LOUIS HARTEL, OF CHERRYVALE, KANSAS.
POCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4:, 1908.
Application filed May 8.1907. Serial No. 372.519.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS HARTEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oherryvale, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Pocket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to pockets and it is particularly useful in connection with pockets adapted to be removably secured to articles of apparel.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and durable pocket adapted to contain money, papers, valuables and the like, and having means for securely locking the pocket to prevent the unauthorized removal of objects therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pocket having an opening provided with a hinged closing member and having a combination lock for securing the closing member in position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a pocket adapted to resist attack when an attempt is made to sever the material comprising the pocket, with a cutting implement.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention showing parts broken away g Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of a detail showing` parts in crosssection; Fig. 4 is a similar view of a det-ail; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged elevation of a further detail.
Before proceeding to a more detailed eX- planation of my invention, it should be understood that the pocket is adapted to be secured to articles of clothing of all kinds in any suitable manner by pinning, sewing or the like. The pocket may be fashioned of any suitable material such as cloth, leather or netting, and may be of different sizes suitable for various purposes. I provide a combination lock controlling the closing member of the pocket, the combination of which may be changed at will, and which can be operated simply and expeditiously when the combination is known but which presents great difficulty in the opening of the pocket by an unauthorized person or one ignorant of the combination. To prevent the contents of the pocket being wrongfully removed by cutting or tearing an opening in the body of the material l provide a reinforcing netting of chains, links, or wire netting adapted to resist an attack with a eutting implement, and thereby preserving the contents of the pocket.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the body of the pocket formed of cloth, leather or any other preferred or common material. The side 2 of the 'body adapted to be arranged outwardly on the person of the wearer comprises double walls 3 and 4 of the material of which the pocket is fashioned, with a reinforcing netting 5 of metal links or the like arranged between the walls 3 and 4. The opposite side 6 of the body which normally is arranged adjacent to the body of the wearer, comprises merely a single thickness of material. l provide a jaw 7 of metal or other suitable material and preferably semi-circular in form; the jaw 7 is arranged at the upper part of the body and is secured to the material by sewing, riveting or in any other suitable manner. I provide a second jaw 8 arranged within the first jaw and substantially similar in form thereto. At the extremities of the jaws 7 and S respectively, are formed sleeves 9 and 10 in which are located hinge pins 11 forming a hinge. connection between the jaws. Helical springs 12 are. mounted upon the hinge pins 11 and have the ends suitably secured to the adjacent jaws 7 and S respectively, the springs 12 normally forcing the jaws apart. The jaws present the pocket opening 13 therebetween. The jaw 7 has an integral lateral extension 14 on the side remote from the jaw 8 for a purpose which will appear hereinafter. At the inner edge opposite the extension 14 the jaw 7 has a slot 15 in which is slidably arranged a catch member 16. The catch member 16 has end extensions 17 and 1S arranged at opposite sides of the jaw 7 and adapted to engage opposite sides of the jaw 8 when the catch member is projected beyond the inner edge of the jaw 7 to secure the jaws one to the other, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 2. At the opposite end, the catch member 16 has end projections 19 and 20 constituting guides to permit the catch to slide smoothly upon the jaw the catch member beyond the edge of the,
jaw 7 into engagement with the jaw 8.y The end extension 17 has the outer edge beveled so that when the jaw 8 is forced into position within the jaw 7 the catch member is moved slidably upon the jaw 7 to permit the jaw 8 j to assume its proper position.
A dial 29 is arranged upon the extension 14 of the jaw 7 and has a dial-pin located in suitable openings in the extension and in the bracket 26. The dial-pin has a part 30 adjacent to the dial, of angular cross-section, and a part 31 remotefrom the dial, round in cross-section. The dial has indicating marks and figures 32 and 33. A disk 34 having a recess 35 at the edge is rigidly mounted upon the dial-pin, having a rectangular opening arranged upon the dial-pin section 30. A second disk 36 having a circular slot 37 and a recess 38 at the edge is mounted loosely upon the dial-pin part 31 and is free to move thereupon. The disk 34 has an integral eX- tension 39 projecting into the slot 37 of the disk 36. It will be understood that within certain limits, the disk 34 is independent of the disk 36 but if the extension 39 engages an end of the slot 37 the disk 36 will rotate with the disk 34 when the latter is operated, by means of the dial 29, which is adapted to be manually rotated. The dial-pin is secured from accidental displacement Vby means of a transverse pin 40 located in a suitable opening of the dial-pin beyond the bracket 26. A member 41 having spring arms 42 is pivotally mounted upon the bracket 26 by means of screw-pin 43, the arms 42 of the member 41 normally engaging the disks to prevent too free a movement of the same. An indicating mark 44 is presented by the extension 14 adjacent to the dial and serves as a marking point in the operation of the combination lock.
The operation of the lock is as follows: The dial is rotated in one direction or the other until the extension `39 engages with an end of the slot 37, whereupon the disk 36 l will rotate with the disk 34.
set that when the indicating mark of the eX- tension 14 registers with a predetermined indicating mark of the dial the recess 38 of the disk 36 will be in alinement with the slidable catch member 15. When this point is reached the dial is turned in the opposite direction until the indicating mark of the eX- tension registers kwith another predeter- The lock is somined mark of the dial. When this point is reached the recess 35 of the disk 34 will be in alinement with the catch member 16. lt will be noted that when the disk 34 is turned in the opposite direction the extension 39 can move freely within the slot 37 permitting the disk 36 to remain in the position into which it was turned by the first movement of the dial. When this position of the disk is attained the catch member may be moved into the recesses 35 and 38 to permit the jaw 8 to open. The arrangement is such that normally the catch member cannot be moved from engagement with the aw 8 because of the disks, the peripheries of the latter preventing the movement of the catch member.
sition upon the part 31 of the dial-pin, by removing it therefrom, turning it in one direction or the other, and replacing it upon the rectangular section.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent z- 1.
