LABEL-AFFIXING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE E. TAYLOR, of Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Aflixing Machines; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in machines for affixing labels to boxes and other articles.
One object of the invention is to so construct a label aflixing machine that labels may be mechanically applied thereby to boxes, or other articles, suitably placed in 1 the machine.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a label affixing machine that adhesive may be applied to the entire back of the label and that the entire label may be acted upon by presser devices to apply the label to the box or other article positioned to receive the same.
1 Another object of the invention is to improve the label feeding and glue applying devices to ether with the means for stripping the labelfrom the glue applying device.

At the feeding in side, or front, of the machine is mounted the side plates 37 and 38 which support a hopper formed of the inclined wall 39 having a 'thin lower edge, and the inclined bottom 40 having openings as 41 and rojections as 42, Figs. 3 and 6. On this ottom 40 are adjustably mounted the guides 43-43 between which thelabels are ed forward. Journaled in bearings of the plates 37-38 are .the shafts 44, 45 and 46;
.' the shaft 44 has a series of disks 47-47 eccentrically disposed as regards the axis of their shaft and having peripheries of friction material parts of which periphery work through the openings 41-41 of the hopper bottom at times calculated with reference to the desired feeding forward of the bottom label of a stack of labels in the hopper to feed said label between the roll sections 48 and 49 respectively of the shafts and 46. The shaft 44 has the sprocket 50 which is driven by the chain 51 working over said sprocket and over the sprocket 52 of the shaft 19; the shaft 46 has the gear 53 which meshes with the gear 54 on the shaft 34; while the shaft 45 has the pinion 55 meshing with the gear 53 of the shaft 46. Above the shaft 45 'is secured the plate 56 the edge of which extends close to the periphery of the glue roll 30, whereby a label thereon is smoothed out as it is drawn under the edge of said plate.
On the shaft 19 are mounted the cams 57-57 and 58-58; the cams 57-57 have cam paths as 59, shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and the cams 58-58 have cam paths as 60 indicated in said figure in broken lines. Pivotally supported on the frames 6-6 are the levers 61-61 which have bearings as 62 adapted to work in the paths as 59 of the cams 57-57; at the upper ends of the levers 61-61 are pivoted connecting rods 63-63 which are respectively pivoted to the slides 64-64 mounted on guides 65-65 which are secured at the sides of the machine near the rear thereof; on these slides 64-64 are fixed the inwardly extending members 66-66 these blocks 67-67 are the fixed jaw members 68-68 having the li s 69-69 which extend towards the glue r0 1 30. In the jaw members 68-68 are journaled the shafts 70-70 on which are mounted the lips 71-71 which are adapted to cooperate with the lips 69-69 at times. The shafts 70-70 have crank arms 72-72 pivotally connected by the rods 73-73 with the plates 74-74 which are pivotally mounted on the slides 64-64; as these slides 64-64 are reciprocated back and forth by the levers 63-63, and their connections, the lower ends of the plates 74-74 are moved between the pins 75 and 76 fixed in the machine; when the lower ends of the plates 74-74 strike the pin 75, in the forward movement of the slides 64-64 these ends of the plates are caused to swing backward and through the rods 73-73 to effect the rotation of t e shafts 70-70 to close the lips 71-71 towards the lips 69-69 to grasp the edge of a label in suitable position to be received between said lips while, when the slides 64-64 move backward sufficiently, the-free ends of the pivoted plates 74-74 are intercepted by the pins 76-76 and are swung so as that by the connections with the shafts 70-70 these shafts are rotated to swing downward the lips 71-71 and release the label.
At the rear end of the machine on extensions from the standards 7-7 is the guide plate 77 on which are slidably mounted the blocks 78-79 in which are journaled the shafts 80 and 81 on which are mounted the wiper ressers 82 and 83 having the somewhat exible wipers 84 and 85; the blocks 78 and 79 are moved inward and outward on the guide 77 by the connecting rods 86 and 87 pivotally mounted on the inner ends of the shafts 80 and 81 and pivotally connected with the upper ends of t e levers 88 and 89 which are mounted to swing on the frame members on which the guide 77 is supported and have the pinions 90 and 91. In ,vertical guides in the frame are movable the racks 92 and 93 which engage with the pinions 90 and 91 and, at their lower ends are pivotally connected by the links 94 and 95 with the corresponding ends of the levers 96 and 97 mounted to swin on the shaft 98, supported in the frame, and having at their other ends the bearings 99 and 100 which work in the paths respectively of the cams 58-58 which paths, as indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing are designed to swing the levers 94 and 95 upward and downward in succession to successively raise and lower the racks 92 and 93 to effect the successive sliding of the blocks 78 and 79 to move the same, and their related wipers inward and outward.

