F. H. WEFTGUMK APPLICATION ULEB FRANK H. WI'IITCOMB, Ol" MARION, INDIANA.
PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rammed May 19, 190e.
Application flied May 10. 1907,r -Serial No 372,858.
To all, whom it may concern:
' Bo 1t known that l, FRANK ll. WinT- COMB, a c ltlzen of the United States, residing at Marion, in the count)l ot Grant and State reference, 41 designates a casing winchmay ol" India-na, hare invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to pumps and is more particularly designed forl dispensing liquids in predetermined quantities and for indicating the cost oi' the amount of liquid discharged.
The invention is more particularly designed for neasurmg coal oil, gasolene, lubricating and inadmie oils, and other liqids which are tree ot acids.
he apparatus is also designed, with slight modifications, to he used as a force )ump designed' to be actuated either hy hand, wind, or engine power and suitable i'or use in mines and reservoirs to draw water therefrom.
One of the objects of the invention is to )rovide a device of this character which can lue readily connected to a suitable source. of supplyand when actuated is designed to cause. a predetermined quantity of liquid toy be withdrawn 'from the supply and discharged at a suitable point.
A still further object is to provide apparatus which is at all times in condition to force -Water therethrough, said apparatus he- 1nur constructed so as to automatically rcceive li uid from the supply-while other liquid is icing d ischargcd.
Another object is to provide a scale whereby the cost of dispensed liquid will bel accu rately indicated. This is particularly desirable Where. the apparatus used for dis- )easing oils, etc.
Vl-Tith these and other ohjectsin view the invention consists ot` certain novel features of construction and combinations of Aparts Wliich will he hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings is shown the. preferred form of the invention, the saine being designed for dispensing-oils and the like. v
ln said drawings: Figure l is a vertical section through the apparatus embodying the present improvements. Fig, 2 is an elevation of the rear portion of the indicator and its actuating meansg Fig. 3 is a view part-lv in section and 'partly'in elevation showing a. modified means for transmitting motion to ,tion ol" which is located a cylinder 2.
the piston; Fig. l is a view partly in sect-ien and partlyin elevation ot' the crank and roller i'or actuatingI the device shown in Fig. 3`
Referringl to the ligures hy characters of por- The heads 3 and 4 ot this cylinder are clamped upon the ends thereof hv means of holtev One of the heads has a gland 7 through which a piston rod 49 extends. Suitahl)Y connected to thc cylinder 2 is a valve casing 1l) having a he suitahly ornamented and in the lower centrally arranged port 11 and provided also with ports 12 and 13 at opposite sides of the port 11. A slide valve 5l is mounted within the casing 1() and is so constructed that when the san-ic is shifted in one direction ports 11 and 12% are placed in connnunication and port 12 is openedinto casing 1U, whereas it' the valve is shifted in the opposite direction port 13 is opened into the valve casing1r a'nd ports l1 and l2 placed in communication. A pipe 2U extends from port 13 to'the lower portion ol cylinder 2 and another pipe 21 extends from port 12 Oto the upper portion of said c vlinder. A feed pipe 22 opens into the valve casingT lt) and extends from supply tankor barrel, not shown. A discharge pipe 23 extends ironi the port l1 and ahove the casing 4] where it terminates in a nozzle 24. The casing or housing 41 has a top l2 prorided with a casing 43. Within this casing is mounted a small drive gear ist designed tohe actuated h v a crank l5, and a. large gear 46. A crank 47 is rotated h v this gear 4h and drives a pitman 48 which is pivotallv connected to the rod 49 oi piston 5t). A sliding valve 51 which is similar to valve 1li has a rod 52 provided with adjnstahle stops 53 between which is slida-hly mounted an actuating arm 54 extending from rod 4). A casing 55 is mounted on the top 42 an d rotat ably mounted in rear thereof is a dial 56 having ratchet teeth 57. adapted to lie successivelyY engaged hfv a pawl. 58 movable with the rod 52. Projecs tions 5*.) extend from the dial and are designed to actuate a resilient stem ou carrying a clapper 61 disposed to strike a hell 62. When the gear Ltst is rotated the crank 47 reciprocates rod 49 and piston. 50 and each time the arm 54 moves upward or downw ard with the piston it strikes one of the stops 53 andshifts the valve. At the same time one of the pawls 5S engages a tooth on ratchet 57 on the dial so that a character will appear a suitable g These teeth are fg, nemen crunk 6.5 which ir; mounted in the saune nnniner nu, und in similar lo the crunk 47. 'Oh-- viously when the crzudi 'G5 rotates the roller .64 will. travel' hack nud Forth between the cross heads and the reeiprocntory 'movement of the piston is produced..
