It will be understood that the pumping part of the engine may be used `whenever necessary without breaking the seal formed by the cap t or without opening said cap, and it will also be understood that. by openbucket may be discharged through the opening a3 in the mannen above described, and the supplemental fire extinguishing devices placed in the bucket may b e removed at this time and separately used if desired, but it will be apparent that as far as the pumping part of my improved engine is concerned, the said engineer device! may be lused independently of the supplemental fire extinguishing devices which fare placed in the bucket, and my invention is not limited to the use of said devices.
ln Fi 7 I have shown a modification in which t ie bucket is provided with alpermanent cover having a central opening around which is a downwardly or inwardly directed annular flange or rim member p having a depending central tube member p2 with which the pump cylinder d is connected, and the opening in the cover of the bucket is closed by the cap c the same, or substantially the same, as shown in- Figs. l and4, and it will be understood that with thisconstruction all the parts of the pump device or apparatus shown in Figsl and 4 are employed, the /objectof Fig. 7 of the drawing being to show a modification of the bucket in which the supplemental Vfire extinguishing devices are not employed' and the cover of the bucket not provided with anv openinga's. The apparatus shown in Fig. 7 being intendedto` illustrate a device in .which only the pump is employed.'
By means of the method of constructing described, it will be apparent that the en.-
gine or apparatus, o r lthe pump i feature thereof, may be continuallyv operated and new materlal may be poured lnto the bucket lwithout stopping -the operation of the pump,
and after the composition used in the buckety or receiver is exhausted, if no Inore is con-' vement, water may be vpoured into the bucket or receiver and forced through the pipe le for the purpose of extinguishing the fire. lt will also be apparent that while the engine or apparatus herein shown and described is designed'to be operated by hand the same maybe made so that the pump mayl be operated by power if desired. .It Will also be observed that in Fig. 4 of the drawing the handle d by which the pump is operated is formed integrally with the piston rod d3, and the ca p f formed separately and secured to said rod, but in the construction shown in Fig. 7 the handle d is formed integrally with the cap f, and this construction is also shown ing said cap any part of the contents of the in Figs. .5 and 6, but it will be understood that either the construction shown in Fig 4 or that shown in Fig. 7, in this respect. may

1. 'In a fire extinguishing engine o t the class described, a receiver provided with a.
cover, said cover heilig provided with an o )ening closed by a cap beneath which is t 1e cylinder of the pump which passes downwardly into said receiver, said c vlinder being provided with a valved piston having a rodwhich passes outwardly through a stuiiing box connected with said cap and is provided at its end with a handle, said rod and said stuffing box being provided with means whereby the turning of said rod by means of the handle thereof will lock the piston in its innermost position and the rod to said cap, and said cap being provided with a valved coupling in connection with said cylinder, 'and means for connecting a flexible tube v therewith, and the ycover of the receiver being also provided at one side with an open- .ing and a sealing cap for said opening.

4. ln a tire extinguishing engine of the class described, a. bucket or receiver provided with a permanent cover having at one side edge an opening closed by a movable sealing cap, said cover being also provided with another opening closed by a detachable sealing cap beneath which is a pump cylinder which extends downwardly into said bucket or receiver, and a piston mounted in said cylinder and provided with a rod which passes out-- wardly through the detachable sealing cap, said detachable sealing cap being also pro-y vided with a. valved coupling in communication with' said cylinder, and means for connecting a flexible tube with said valved coupling.

In a tire extinguishing engine of the class described, a bucket or receiver pro-l vided with a permanent cover having at one side edge an opening closed by a movable scaling cap, said cover bein also'providcd with another o pening closed Iiy a detachable sealing cap beneath which is a pump Cylinderwhich extends downwardly into said bucket' or receiver, anda piston mounted in saidcylinder and provided with a rod which lpasses outwardly through the detachable sealing cap, said ydetachable sealing cap being alsovprovided with a valvedcoupling 'in coninunication with said cylinder, and means for connecting a iiexible tube with said vallved-` coupling, saidbucket or receiver being also' provided with supplemental iire extinguishing devices which are placed therein andreu moved therefrom through the first named opening ih the cover. l 6.
