Description

tiuitd 'tatee SAMUEL RDMAN MORGAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. VLette/rs Patent'lio. 88,061, dated March 23, 1865; antedated March 8, 1869.
MROVENIENT IN APRARAIII'Sv FOR -TRANSMITTING ROTARY MOTION.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To allv whom it may conccmf I Be it known that I, SAMUEL RODMAN MORGAN, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Method of 'Iransmitting Rotary Motion; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, iu which- Figure l is a front elevation of a machine embodying my improvement; and
Figure 2 is a similar view of the two rollers, shown in a different position from those in fig. 1.
The same letterindicates the same part in both figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the transmission of rotary motion, by the use of two corresponding spiral surfaces, working in contact with eachother, and so applied to the surfaces of a pair of parallel rollers, or other supporting axes, that when either spiral is rotated, rotary motion is communicated to its fellow, by reason of the action of the spiral surfaces on each other, the relative speed of the rollers being proportional to their diameters, all as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the drawinga, marks the base of the machine.
b b, two uprights, in which are hung two parallel rollers c d; the roller c being of twice the diameter of the roller d.
On the surface of roller d, is applied spirally afillet, e, which goes twice around the roller.
A similar fillet, f, is attached to the surface of the larger roller c, and having the same pitch as th fillet e, passes butonce around the roller c.
The two fillets correspond exactly with each other,
and the rollers are so arranged, that the edges of the fillets work in contact.
Power may be applied to either roller by any suitable motor, here represented by the winch g, when, by reason of the action of the edges of the fillets e f, against each other, the motion is communicated to the other roller, their speed being proportioned t0 their -relative diameters.
If, for example, roller c is rotated, it drives roller d at double its speed 5' and if, on the other hand, "roller d is rotated, it drives roller c at half its speed, and so of other proportions.
Motion may be given in either direction, and either of the. illets may be replaced, if preferred, by a spiral groove, in which the fillet of the opposite roller may be received, the rollers in this case working in Contact, or nearly so.
I do not limit myself to rollers of any specific proportions, or to spirals of any particular pitch, or to rollers as the mode of supporting the spiral surfaces, as these may be varied Without affecting the principle of my invention. p
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Oommunicatin g rotarymotion by means of spiral surfaces, arranged and operating together substantially in the manner set forth.
The above specification of my said invention, signed and witnessed at Boston, this 30th day of July, A..D. 1868.
S. RODMAN MORGAN.
