Be it known that I, PHILLIP W. CoRNwELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Heat Regulating and Controlling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a heat-regulating and controlling apparatus which can be applied to the flues of steam-heaters, steamboilers, furnaces, and other heating contrivances, the principal or general object bein to acquire perfect regulation of and contro over the combustion of fuel.
M'ore specifically, the principal objects of the improved structure below described are, to produce accuracy in adjustment, convenience in the removal for cleaning purposes, to reduce the care of a fire to the mere replenishment of coal at regular intervals and the raking of ashes, to produce a perfectly even heat, to prevent the melting of fuel and the formation of-clinkers, to prevent gas explosions, to render the combustion as nearly complete as possible, and to economize fuel, time and labor.
The nature of the invention is fully described in detail below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a heater with my device applied thereto, the parts being in normal position for automatic operation. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation showing my device in its normal position in a flue. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 3, Fig. 2, with the parts in an open position. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4, Fig. 2, with the parts in a closed position. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken through the regulator and flue, with the parts in a closed position. Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken through the regulator and flue at right angles to the view in Fig. 5, and with the parts in an open position.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
1 represents that portion of the flue 2 which contains the valve portion of my invention, and supports the same together with the rest of the contrivance. This portion 1 is preferably larger in diameter than the rest of the flue 2, although I may make such portion of the same diameter as the flue, if desired.
5 represents a curved plate which is on an arc which makes a part of the circle described by the portion 1, said portion being cut away at 6 to receive said curved plate, the object being to enable the contrivance, which is supported by the said plate, to be easily and quickly applied to the portion 1 of the flue. This plate is provided at its opposite ends with radial pins 7 which extend into suitable slots 8 in latches 9 which are pivotally secured at 10 to a suitable frame 11 which is secured to the portion 1 around its opening and next the edge thereof.
The valve or damper comprises two principal parts, namely, a main ring-shaped portion which is pivotally hung in the flue and is adapted to be rotated therein, and a concavoconvex portion which is centrally located within the ring-shaped main portion, and is adapted to slide or move at right angles with the plane of the main portion, and longitudinally within the flue.
12 represents a flat ring which makes the principal part of the main portion of the damper or valve, said ring being provided at its opposite edges with outwardly extending trunnions 13 and 14, the trunnion 13 being supported in the pipe 1, and the trunnion 14 being rigid or integral with a circular box or thimble 15 (Figs. 2 and 6) which is supported in a plate 16 secured to the outer surface of the plate 5, the said box 15 and portion 14 operating as a trunnion, which may, under circumstances below described, be rotated in the flue to the extent of a quarter turn, thus rotating the damper or valve to the same extent. Rigid or integral with said main portion 12 are parallel guides 17, said guides extending from the inner annular edge of the ring-shaped portion 12. See Fig. 6. 18 represents the concavo-convex portion or dome, and 19 the flange portion, of that part of the valve or damper which moves with relation to the main portion, being provided with ways 20 and holes 21 whereby it slides on the said guides 17. Links 22 (Figs. 3, 4, 5 and 6) engage by means of their lower ends 23, the flange 19 on opposite sides of the dome, and directly support the domed portion of the valve or damper, the upper ends of said links extending inward, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and being pivotally connected with and supported by the central portions 24 of the curved levers 25 (Figs. 3, 4 and 6) said levers being preferably made of strong -wire, and each of said levers being pivotally supported at one end by an ear 26 rigid on the upper surface of the ring-shaped portion 12, while the other ends of the levers are bent into a horizontal position at 27 (Fig. 3) and extend through the trunnion 14 which constitutes a portion of the inner wall of the box Rigid upon the portions 27 of the said levers within the box are intermeshing gears 28, 29, and the horizontal or pivotal portion 27 of one of the levers extends through the gear 28 and the front wall of the box 15, and has rigidly secured to its outer end the inner end of the slotted bar 30, which with the bar 31 constitutes an extensible lever which is connected by a suitable chain 32 and pulleys 33 with a suitable automatically regulating mechanism 34 (not new in this invention), said mechanism being connected by a chain 35 with the lower door 36 which opens into the heater below the grate.
In order to prevent the annular box or gear-case 15 from rotating in the plate 16, a bolt 37 is supported vertically in a bracket 38 which is secured to the plate 5, said bracket being provided with the horizontally projecting portions 39 through which said bolt extends. A suitable case 40 constituting the head of the .bolt and containing an ordinary spring, rests upon the upper projection 39, and said bolt is held normally thereby with its lower end extending through the upper wall of the gear-case 15. Thus the gear-case is held normally stationary and prevented from rotation in the plate 5, and hence the trunnion 14, which is rigid with said gear-case, is prevented from rotation, and the main portion 12 of the valve or damper held stationary inthe flue. The upper end of the bolt 37 is secured to a chain 46 which extends around suitable pulleys 47 and is provided with an ordinary handle 41.
My improved apparatus is shown in the drawings as capable of being operated either by hand or automatically, it being understood that the parts 32 to 47 inclusive make no part of the invention, but simply constitute means for operating the same. In Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5, the parts are in their normal position, that is, with the two portions of the valve or damper closed together and horizontal in the flue. When the device is to be operated by hand, the chain 32 is pulled by means of a chain 42 and the handle 43. A downward pull on this chain raises the outer end of the adjustable lever 30, 31 (which is weighted at 44) thus imparting rotation to the horizontal portion 27 of one of the curved levers 25, and by means of the intermeshing gears 28, 29 to the corresponding portion of the other curved lever 25, thus swinging said levers outward and apart and swin ing down the links 22, thereby lowering t e domeshaped portion 18, 19 of the valve or damper into the'position indicated in Figs. 3 and 6,

When the device is operated automatically, the same chain 32 is operated through the medium of the regulating apparatus 34, the chain 35 and the door 36, in the well known manner, opening and closing wholly or partially the valve or damper, by separating wholly or partially its parts, such operation being accomplished with the greatest exactness by the mechanism above described. It will be noticed that in this operation the main portion of the valve or damer does not move, it being held locked by the bolt 37. When it is desired to drive the fire to its fullest extent, as in starting it, for example, the chain 46 is pulled by means of the handle 41, thus withdrawing the bolt 37 and allowing the weight 44 to swing the lever 30, 31 down into a vertical position, thus turning the entire valve or damper from a horizontal into a vertical position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5.
The entire device being supported by the curved late 5, it is readily applied and removed y means of the latches 9 and pins 7, a corres onding opening being cut in the flue. Prefera ly I provide a short flue 1 of larger diameter, formed with said opening, and apply the whole to the main flue.
A guard 45 is secured to the lever 31 in order to fend off the chain 32 when the weight has swung to its lowest point, such construction being advantageous in swinging up'the weighted lever from said point.
The ease with which the device can be applied and removed enables the apparatus to e readily cleaned, while its sensitiveness and accuracy of adjustment result in an unusually perfect control over the combustion of the fuel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus of the character de scribed, a flue; a valve or damper consisting of a main portion comprising the ring-shaped portion 12 and guides extending therefrom, said main portion being pivotally supported in the flue and adapted to be rotated into an open or closed position therein, and the domeshaped portion 18 provided with the flange 19 and ways adapted to slide on said guides; the levers 25, the opposite ends of which are pivotally supported by said main portion; links connecting said levers with the flange of the dome-shaped portion on opposite sides of the dome; and mechanism for swinging said levers simultaneously outward or apart and thereby moving the dome-shaped portion away from the main portion of the valve or damper, substantially as described.
