Letters Patent No. 87,644, dated Ma/rch 9, 1869: antedated November 20, 1868.
`ZIMIIIF'R-.O'V'IElD ELASTIC' SEAT AND BACK FOR CHAIRS AND BOTTOM FOR BEDS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it mel/y concern Be it known that I, LEO DAFT, (British subject,) of' New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elastic Seats, Backs, and BedBottOms; and I do hereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, wh ich will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This drawing represents aperspective view of a chair provided with my improved elastic seat and back.
This invention relates to a new manner of forming or constructing the backs and seats of chairs, or other surfaces, where springs or cushions are usually employed, and consists in forming such sea-ts, backs, or surfaces of cords, bands, tubes, or narrow strips, of India rubber, such tubes, bands, cords, or strips, being either interwoven, in imitation of cane chair-seats, or'ot' wire netting, or in any other suitable 1nanner,or they are arranged parallel to each other, or in any suitable fanciful design.
A very convenient seat, back, or couch will, by this arrangement, be produced, in a simple and inexpensive manner.

The seat, as well as the back of the same, is represented as being formed of narrow strips, a a, of India rubber, either'interwoven in suitable manner, as on the seat, or arranged parallel to each other, as ou the back, or otherwise arranged, so as to form an elastic surface.
The India rubber' used may be prepared in the ordinary or in any suitable manner.
I claim as new, and desire to secure vby Letters Patent- Y Elastic seats, backs, and bed-bottoms, made of Indiarubber strips, interwoven and arranged substantially as herein shown and described.
