Be it known that I, Anson E. SHUSTER, a

I citizen of the United States, and a resident of North Bend, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented a new an Improved Device for Supporting Umbrellas and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention is directed to im rovements in devices for supporting umbrel as and like articles from the body, and is constructed to enable the same to be carried in any desired osition, as overhead, without the use of the liands or arms of the wearer.

The object of the invention, primarily, is to provide a device of this character, which when in use will be comfortable to the wearer, 'and to permit the umbrella or like article to be thrown in various angular positions and positively retained or displaced with ease and facility.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

The preferred form of construction comprises a yoke 1, which is preferably made of very thin sheet metal shaped to exactly conform to the shoulders of the wearer when in operative position. The yoke is provided with a downwardly-extending tongue 2, to which is secured in any suitable manner, preferably at the rear face thereof, a belt 3 designed to pass about the waist of the wearer. Secured by screws 4" or otherwise affixed to the front face of the tongue 2 on the longitudinal center thereof, is a T-shaped member comprising a ribbed stem 4 and a head 5, the latter being provided with an areshaped slot 6 arranged concentrically to a pivot pin 7, projecting from the lower end of the member 4.

said plates being held slightly separated from each other by collars or bosses 9 inter posed therebetween. This separation of the plates formin the head 5 provides for the rece tion of t e headof a screw 1O, the body of w ich passes outwardly through the slot 6, and has threaded thereon a conical faced thumb-nut 11. As best shown in Fig. 6, the in 7 is slightly reduced in "diameter near its outer end for receiving and retaining the forked end of an arm 12, said arm being also preferably constructed with a strengthening rib and provided with countersunk notches 13 entering the opposite sides thereof near its upper end, these notches registering with the slot 6 formed in the head 5. By this construction it is obvious that on passing the body of the. screw 10 in either of the notches 13 and tightening the thumb "nut 11, the arm 12 may be secured at any desired angle at the front of the yoke.

To the upper end of the arm 12 is rigidly fixed as by rivetingas shown in Fig. 4, to project outwardly at the front face thereof, a portion 14 of the stem carrying at its outer end one-half 15 of a ball socket. The opposite half 15 of said socket is carried by the other portion 14 secured thereto by a transverse screw 16, a toe 17 being provided at the inner end of the portion 14 of the stem in order that the diameter of the socket maybe readily varied by the adjustment of said screw 16. 15 and 15 and forming in connection therewith a ball and socket or universal joint, is a ball 18, said ball having an opening 19 passing centrally therethrough and flared at both ends, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. This opening 19 receives a bolt 20 passing through elongated openings in the sides of the socket, and is provided with a thumbnut 21 screwed on its threaded end, the

latter operating to contract the diameter of the socket and bind the ball therein when tightened.

On the outerend-of the ball 18 is carried to extend in a direction at right angles to the opening 19, a clamp, comprising a fixed jaw 22 and a movable jaw 23 hinged thereto on a pin at 24. In the use of t e invention, the oke 1 is passed over the head and seate on the shoulders, with the tongue 2 extending downwa'rdly in front of the body. The belt 3 is then adjusted about the' waist, actin to securely hold this end of the yoke in p ace. With the yoke-in this position, the stafl of'an umbrella or other like device may be readily inserted between the clamping jaws, and theumbrella adjusted by means of the ball and socket joint, together with the angular adjustment of the arm 12 to any desired osition overhead, thus giving free use 0 the hands and farms While the umbrella is carried.

To remove the umbrella it is not necessary that the staff thereof be removed from the clamping jaws; but the same in connection with the balland socket joint and the arm 12, may be bodily lifted from the pin 7 by loosening the thumb-nut 11, leaving only the yoke and attached T-sha ed member and the belt on the body. en again using the umbrella, it is only necessary to seat the arm 12 upon the pin' 7 and re-secure it in adjusted position by the thumb-nut 11.

Although I have'described the preferred construction of my invention, I nevertheless regard the recise embodiment as not material provi ed the essential characteristics are employed as pointed out in the annexed claims. r

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a yoke, an arm pivotally connected to the yoke, means for securin said arm in adjusted position, a universa joint fixed to said arm, and a clamp fixed to one member of said joint.

2. In a device of the character described, in combination, a yoke having a downwardly-extending tongue, a belt secured to said tongue, an arm pivoted to said tongue, means for holding said arm in varying angular positions, a universal joint fixed to said arm, and .a clamp carried by one member of said joint.

3. In a device of the character described, in combination, a universal joint, a clamp fixed to one member of said joint, an arm by which said clamp is carried, and means for supporting said arm from the body.

4. In a device of the character described,

in combination, a support adapted to be 6 5 fixed to the body of aman, an arm pivoted to said support, means for holding said arm ,in varying angular positions, a universal member secured to said tongue having a slot in the head thereof, an arm pivoted to said member, a screw working in said slot adapted to secure said arm in varying angular positions, a universal joint carried by the arm, and a clamp carried by one member of said joint.

6. In a device of the character described, in combination, a yoke having a tongue, a slotted member secured to said tongue, an arm pivotally supported on said tongue, a device operating in the slot of said member adapted to secure said arm in varying angular positions, a universal joint carried by the arm, anda clamp carried by one member of said joint.

7. In a device of the character described,

in combination, a support adapted to be fixed to the body of a man, a universal joint supported from said support, a clamp carried by one member of said joint, and means passing through said joint adapted to contract the socket thereof and hold said clamp in varying angular positions.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a yoke, a ball and socket joint supported from said yoke, a clamp carried by one member of said joint, and a 'bolt centrally passing through said joint having a nut ada ted to contract the socket of the joint and old said clamp in varying angular positions.

9. In a device of the character described, in combination, a yoke having a projecting pin, an arm having a forked end pivotally engaging the pin, means for holding said arm in varying angular positions, and a clamp supported from said arm for the purpose described.

10. In a device of the character described, in combination, a yoke, an arm pivotally supported from the yoke having countersunk notches at opposite sides thereof, a screw operating in a slot and having a conical thumb-nut adapted to engage with said notches, and a clamp carried by said arm, for the purpose described.
