Patented April 28, l-l
Application illed September 39, 190'?. SeriallNc. 395,123?"` To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS GRACE, a sub-- ject of the King of Great Britain, residing at No. 20 Ivy street, Darlington, near Sydney, y Wales and Gone monwealth of Australia, inventor, have invented new and useful improvements in Sheep-Shearing Machines, of 'Jvhich the fol lowing is a specification.
' This invention relates to certain improvements in sheep shearing machines.
Heretofore the tension orn the cutter upon the comb of sheep shearing machines has been a plied by means of a screw (with milled earl) protruding through and above the head or iront top casing of such machines audit has been found th at such screw 'with its head is an obstruction to theI progress of vthe machine through the lleece-and at the same time disturbs and tears the wool to its depreciation. And this invention has been spe ciall r devised in order that uneven and easily regu ated tension of the cutter upon the comb of such machines may be applied without the necessity of this obstructing and dangerous device. And it has been further devised in'order to produce such a machine shears eilective in operation while at the saine time its various parts are each simple inconstruction and cheap in cost and further may be quickly and easily interchanged for others of the same pattern. But in order that this invention may be clearly understood reference Will 'now be made to the drawing herewith in which Figure l'is a plan ot' a sheep shearing machine constructed according to these present improvements. FigsQ is a central sectional elevation 'of the samef Fig'. 3 apartial plan with co'rnb and plate removed. Fig; 4 a plan on the line 4-4 of the tension devices and Fig. a erspective view of the tension- Wedge Whi e Figs. 6 7 and 8 are transverse sectional elevations on lines 6-6 7 7" and 8-8 respectively across the other figures.
Unlike other similar machines the casing of the drivinf mechanism of this sheep shearing machine as no cover opposite to its op erating face but it has a removable plate or base 9 toiwhieh is secured by screuhs l0 the comb 11 which is of ordinary construction. The cutter 12` of ordinary construction reciprocates upon this comb and is tensioned to .also a central concave seating l?. so t its Work and actuated' in the manner hereinafter (ilescribed. l. y y
The plate or .beset3 the whole o actuating mechanisn'i und thereof is a c.\u'ceve seatng or rec over Which springs an srch or bridge i secured screwsl to said base 9., The bridge 14 hss spherical bearing is yformed for a 's bulb 18 on the o} erating.leter lill ensblin such lever to rock or have motion require in every direction. f'i his lever i9 has a for 19 at its rear end Whichembraces the ball 2 en a stud 2l in the disk 22 screwed on to the end 23 on shaft 24 and at its forward end has three lingers 25 with pintles 26 taking into cutter l2. The bridge 14 has a forward projection 27 to Whichis knuckle-jointed at 28 the tension liep 2Q on the operating 'face of 4which' is ball 30 between it and the operating fork 19 vcarrying the cutter AY wed c )ieee 3l takes between said .tien
Z9 and. the end et the casing i6 and in the back end 33 oi said Wedge 33, is the recess 3% in Which rides the screw by .means of which the pressure oi the cutter 12 on the comb ll or the tension" of' thermecliine regulated. rlhis screw 35 has a milled head 36 inte one or other of theilutes ot' which the spring 37 engages 'to secure said screw freni moving after regulation. The forward bearing of the shait24 is athinible 235 having race erw-av E39 for the antifrictionballs 40 which thimbA s held in lace by the screw 4l. The handle 42 may c of piping sweated into the end. pieces or it may Yterm part of the The back end el' the handle and the shaft as well as the universal coupling are oi any or diunry well known construction. l
' In the late or buse 9 is an oriiice 43' through vriiich lubricant may be su pplied to the v vorking parte. At the back end lubricant -is supplied througlnoriliees or waysu 4 and by {iues 45 to both ein ls of the back bear ing. rThe shaft' 2d bciuvv" revolved the machi-ne is operated its orcinnrily the lever' 1) being reci roest-ed and operating the cutter 12.. The ever i9 being tree on its spherical bulb-S the tension regulated by reu' 3%.-3 is evenlyv distrilnited by means oi wedge lap about centrally' 29 and ball 30 at all parts of the stroke wer the cutter l2 on the comb il and iusu goed' clean out.' All parte srehandily i comb, a cutter thereon, an operating lever tlon, and means for adjusting the vet-at-able by removing theconib 11,(after I casing, and a screw assing through the casscrews 10) and then removing the ing and engaging t e wedge to adjust the 2:, base 9b taking out screws 46 and 47 when l position of the same, substantially as dethe Who e of. the parts exceptthe crank stud scribed. 21 and its ball 20 the disk 22 and the tension 3. A sheep shearing machine, comprising a screw 35 may leave the casing 16 and hancasing, a removable Abase plate therefor, a dle 42. comb on said base plate, a cutter, an operat` 30 Having now particularly described and asing lever for said cutter, a spherical bul-b on ce'rtaihed the nature of my said invention said operating lever, a bridge holding vthe and in 'what manner the same is to be perspherical bulb on the base plate, a hinged flap formed I declare that what I claim is z` secured to said bridge, a ball between said.
1. A sheep shearing machine comprising a flap and lever, a wedge between said fia casing, and a screw .passing through said) cas ing and engaging with the flap, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my' naine to this specification in the presence ol 40 twousubscribing witnesses.
THOMAS GRACE.
oosening for the cutter, a hinged portion, a ball between said hinged portion and lever, a casing, a'wedge between said casing and hinged porosition of the Wedge, substantially as descri ed.
2. A sheep shearing machine, comprising a l casing, a comb removably held therein, a cutter on said comb, an operating lever for the cutter, a hinged flap, a ball between said flap and lever, a Wedge between the flap and j f Witnesses: y FRED WALSH,
