SEWING-MACHINE SHUTTLE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented April 2s, 190e.
Application led May 23, 1907. Serial No. 375,269.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. ZANZIG, a citizen of the United StateS, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machine Shuttles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The object of my invention is to providea Simple and effective attachment to sewingrnachines for preventing shuttles from skipping, due to wear of a bearing-face of a shuttle7 the consequence of which causes-the shuttle to become loose in its seat, thereby resulting in imperfect alinement with relation to the machine-needle, so that in the travel of said shuttle it fails to catch the thread delivered thereto by the needle, and thus causes the machine to skip stitches said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts as fully set forth hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a Shuttle-holder or guide having iitted therein a shuttle B of the oscillating type, which Shuttle is driven by a Spanner C secured to a rock-shaft D in the usual manner. The Shuttle-holder or guide is provided with an annular seat a, having a shouldered face o for the reception of the Shuttle, a face c of which abuts the shouldered face b of the holder, there being a fragmental ring d engaging the opposite face c of said shuttle for holding the Same in its seat, the ring being held in osition on the holder A by dowels e and a c amp f secured to said holder by a screw g as Shown. As indicated by the arrows in Figs. l and 3, the needle enters the holder adjacent to the face c of the shuttle, the point h of which is adapted to engage the thread and form the loop, which in its fordue thereto results in a wabble of said shuttle, which fre uently drops away from the line of the needle and fails to catch the thread delivered thereby. To overcome the above defects, due to wear, I provide a clip 1 arranged to be snapped over the hub of the Spanner C. The clip is preferably stamped from a single piece of spring-metal, its bodyportion 2, which engages the Spanner, comprising a shell like sector having elongated tangential fingers 2 adapted to straddle and grip the Spanner-arm, thus preventing twisting of said shell on said Spanner.
Ears 3 which are bent in from the Shell and engage the inner face of the Spanner thus prevent the end-thrust of the clip in opposition to tension exerted by a Spring-arm 4, which arm projects from Said clip and has a conicalhead 5 that engages the central portion of the shuttle-web E. The spring-arm 4 con.- sists of a flat leaf-extension forming part of the clip, the arm being bent inward So that its conical head 5 is in axial alinement with the rock-Shaft D and also the shuttle, upon which said spring-arm exerts pressure to hold the same to its Seat with the least possible friction, owing to its head being concentric with the moving parts.
By the above described arrangement, it will be Seen that the face c of the Shuttle may wear off indefinitely without effecting the relation of point h thereof to the needle, the Spring being always under Suiiicient ten- Sion to hold the shuttle intact, thus increasing the life of a Shuttle, which, in practice heretofore, had to be renewed frequently, thereby causing much loSS of time and expense. The tension exerted upon the segmental web of the shuttle by the conical head 5, is Such that'it readily yields to permit passage of the thread between said head and shuttle without aecting the operation of the machine. l
While I have shown and described my invention 'in connection with an oscillating shuttle, it is understood that the same is a plicable to any form of Shuttle wherein t e clip may be attached So that arm 4 be interposed between the shuttle and drivingmechanism therefor to produce the desired result.
While I have shown and described the spring-clip as formed from a single blank, it is obvious that the same may be made in more than one piece, the essential 'feature being any form of spring provided with means for attachment to the driving-mechanism of a sewing-machine shuttle without previous cutting or iitting, the device being in the form ol an attachment that can be adjusted to a machine by simply snapping it in place.
I claim:
1. In a shuttle mechanism, having a shuttle-guide, a rotary shuttle iitted in the guide, a segmental web extending from the body of the shuttle to a point concentric With the aXis thereof, and a drive-shaft 'for the shuttle concentric with the same; the combination of a flat spring detachably connected to the drive-shaft, the spring being provided with a conical head concentric with said drive-shaft, and adapted to impinge against the Web of the shuttle. 2. In a shuttle mechanism, having shuttle-guide, a rotary shuttle -fitted in the guide, a segmental web extending from the body of the shuttle to a point concentric With the axis thereof, and driving mechanism for the shuttle concentric with the same;
