To all whom 'it may concern.' Be it known that I, JEROME JOSEPH Sonor- TEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a cer- .tain new and useful Im rovement in Machines for Pasting and olding Cartons, of which the following is a full,'clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac-.

A third pair of folding plates 14 which also form parts of the sides of the box, is secured to the upper member at the rear of the folding'plates 13. On the lower edge portions of the side faces of the bottom member of the box adjacent the front end thereof are laterally projectin lugs 15 and on the upper edge portions of t le sides of the top member are laterally projecting luvs 16 which extend from the front end of said top member to a point adjacent the folding plates 14. These lugs 15 and 16 act as spacers for guide plates 17, the lower edges of which are inclined and are spaced away 'from the folding plates 13 so as to roduce lon itudinall extending inclined sots 18, sai guide plhtes also forming parts of the sides of the box A.
The guide plates are provided at their front ends with depending portions 17?- which are secured to the lugs 15 on the bottom member but this is the only point at which the guide plates are secured to the bottom member. The front ends 13 and 14a of the pairs of folding plates 13 and 14 are mortised lnto the side faces ofthe bottom and to member of the box so that no abru t shou ders will be formed at the points w ere the front ends of said folding plates terminate.
The carton is adapted to forma wrapper for a bag or sack containing spices or any other substance and after the bag has been slipped into the carton the .flaps 5 `at each end of the carton are folded inwardly b v the fingers of the operator, as shown in Fig. 6. The 'carton is then inserted between the wedge-shaped folding plates 12 and this o eration of inserting the carton causes said p ates to bend the flaps 6 at each end of the carton inwardly so that they will overlap the flaps 5 that were bent inwardly by the fingers of the operator, see Fig. 5. Only one of the folding plates 12 is-shown in Fig. 5 but it will, of course, be understood that a pair of such plates is provided as shown in 111g. 1, one of the plates 12 having been omitted from Fig. 5 so as to more clearly illustrate the construction of the folding box.
As previously stated, the carton is fed 5 through the folding box by the conveyer 1 and to this end said conveyer is provided with lugs or blocks larwhich engage the 'carton and cause it to move with the conveyer.
As the carton travels between the foldin plates 1.2 said plates will bend the flaps 7 an b at each end of the carton into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. 5, said flaps there` after passing into the guideways or channels forined by spacing the guide plates 17 away from the top and bottoni member of the box. After the carton has reached the position indicated by the carton in Fig. 5-so that the flaps 7 have passed from under the depending portions 17a of the guide plates, paste or some other suitable adhesive substance is applied to the inside faces of the flaps 7.
'l`lie means herein shown for applying paste to the flaps 7 consists of horizontally disposed disks 19 arran ed adjacent the side faces of the low er niein er of the box A, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the flaps 7 will come iiito contact with said disks during the forward movement of the carton and thus reccive a coating of paste. The paste is supplied to the vdisks 19 by vertically disposed disks 2() which contact. with the peripheral edges of the disks l19 and also extend into hoppers or tanks 21 that contain a supply of paste. The shafts 22 to which the horizontal disks are secured are mounted in stationary bearings 23 and are provided at their upper ends n ith beveled gears 24 that meshwith beveled gears 25 on a horizontal cross shaft 26 mounted in a bearing 27,y the bearings 23 and 27 being secured to the top member of the folding box A. Continuous rotary movement is imparted to the cross shaft 26 by .means of a belt 28 passing over a pulley 29 on said cross shaft and over a pulley 30 on the main drive shaft 4. The vertical disks 2() which convey the paste from the supply tank to the applying disks 19 are secured to a horizontal shaft 31 mounted in a bearing 32 on the underneath side of the bottom member of the folding box, and at one end of said shaft is a sprocket wheel 33 which receives a chain 34 that travels-over a cog wheel 35 on the cross shaft 26 whereby continuous rotary niovcinentyill be imparted to the vertical 5,-, disks 20.
After paste has been applied to the inside faces of the flaps 7, as Just described, said flaps are bent upwardly over the ends of the folded lla s 5 and 6. This is effected by the folding p ates 13 whose upper edges are inclined upwardly, said plates also being provided with outwardly fiared portions 13b, as shown in Fig. 5. As the flaps 7 come into contact with the inclined edges of the flared 65, portions '13b the flaps will first be bent into a horizontal position and then aduall bent upwardly as the carton is fe along y the conve er as indicated by the carton 'y in F1g. 5. Prior to vbending down the flaps 8 the inner faces of said flaps were coated with paste by a paste-applying apparatus of the saineconstruction as that previously described and consisting of horizontally disposed applying disks 36, vertical conveying disks 37, and
cross shaft 39 rwhich'imparts movement to the disks being driven by means of a chain 40 passing around sprocket wheels 26 and 39a on the ends of the cross shafts 26 and 39.
