FRANKLIN D. SICKLES, OF MAUMEE, OHIO.
INVALID-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application led November 30, 1906. Serial No. 345,676.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN D. SICKLEs, of Maumee, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in InvalidhSupports and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which4 it appertains,to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to invalid supports, and it has for its object to provide an attachment for a bed or cot which shall embody an adjustable back section capable of supporting the invalid in reclining or any inclined To this end the invention embodies the novel combination arrangement and details of construction hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improved support with the table section thereof elevated, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the support, showing the back section lowered, the structure assuming this form when it is to be carried or stored away Fig. 3 is a front view of the support with the back section elevated as in Fig. l; Fig. 4 is a view of the shouldered or notched cross or guide rod for the lower end of the braces for the back section.
Referring. to the details, 1 indicates the base of the support, the same being constructed of a rear frame 2 and parallel side frame 3. At the forward ends of the frames 3 are pivotally secured the side frames 4 of the adjustable back section 5, there being also pieces 6 attached to the back section and spaced apart from the frames 4 to receive the supports 7.for a table 8. The supports 7 are guided to prevent lateral movement between the frames 6 and 4, and at their ends they are detachably secured as at 9 to the side frames 3 of the base. The side supports for the table rest upon transverse pins 9 carried by the back section, the arrangement being such that the operation of elevating the back section will also elevate the table section and vice-versa. Table S is pivotally mounted upon pivots 10 to pieces 11 restingupon the table supports 7 and capable of adjustment along said supports as shown in Fig. 1. Table section 8 may be used for supporting food and dishes, or when used when reading or writing the same may be tilted upon its pivots at the proper angle and also moved along the supports 7 to the proper position. Rotatably mounted cross-wise of the back section is a right and left screw-threaded spindle 12 rotated at one end by a crank 13.
14 is a guide rod rigidly secured at its ends in plates 15 attached to the side frame of the base of the support.
16 and 17 are spaced parallel brace bars having their ends pivotally secured to blocks 1S and 19, the blocks 18 being provided with threaded perforations so as to move in op osite directions when the stem 12 is rotatedpto accomplished desired degrees of adjustment of the back section. The blocks 19 are er forated to freely slide along the guide ro 14, and they are slotted on one side as shown in dotted outline at 20, Figs. 1 and 2, to ermit the blocks to be detached from the gui e rod, the central portion of the latter being flattened an`d reduced at 21 to permit such detachment. When the blocks 19 are on either side of the reduced center portion of the guide rod they are incapable of detachment and may be slid along the same until they reach reduced portions 22, the shoulders 23 of which will engage the blocks 19 and hold them `firmly from sliding along the guide rod, so that when the back section is completely lowered the same may be instantly raised to a half elevated osition, as in Figs. 1 and 3, without manipu ating the spindle 12 the operation being accomplished by simply lifting the back section until the blocks 19 engage the shoulders Now if a greater degree of elevation of the back section is desired, the spindle 12 is rotated until the desired elevation is attained. To instantly drop the back section from the osition :in Figs. l and 3 to the lowered position in Fig. 2, the blocks 19 are slightly raised to disengage them from the shoulders 23 u on the guide rod, thus permitting the bloc s 19 to slide outwardly to the ends of the rod, the blocks 1S remaining in the same osition which they occupied previous to the owering of the back section. Although the drawings do not indicate a covering for the back section it is to be understood that the same is provided with a suitable covering of canvas or other material tacked or otherwise secured to the frame thereof.
Having described my invention what I having shouldered reduced portions adjacent to its ends, aback section pivotally connected with the base section7 a rotatable right and left screw-threaded' spindle mounted upon the back section, and two pairs of brace bars for the back section, said bars iyot'ally connected at their upper ends to blocks adapted to travel in o posite directions along the screw-threadec spindle, and
ivotally connected at their lower ends to lblocks adapted to slide along the guide rod 15 supportedby the base and engage the shoulders ofthe reduced portions upon said rod, substantially as described.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own I aEX my signature7 in presence of 20 two witnesses.
FRANKLIN D. SICKLES.
