To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO CAESAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the I and Improved Window-Cleaner, of which the following 1s a full, clear, an'd'exact descrip tion. a
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved window cleaner, arranged to permit convenient and thorough cleaning of the window sash, both on the inslde and outside, and without the slightest danger to the operator.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinframe after and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the nvention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvernent as applied; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an'enlarged inverted plan view of the improvement, npart being shown in section; Fig. 4 is an e ar'ged seetional side elevation of the outer wiping device; Fig. 5 is a front view of the inner wiping device,-and Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the improvement on the line 66 of Fig. 3.
The main frame A of the window cleaner is U-shaped and consists of the middle bar A. and the side arms A, A ada ted to straddle the window sash B, as pla' y'illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, that is, the side arm A extendin on the outside of the window sash, while t e side arm A is on-the inside of the window sash, and the cross bar A is arranged transversely below the bottom of the partly open sash. The middle bar A of the main A is provided at itsends with trunnions A enga g a bearing 0 mounted to slide on a rod extending between the sides of the window frame B, and provided at its ends withangular arms D, D having longitudinally extendin trunnions D, D adapted to engage keepers and E, referably in the form of sockets, secured to t e parting strips -B on the sides ,of the window frame B, as
lainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. Now by ha the angular arms D, D the rod D may e readily'brought directly under the lower sash, as indicated in Figs. 1- and 2; or
the rod may be swung outward, so as to bring the same directly under the upper sash, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Thus by the arrangement described, the device can be brought into proper alinement with the lower sash when it 1s desired to clean the latter, as hereinafter more fully described.
The outer or free end of the side arm A of the main frame A is provided with a bearing for the transverse pivot F of a swing arm F, and the outer end of the side arm A of the main frame A is provided with a bearing for the transverse pivot G ofa'swing arm G,'the swing arms F and G being provided with wipers H and I adapted to engage the glass pane of the window sash, to wipe, rub and clean the same both at the inside and outside of the window, andfsimultaneously, if desired.
Now in order to actuate the outer swim arm F in unison with the inner swing arm controlled by the operator, the pivotal ends of the swing arms F and G are provided with drums orgrooved pulleys J and J, on which winds a ca le, rope or like flexible connection K, also passing over a set of tension pulleys K held on the side arm A and over sets of guide pulleys K K and K, K journaled on the cross bar A of the main frame A, adj acent to the corresponding side arms A A The ends of the cable K are rigidly secured to one of the drums J or J, so as to ractically render the cable endless, and by mounting the tension pulleys K on a frame K held adjustably on the side arm A it is evident that the desired tension can be given -to the cable K, and hence when a swinging motion is given to the swing arm G then the cable K is caused to travel. and to impart a like swinging motion to the swing arm F, so that the latter moves in unison with the swing arm G.
, Now inorder to manipulate the device a simultaneous swin ing motion is given by the operator to t e side arm A and the swing arm G, which are both rovided for this purpose with suitable hand es L and L, adapted to be taken hold of by the operator with both hands. Now on swinging the main frame A and at the same time im arting a simultaneous swin ingmotion to oth swing arms G and F, it is evident that each and every part of the pane of the window sash can e reached by the wipin devices H and I, in order to clean the same oth at the inside and outside. Now by the arrangement described the wiper I is pressed into engagement with the inside of the window pane by the action of the spring I", and whenever it is desired not to make use of this wiper I it is only necessary for. the operator to swing the arm 1 outward and engage the same with thespringcatch I to hold the wiper in an inactive position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3. It is evident, however, that when the wiper is in its inactive potion, the arm G and frame A are manipu lated in the same manner as previously mentioned, so as to cause the outer wiper H to clean the outer face of the window pane whenever it is desired to do so.
It will also be noticed that by the o erator moving the bearing ,0 lengthwise on t' e supporting rod D and swinging the frameA as retractable trunnion 13 (see Fig. 3) the supporting rod 1) can be readily enga ed with or disengaged from the keepers E, 15, to allow ready use of the device on any window, and
to permit convenient disengagement of'the devicefrom one window and transferring it to another window. I
In order to prevent a too easy sliding of spring G maybe employe attached to the bearing 0 and (pressing on the supporting rod 'the bearing 0 on the supporting rod D, a

