Description

N.FEYER8. Pimm-LITHOMAPNER, WASHINGTON D (L UNITED STATES PATENT OE-EroE.

AARON HARVEY CLAY, OF POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA.

APPARATUS FORPASTING AND HANGING WALL-PAPER.

Specification forming part of Letters vPatent No. 87,545, dated March 9, 1869.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AARON HARVEY CLAY, of Pottsgrove township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machinev for Applying Wall- Paper to Walls; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, showing various perspective views,

the saine being made a part of this specification.V t

I construct my machine of tin, though any other suitable material will do.

Drawing No. 1 represents a perspective of the upper part, the side, the ends, and general elevation of the paper-hangin g machine. Its details are as follows: A shows the iron axlerod upon which the roll of wall-paper is placed. Bl B2 show the two tighteners 0r guide-rollers for the transit of wall-paper through the machine; C, semi-cylindrical paste-reservoir; D, the end frame-pieces of paste-reservoir; E, the end frame-pieces through which the ends ot' wooden tie-rod F pass, for binding the said end framepieces E together; G, the brass stop to prevent the iron axlerod A from slipping out when the roll oi' wall-paper is placed upon it; H, brass hook and eye for retaining the frames D and E Vtogether when the wally paper has been adjusted on axle-rod A and on the guide-rollers B1 and B2. Y

Drawing No. 2 represents a perspective view ofthe paper-han gin g machine when opened for the purpose of iilling the reservoir C with luid paste, thereby exposing to view the pasting-roller J within thev semi-cylindrical pastereservoir C. It is also opened for adjusting the rollof wall-paper on the iron axle-rod A, as well as on the ixtures, or tighteners, or guide-rollers B1 andBz. Description of other details of this diagram is precisely the same as Drawing No. 1.

Drawing No. 3, Figure l represents a peri spective view ot' the paper-hanging machine,

with the roll of wall-paper K K adjusted on the iron axle-rod A A, and under the simultaneous operation of the paper, a a a, being pasted and hung on the wall L L. .The re maining description of details is precisely the same as in Drawing N o. 1.

The pasting process and direction taken by thevwallpaper will be found more explanatory in the description and diagram, crosssection, Drawing No. 3, Fig. No. 2.

DrawingNo. 3, Fig. 2, represents a crosssection ofthe paper-hanging machine; and it will be observed in this diagram that a clear and comprehensive view is at once conveyed, not only as to its simple mechanism, but as to the method of .conveying the paper a a a olf the roll K to its final application on the wall L.

The details are as follows: When the roll of paper K has been adjusted on the axle-rod A, and the paper a a a has commenced its adhesion to the wall L, it will be observed that by the simple pressure downward of the handmachine generally, all the rollers will be set in motion, the paper a a, a starting fromA the roll of wall-paper, K, and descending to the lirst tightener or guide-roller, B, and passing underneath it on the surface ot' the paste-roller J, from which the paper a a a receives a uniform covering of paste, and in that condition progresses toward the second tightener or guideroller, B2, and, slightly descending, passes underneath said roller to its iinal exit from the hand pasting and paper-hanging machine, at point t, to its gradual and regular adhesion to the wall L, as Fig. No. l fully illustrates. The small paste-roller M (when the 'fluid paste N gets too low in the paste-reservoir C C C) supplies all the residue paste to the large ,pasteroller J, to its entire and inal absorption.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A peculiar combination of rollers, revolving in a reservoir, whereby paste is uniformly applied to wall-paper while being hung upon the wall, as shown in the accompanying drawings and specification.

AARON HARVEY CLAY.
