e or tapes are shown at O. In ig. 2 indicates the ratchet wheel with teeth atgiven distances apart equal to the length or width of a postage stain This ratchet wheel is keyed onto ashaft which in turn is keyed at the other side of the machine to the drawing and delivery roller HJFig. 1. Over this'shaft B there is a loose. sleeve S with an arm U to'which a awl V is attached and which works the rate et wheel Ke ed on the loose sleeve S. I have a lever so that'when this lever is pushed for-' ward it turns the ratchet wheel Q pulling the two tapes B and C with the stamps D in between off the container reel A so that one stamp only will protrude fromthe opemng at the front of the machine at eve stroke of the lever where it can be detac ed ready for use.
For regulating the distanceof the travel-of s in between, the arm U on the loose sleeve .comes against the -'sto X and on its downward motion comes against the stop Y giving a fixed distance for its travel. There IS an arm T fixed on the loose sleeve S at the end of which there is a other against the stop 0 When an appro priate coin is insertedm the chute D it presses down the bolt A releasing the arm U and on the lever E being drawn down by the rod F attached to the arm U it lifts up the chute D throwing the coin over the stop C the bolt- A falling back'into its former position,v re venting the lever W from bein moved b the arm U, the boltbeing resse against the stop C Should a smal er coin be passed through the chute D it falls through the'hole in the bolt G and down the chute H and is 'then thrown out at the front of the'inachine. To facilitate turning the rolls H and F backward, in charging the machine: with stam s, a'vertical slide U, Fig. 2, slidably attac ed to the frame late A, is arra ed to contact with the stu V projecting rigidly from the heel end of the pawl V when the pawl carrier formed by the arm U is in its retracted position represented in Fig. 2, so as to lift the toe end of the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet wheel Q, and thus to free-this wheel and the shaft R and roll H which turn therewith.
It will be seen that this machine can be ada ted for postage stamps of any face value aving now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a stamp vending machine, the com bination with a hand lever and means for the arm U and the means for turning stamps are carried,
fastening the s'amein diflerent ositionsof a pair of feed rolls between whic the stamps are inserted and delivered and one of which feed rolls is movable toward and away from the other feed roll by means of said lever, said feed rolls step by step to deliver the stam s, two tapes which pass around said feed rol I a reel common to both tapes and to which one end of each tape is attached, take-up reels to which the other ends of theta es respectively are attached, means for gui ing said-tapes, and means for transmitting motion to said take-up reels simultaneously from the feed roll last, named.
2. In a stamp vending machine, the combinationof a pair of feedrolls between which the stamps are inserted and delivered, meansfor turning said feed rolls includin an oscil lating p'awl'carrier movable aroumf the shaft of one of said rolls and a ratchet wheel faston saidi shaft, a spring interacting with said pawl carrier and rendering the same normally retracted, a pair of stops interacting alternately with a art of said pawl carrier, and means for locliing and unlockin said pawl carrier, substantially as! herein efore specifiedf I I In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the p resence of two witnesses, this 23rd day of January, 1908.