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1 A window cleaner comprising a guideway for attachment to the window casing, a bearing slidably mounted on the said guideway,
a U-shapcd rock frame havingdts middle portion fulcrumed on the .said bearing, the side arms of the frame straddling the window sash, swing arms mounted to swing onthe free ends of the said side arms, ,and means connecting the said swin other by way of the said afne.
2. A window cleaner*comprising a guideway for attachment to the window casing, a bearing slidably mounted on the said guideway, a U-shaped rock frame having its middle portion fulcrumed on the said bearing, the side arms of the frame straddling the window sash, swing arms mounted to swing on the free ends of the said side arms, means connecting thesaid swing arms with each other by may of the said frame, and wipers on the ends of the said swing arms.
3. A window cleaner comprising aguideway for attachment to the window casing, a bearing slidably mounted on the said guideway, a, U-shaped rook frame having'its middleportion fulcrumed on the said bearing,
the side arms of the frame straddling the window sash, swing arms mounted to swing on the free ends of the said side arms, means connecting the said swing arms with each other b way of the said frame, wipers on the ends of the swing arms, and means for holding one of the wipers in inactive position.
4. A window cleaner comprising a guideway for attachment to the window casing, a bearing slidably mounted on the said guideway, a U-shaped rock frame having its 'midarms with each dle portion fulcrumed on the said bearing,

A window cleaner comprising a guideway for attachment to the window casing, a bearing slidably mounted on the said guideway, a U-sha'ped rock frame havin its middle portion fulcrumed on the sai bearing, the side arms of the framestraddling the window sash, swing arms mounted to swing on the free ends of the said side arms, drums fixed on thefulcrum ends of'the said swing arms, guide pulleys on the middle portion of the said frame, and-a cable passing around the said drums and pulleys.

7. A window cleaner provided with a swing frame for straddling the window sash, swing arms fulcrumed on the said frame, drums on the fulcrum ends of the said swing arms, and a cable passing around the said drums and extending along the said frame.
8. A WllldOW cleaner provided with a swing frame for straddling the window sash, swing arms fulcrumed on the said frame, drums on the fulcrum ends of the said swing arms, a cable passing around the said drums and extending alon the said frame, and a wiper adjustably hek on the outermost swing arm.
9. A'window cleaner provided with a swing frame for straddling the window sash, swing arms fulcrumed on the said frame, drums on the fulcrum ends of the said swing arms, a cable passing around the said drums and extending along the said frame, a wiper adjustably held on the outermost swing arm, and a wiper mounted to swing transversely on the innermost swing arm.
10. A window cleaner provided with a swing frame for straddling the window sash, swing arms fulcrumed on the said frame, drums on the fulcrum ends of the said swing arms, a cable passing around the said drums and extendin along the said frame, a wiper adjustablyhe ld on the outermost swing arm,
a wiper mounted to swing transversely on the innermost swin arm, and locking means for holding the said wiper on the innermost swingarm in an active or non-active position.
11. A window cleaner provided with a swing-frame for straddling the window sash, swing arms fulcrumed on the said frame, drums on the fulcrum ends of the said swing arms, a cable passing around the said drums and extending alon the said frame, and a' a ti htening device For tightening the said ca le.
12. A window cleaner provided with a suport comprising keepers on the window A rame, a rod rovided with transverse arms,
and longitudmally extending trunnions on the said arms for engagement with the said keepers.
13. A window cleaner provided with a support comprising keepers on the window frame, a rod provi ed with transverse arms, and longitudinally extending trunnions on the said arms for engagement with the said kfiilepers, one of the trunnions being retracta e.
14. In a window cleaner, a swing frame, arms pivoted to the frame, means for swinging thearms in unison, wiper carryin members carried by said arms, one of t e said members being pivoted, and means for holding the said pivoted member in inactive position. A V
