Description
-Oooler and Washer;
RICHARD sAiJTE u, or' ol-NesNNATL -oHIoQAssIGNoR To HiMssLr AND JOSEPH B. DA VIS, OF SAME PLACE. NcsssgeuamLMq/thdisos- IMPROVED GAS-GOOLE IAND WASHER.
The Schedule referred to in To all .ilvhom Iit may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD SALTER, of Cincinnati, .in the -county of Hamilton, and State of ,Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Gasfollowing is a full, clear, and exact descriptionv of the construction and operation of the same, reference heilig had to the annexed drawing, making part of this speci'- cation, in which the figure is a vertical section of my improved gas-cooler and washer.
It is known that ordinary burning-gas, immediately after leaving the`retorts, contains impurities, from which it must be cleansed b efore it is fit for use.
The purification, or final cleansing of gasis usually done by passing it through dry lime; but, before that is done, theieare ce1- tai n yolatileimpuiitesirhichmust beseparated from it by condensing them.`
It is known that, in order toaccomplish the latter purpose, the gas' must be kept atja very low temperature, and, while-at such low temperature, must come in contact with a large area of surface, upon which the impuritiesmay deposit as they are condensed'.
The object of my invention more eifectively than it has heretofore been done, and, for this purpose, I force the gas through the Iboulders, which are kept constantly cooled with water.
To enable others to use my invention, I 'shall proceed to describe its construction and mode of open ation.
M is a rectangular box.
D is a partition, dividing the box M into two chambers, L and L', and extending from the top to the perforated bottom N. lts joints are all hermetical.
B and B'are pipes, for the admission of a small quantity of water, which strikes against the under Vsides of the plates C and G', respectively, and is there broken,
and falls as spray over the boulders H.
The result of their action is to keep the chambers above the boulders always full of spray and the boulders always wet, the water dripping from them, and thus carrying o the condensed impurities' deposited on their surfaces by the passing gas.
C O are circular reverberatory plates, made fast to A the .upper portion of the box M by the suspenders, c c, immediately underneath, and a short distance below, where the pipes A and A' empty into the-box.
I is a chamber in the bottom of the box M, into which the water drips from'the boulders, through the perforated bott-om N, carrying the impurities deposited by condensation on them.
and I do hereby declare that theis. to accomplish this these Letters Patent'and maling prt'of the wma.
E is a pipe or siphon, through which the water, after having been used, is taken oE from' the box.
The shape shown in the drawing is'not thebest, in my opinion, for the purpose. 1
I prefer a pipe having a regular curve, without any' sharp corners, such as are shown in the drawing` K is a man-hole tothe chamber I, through whichV the sediment deposited in it can be cleanedout.
rLhe operation is as follows: The gas enters the chamber L by the pipe A, from Vthe retorts, striking against the upper surface of the reverbeiatory plate G, and is partiallyr cooled by the action of the Water .on the under surface of said plate. There the resist-ance ofthe plate separates and spreads the gas through the chamber, and it descends down through. the. chamber, .impelled irward.. by themforeea of the volume of gas entering from the retorts, and
is in contact'.with the particles of spray descending from the plate O, and, by'itis considerably cooled by the time it reaches the boulders, through which it is forced down into the chamber l'.
In its progress through the boulders, seeking as it will the routel in which there is least resistance, the spaces between them being irregular, its course will be tortuous, and it will, in consequence, pass a large area of surface, kept constantly cool by the falling spray.
After the gas has passed through the chamber L into the chamber I, its ,only mode of exit will be into the. chamber L', where it will enter and pass up through the'boulders placed therein, and against the spray falling from the reverherator plate O, and pass out-of the pipe A. l
After the gas has passed through one. box, such asheie described, it may pass' through others of the same kind, until it is in a tit state to pass through the dry lime. l
Having thus described myinvention,
WhatI claim as new, and desired to secure by Le ters Patent, is-
1. The surfaces of boulders, kept constantly wet, in the manner desciihed, for the purpose described.
2. The pipe B, reverberating plate O, andthe wet boulders, for the purpose described. 'RICHARD SALTER. Witnesses:
M. B. ruim, J ossea B. Durs.
