tation-destroyer in Which an arrangement of gasolene tanks and burners combined with a suitable motor and other appurtenances are carried by a frame or vehicle mounted on AWheels and propelled along a railroad track for burning the Weeds along and on each side of the saine, and is in the nature of an iniprovement on the ,United States Letters atent ranted to lVilliam R. McKeen, Jr., and Art ur H. Fetters, January 23, 1906, Number 810,793, for improvement in vegetau tion-destroyers.
Our invention has for its object to increase the intensity and efliciency of the burner flame and utilize the heat therefrom for vaporizing t e gasolene in its passage to the burners.
The invention consists in features of, novelty as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, whereon,
Figure l, is a top lan View` of a series of gasolene burners with) or deiiector and vaporizing pipes (indicated by dotted lines) 'constructed and arranged according to our invention, Fig. 2, a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3, a vertical cross section to' enlarged scale through 'one of the v burners and combined parts, on line 3, 3, in
Fig. l and Fig. 4, a top plan view thereof, broken away.
Like letters an'd numerals of reference denote like parts in all the figures. n
a represents an end portion of the frame or vehicle, and b the corresponding wheels of a vegetation-destroyer o the character described,in which the gasolene tank or reservoir, motor, and other necessary equipment (not shown), being of the usual construction and constituting no art of our present invention needs no furt er description.
Extending horizontally beyond the end portion a of the frame or vehicle (hereinafter referred to as the frame), over and between their combined casing the rails of the track c at a suitable'distance therefrom, is a preferably, shallow rectang lar casing or deiiector d Which is ad'usta ly secured` to the end of the frame c by rackets or hangers c fixed at their loWer ends to the top of the casing d, preferabl by rivetsl,
ieo
and at their u per ends to t e end of the frame a by bo ts 2*, vthe holes for the latter through the end member of the frame a and the brackets e respectively, being at equal distances apart so that on removing the bolts 2, the casin d can be raised or lowered,
and refixed by t e bolts 2, at varying dis# tances fromthe track c as desired.
To eachA side of the casing d is hin ed a similar casing or deector d which is a justable to a suitable distance from the surface of the ground adjacent to the corresponding side of the track c, the casings d and d being preferably open at the bottom, but otherwise closed on all sides, except at the top, through which are'formed preferably, circular open 1 ings3 at a suitable distance aparts Through each o ening-S 1s removably 1nserted a correspon ingly shaped burner tube l (see Figs. 8 and 4) Whichdepends for aI suitable distance Within the casing d (d) and is preferablyformed at its upper end with an outer surrounding flange or 11p 4 which bears'.
on the top of the casin d (ol and makes an air-tightl joint therewit v Within Leach casing d, d', is arranged, a pipe 5 (or series thereof communicating with each otherl'which ispreferably, bent or otherwise directed to and fro, around and adjacent to, but clear of, the
burner tubes 4 as shown, and held and tightened against the inside of the top of the casing d (d) by clamps or staples 6, the
prongs of Which pass through, and are' clenched against the outside of the top of, the casing d (d) by nuts 6. Or the pipe 5 'may be otherwise arrangediand secured at a suitable level V'Within vthe casing d (df) -in any other desired manner. Or in lieu of a pipe 5, any other form of receptacle or cham er se-- cured to, or integral with the walls of thel .casings (1,11 maybe used as the equivalent thereof.
The pipe'5 of each casing d, d', communie cates at one end With a gasolene tank or res- ;ervoir (not shown) carried on the frame a as before mentioned, by a pipe 5', between which' andthe pipe 5 is 'an universal 'oint 7 allow for the said adjustments of t e cas ings d, d', while the other end of each pipe 5 r communicates by ine'ans'of a suitable elbow 3 l "with a series of pipes 9 fuel means for the said fuel from a suitable which are arranged over and adjacent to the top of each casing d,d,asshown.l
Projecting. from and communicating With the pipes 9 on their undersidel immediately over each burner tube 4, is a nipple l() (see Figs. 3 and 4) the 'passageeway Ythrough which from the. interiorof the pipes 9 to its outlet into the upper is packed' with fine wire netting". or other suitable permeable material ll adapted to filter the gasolene vapor in passing therethrough as lhereinafter referred to.
nY the operation of our paratus as above described, other liquid fuel) being admit Y tank` or. reservoir on-the frame a through the 'pipes v5 into the pipes 5 i ings d, d', heat from anyI available source is initially applied to the pipes 5V and thereby vaporin'es orconverts the .gasolene therein into gas whichpasses from the pipesthrough the gas pipes9, and thence gas'olene (or ples 10 (wherein it is straine il) into the burner tubes, 4, and in so', loing air is 'drawn by the induced current from' the spacesbetweeii the tubes ALan'd' nipples 10, and. mixing with the gas passes therewith through the burner tubes 4, at the lower ends of which, or thereaboutfwithin the casings d,
d, the resulting mixture is ignited .and 'an intense heat-thereby generated, 'which' being deflected' downward bythe top of the cas'- ings d, d', is concentrated upon and destroys the'vegetatxion beneath as the track, and. at the same time maintains the constant vaporization of the .gasolcne within the pipes-5 durnig the' operation.
y By this invention` the flame from the.
burners is intensified and bclngconfined vwithin the casings or dciiectors d, d', and utilized for vaporizing-the gasolene instead of being dispersed or dissipated into the surrounding atmosphere, its elliciencv is greatly increased; moreover, the vegetation is destroyed. more] thoroughly and uniformly, with less risk apparatus on thefraine orvchicle.
