-. t all whom it mag/ concern! I Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. hIANS- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county. of Essex and State of $Massachusetts,'have invented new and use 1 ful Improvements in Combination-Tools, of
\ which the following is a specification.
.toolproviding an efficient cork screw, can.
' .My inventionis an improved combination opener and bottle opener combined in a single implement which may be compactly folded so as to occupy but little space and enable it to be readily carried in the pocket and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
a side elevation of a combination-tool constructed in accordance with my invention,
showing the samefolded. Fig. 2 isa similar view, showing the cork screw extended from the handle and in position for use. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the arm which is provided with the can opener and the bottle opener extending from the handle so that either the can opener or bottle opener may be employed. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line-aa of Fig. 1.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a handle 1, an implement arm 2 and an implement 3, the latter here shown as acork.
screw. The handle is made of spring steel rod or other suitable material bent inthe form of a circle open at one side and having oultwardly extending arms 4 at said open s1 e.
' The implement arm 2 is flattened on opposite sides, is substantially U-shaped to provide an opening in its central portion and.
is provided with suitable implements, here shown as a can opener 5 and a bottle cap opener 6. The said arm 2 is provided at its open side with parallel portions 7 which respectively bear, against the inner sides of the arms 4 of the handle. The size' and shape of the arm 2, with its implements 5 and 6, is such as to enable such arm to be disposed in the opening formed in the center of the handle, and in the same plane with the handle. The tang or stem 8 of the .cork Screw. or implement 3 extends between the tangor portions 7 of the arm 2. A pivot 9 extends throu h alining openings in the arms 4 of the hand e and the tangs of the implepivotally connected together for the purpose combination tool I in the sai U-shaped arm and having a tang ments 2 3 so as to piv ')tal1y connect the implement arm and the cork screw to-the handle 'sothat either of them lmay. be.
extended from the handle by the same,
while the other is turned within the same, as shown in the drawings. 1 The opening pro-f vided in the U shaped arm 2 is such 'as toenable the cork screw orimplement 3 to. be
turned into such opening and disposed inthe common plane of the handle and arm 2 when shown in Figs. 1, anda.
Ido not desire to limit myself to the pref cise construction .and arrangement of de-' I0 vices herein shown and described, as modifications' may be made therein within the In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is scope of the. appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as'new and desire to secure by Let- 'ters Patent 1s:-
1. A combination tool comprising a handle forming an open rin and having parallel arms at the sides of the opening one side of the ring, a U-shaped armto lie in the open ring, having tangs bearing against the arms of the handle and provided with implement devices, an inner implement of'the size and shape to enable it to be disposed within the opening formed by the said U-shaped arm and having a tang extending1 between the tangs of such U- haped arm t e arms of the handle and the tangs of the U-shaped imple-- ment arm and the inner implement being set forth.
2. The herein described comprising a frame forming an open ring and having arms at the sides of the opening in the open side of such ring, a U-shaped arm having a can opener on one side thereof and a bottle cap remover on the other side thereof and. further provided with parallel tangs bearing against the inner sides of the arms of the tan a cork screw to lie in the opening extending between the tangs of such arm, and a pivot extending through and connecting the arms of the handle and the tangs of the implement arm and the cork screw.
In testimony whereof,I affix my signature 105 in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN A. MANSFIELD. Witnesses:
MORGAN J. M SWEENEY, WMQH. MoSwEENEY.