The flaps 8 are subjected to pressure after they have been folded inwardly so as to cause the paste tofset and thus retain them in position by means-of `two endlessbelts 41 which form a guideway for the carton, as shown in Fig. 1, and spring-pressed plates 42 that' bear upon said belts and force` them inwardly against the ends of the carton.

From the foregoing it will e seen that the operationof pasting and folding the flaps of t e carton. is entirely automatic, the cartons with their flaps open, as shown in Fig. 6, being fedinto the machine by an operator who stands adjacent the wedge-shaped plates 12 and being automatically ejected from the machine by the conveyer `1 after the flapsv have been pasted and folded.- rIhe machine is of such simple construction that it can be manufactured at a small cost and is not liable to get out of order and does not require any skill on the art' of the operator who runs it.
Another d)esirable feature of the machine is that it can be used for pasting and folding the flaps of cartons of various sizes and it is for this purpose that I form vthe upper and lower members of the folding box in sections.
As shown in Fig. 5, the strips or bars 49a which connect the two sections of the top member together are provided Vwith elongated slots through which screws I50 extend so that by loosening'said screws the sections can be moved toward or away from each other and then again clamped by tightening the screws, thereby permitting the width of the folding box to'be varied. The bars 11 and 11a which secure the top and bottom members of the box to ether are also provided with elongated s ots through which screws extend so that the height of said box can also be varied, and the folding plates 12, 13 and 14 are provided with elongated slots through which the screws extend to lsecure them in y position, thereby enabling said plates to be adjusted. The .adjustment of the folding box will necessarily necessitate an adjustment of the paste-applying a paratus and to this end I have formed tllfe conveying and applying disks and also the driving gears so that they can be adjusted on the shafts on which they are mounted, the hubs of said disks and gears being provided with set screws for this purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In almachine for pasting and folding the end flaps of a cart-on, a conveyer for hold ing the carton, a stationary member for folding in some of the flaps of the carton as it is introduced into the `machine, means for applying .an adhesive substance to other flaps of the carton, and means for folding said flaps 'over the flaps which were folded inwardly when the carton was introduced into the machine; substantially as described.
2. In a machine for pasting and folding the 'endl aps of acarton, a conveyer for holding the carton, means for bending some of the flaps of the carton'into an approximately vertical position so that they extend at right angles to the body of the carton, means for applying an adhesive to the inside faces of said flaps, and .means for thereafter bending said flaps into their final position 3 substantially as described.
3. In a machine for pasting and folding the end flaps of a carton, a movable conveyer on which the carton is placed, a folding apparatus comprising stationary plates for 'folding inwardly some of the side flaps of the carton, said plates also bending thetop and bottom flaps into an approximately'vertical position, means for applying an adhesive to the bottom fiaps, stationary means for thereafter folding said bottom flapsinwardly and pressing them upon the side flaps, means for applying an adhesive to the top flaps, and means for thereafter bending said top flaps into final position; substantially as described.
4.\ In a machine for-pasting and folding the end flapsY of'a carton, a conveyer on which the carton is placed, and a folding box through which said conveyer travels, said folding box being provided with stationary plates which bend some of the side flaps inwardly and the top and bottom flaps into an approximately vertical position to receive an adhesive as the carton is inserted in the machine, plates which bend the bottom flaps upthe end flaps of a carton, a conveyer for folding the carton, a folding box throu h which said conveyer travels, wedge-shape folding plates at'the front end of said box for folding inwardly some of the side flaps of the carton and also bending the top and bottom fia s into approximately vertical position, a gui e plate for retaining said fla s in a vertical position, and plates provide with outwardly fiared portions -having inclined edges for rogressively bending the top and bottom aps of the carton into final position as the conveyer moves it through the box substantially as described.
6. In a machine for pasting and folding the end flaps of a carton, a conveyer for Y carrying the carton, and a folding box through which said conveyer travels, said folding box comprising to and bottom members formed in sections t at are adjustably connected together, and adjustable' side plates which are so constructed that-theywill progressively fold in the flaps of the carton as it travels through the box substantially as described.
7. In a machine for pasting and folding the ,and flaps of a carton, a conveyer on which the carton is placed, means for bending some of the :deps of the carton into position toreceive en adhesive, horizontally disposed disks for nl' plying en adhesive to seid ile s, vertically isposed vdisks for conveying t ve adhesive to seid a plyingdisks, and means for rotating said disks; substantially as described.
