SHEET-METAL PACKINGeGASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed September 5. i906- Suial No. 333.286-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED T. KRUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at De-. fiance, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Packingases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet-metal packing-cases especially designed for the transportation and storage of liquids contained in bottles and simila vessels.
i he invention relates to that class of sheetmetal acking-cases which are without a closed as stacking-cases,--that is,the bottles or containing vessels in the compartments or cells are so ported by means of a series of supportin ars interposed between and secured to t c lower portions of the sides and ends of the case, and said sides and ends are tapered or inclined so that the cases may be stacked one above the other, the heading formed about the lower edges of the sides and ends of the case being ada ted to take over the beading formed about t e upper edges of the case upon which it is stacked or supported.
The paramount object of the invention is to produce a generally-im roved case of this class which will be chei of manufacture, durable in use, and mucl better adapted to its intended purposes than any other invention of the same class with which I am acquainted.
Another object is to provide a series of sup porting-bars for bottles to be used in conjunction withsheet-metal partitions or divisions 'referabl constructed like those disclosed in atent Ni 805,424, issued to me Nov. 21, 1905, and which will not only tend to strengthen and support the lower edges of the sides and ends to which it. is attached, but, by reason of the construction, herein shown and described, be better adapted to sinip e in construction,
support the case with its contents upon the ordinary conveyer now in common use by brewers and 'form a convenient bearing-surface for the same.
With these ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the '5 appended claims.
ottom and also to that class known of substantially Referring to the drawings, forming a part of this specification, Fi ure 1, is a transverse sectional view ofa pac -ng-case constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the lower portion of thefcase. Fig. 3, a horizontal sectional view taken through- line 3,3, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, a detail perspective view of one end of one of the supporting-bars secured to the walls of the lower portion of the case. Fig. 5, a detail perspective view showing relative position of .the main cross supportingbar and one of the series of supporting-bars intersecting the same. i Fig. 6, a similar view showing middle portion of the main cross su porting-bar.
imilar characters of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings. v
The improved case is preferably made up of side and end walls 1, and 2, suitably secured at the corners of the case and, preferalgly, provided with a series of strengthening ri s 3. i
The upper and lower edges of the sides and ends are bent over and about forming a beading 4, and, preferably, inclosing a wire 5, and near said beading 4, the said sides and ends are bent or crimped to form a con-;
tinuous or encircling inwardly extending strengthening-flange or ledge 6, ada tedto contain 'a flat reinforcing stren thenmg-bar or iron 7, extending lOIlHtlldlIlitl yabout the said sides and ends as s own most clearly in Fi 3,of the drawings.
. he u per strengthening-flan e or ledge forms a id-supp' ing-flange ta "ng under the beaded or marginal edges of the lid or cover 8, and the lower flange or led e forms a bottom-supporting-fiange adapter to rest upon the upper edges or beadim oHhe sides and ends of the case upon whici the case is stacked, and also taking under and supporting the ends of a series of supporting-bars to be hereinafter described.
The sheet-metal partitions or divisions 9, are mounted and interposed between the sides and ends and secured thereto in any suitable and convenient manner.
A series of supporting'bars 10, of any suitable and convenient .form, but, preferably, ii-shape incross-section, as shown, are formed, in the present instance, out of sheet metal a dare adapted to take under and support th bottles 01" containing 1 manneras are secured the cross sheet-metal.-
vessels arranged inthe'cells prdvided by said over the outer sides of the case, in the same l partitions or divisions 9. The ends of the r supporting-b are 3.0, are provided with tongues= l0}, which take through slots in the walls of the case, and are bent, over the outer sides of the case.
The lower or depending portion of the T- supporti11g-bars has its ends cut away-to afford a notch or recess 13, to receive and take over the lower 'inwardly-extending flange (5, of the case, and the beading at the upper edge of the case upon which it is stacked, It will also be observed that the lower edges of said depending portion of the supporting-bars are ilush isvith the lower edges or beading of the sides and ends of the case thus giving further support and strength to the various parts of the case and providing a friction-bearing surface for engage- SO'nient with the conveyor. The supportingbars when cut away at the ends to afford a notch or recess to take over the flange 6, are, preferably, secured thereto by means of rivets 13 but the bars 10, may be of" any suitable form and. secured and supported directly to the walls of the case, Without the intervention of a flange, by means of the tongues 10, or the ends thereof may take into a recess formed by an outwardly-extended 40 flange (not shown) similar to flange 6, and not provided with a strengthening bar or Iron 7.
Having thus described my invention, without having attempted to set forth all the forms in which it rnay be inado, o all the through vertical openings orslots and bent modes of its use, I declare that what 'l-claiin and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
1. in a packing-case, inclined sides and ends bent to form continuous lid and bot- 5O torn-supporting-llangos and a beading-at the upperand lower edges ol said sides and. ends,