The drive chain 111 works over the sprocket 25 on the shaft 19 and over the sprocket '112 of the sleeve 113 furnished with the sprocket 114'and rotatable on a 10 stud extending from the upper portion of the frame. On the guide 77 are mounted the bearings 115 and 116 in which the shaft 117 having the disk 118 with its cams'119, 120 and 121, and the sprocket 122 is journaled;

Mounted for vertical movement in a guide of the bearing block 115 is the spring pressed per end which is pressed against the periphery of the cam disk 1 18 by the spring 126 located between a shoulder on said rod and a fixed part of the machine frame whereby a 126 to lift said rod and the clamping plate 127, on-the lower end thereof, away from the central supporting member 128 mounted on the guide 129 whlch is carried by the frame 30 and located near the comb 32. Glue, or other 27 the shaft 21 is driven by any ordinary belt working on one of its pulleys 2223, this motion of the shaft 21 being transmitted to the shaft 34 by the chain 36, working over the sprockets of these shafts, .whereby the shaft 34 and the mechanism connected therewith by the gears 33, 29, 54, 53 and 53 is driven,
a this mechanism including the glue roll 30, whereby the glue in the reservoir is mixed and a thin film of the glue is taken up by the periphery of the glue roll; at the same time the shafts 45 and 46 of the feed rolls 48 and 49 are driven, while the pinion 26 on said shaft 21 drives the loose gear 18 on the shaft 50 19. A pile of labels is now placed on the plate 40, between the guides 4343, the printed surfaces of the labels being uppermost, these labels are pushed forward on the plate 40 until they meet the inclined plate 39 which from its inclination permits the lowermost of the labels to extend beyond the upper labels and tends to press downward the labels as they are moved forward. A box is then placed on the form members 128130--130 to support one end of the box in position to receive the label, and boxes are successively placed, on and removed from, said combined form members during the feeding forward of the labels supplied with of the abel. During the downward moveward at its free end therod 1'5 actuated to bring the clutch member 17 intoen'ga'gement with the clutch member of the gear 18 thus connecting this gear with the shaft 19 whereby said shaft and the mechanism in driving connection therewith is drivenfromthe pinion 26 on the shaft 21.
Followin the operation as it progressively acts on the abels it will be seen that, as the shaft 44 is rotated, by the connections above described, its cam sections 47 will swin through the openings 41 of the'plate 40 and the peripheries of said sections will frictionally en age the under surface of the'lowermost la el, and will carry said" label forward between the rolls 48 and 49'between which the label will be fed to the periphery of the glue roll 30. The forward edge of the label being first applied to the glue surfaceon this roll 30 will be drawn forwardwith the roll and will first ass under the ed e of the plate 56 whereby t e label "is smoot e'd down on to the glue surface of said roll and glue is ap lied to the entire back of the label.

The action of the cams 5757, on their levers 61-61, is so timed with relation to the delivery of the labels to the comb 32 that, as a label is so delivered, the=levers 6161 are swung to draw forward the'rods 6363 and the slides 6464 with their members 67 carrying the grasping jaws the lips 71-71 of which are opened away from the lips 6969. When these jaws are carried sufficiently forward to receive the edge of a label positioned on the comb 32, the plates 74-74 strike the ins 75- 75 and swing backward to rock t e shafts 70 and close the lips 71-71 towards the li s 6969, thus grasping the edge of the labe between said -lips. Approximately at this time the cams 57-57 act to swin the levers 6161 backward, thus eflectingt ebackward movement of the slides 6464 and their jaws with the glued label until the label is drawn over the end, or side, of the box, located on the form members 128130130, when the plates 74-74 strike the stops 76-76 and effect the rocking of the shafts 7070 to swing the lips 71-71- away from the lips 69-69 to re ease the label.
, At or about the time the label is brought over the box the cam disk 118 has been r0- tated to a point where its cam 121 begins to bear against the roller bearing 125 on'the' rod 124 to force downward said rod and its clamping plate 127 against the action of the spring 126, the lower edge of the late 127 bearin transversely on the centra portion ment of the clamping plate 127 the rack 92 'is drawn downward by the swinging of the a lever 96, actuated by its cam 58, to swing inward the arm 88 and the block 78 connected thereto to carry the free edge of the wiper 84 close to the side of the clamp plate 127 the cam 119 nowacts against the roll 108 to swing outward the upper end of the arm 106, thus swingin the arm 103 downward and efiecting the ownward swinging ofthe resser 82 to bring the wiper 84 against the label on the box. The arm 88 is now drawn outward by the action of its driving connections and the wiper 84 is drawn outward with its block 78 and wipes this end of the label smoothly on the box.
Approximately at the time the wiper 84 is moved outward from the clamp 127 the cam 121 passes the bearing 125 and the clamp late is raised by the spring 126 while t 1e wiper 85 and its block 79 are moved inward by the swinging of the arm 89, which arm bein somewhat longer than the arm 88 moves t e block 79 inward farther than the block 78 was moved and carries the edge of the wiper 85 inward beyond the path in which the clamp plate 127 moves, thus when the cam 120 is brought to bear against the bearing 109 arm 107 is swung outward and the arm 104 moves downward to bring the edge of the wiper 85 to bear on a portion of the label beyond the line of the clamp plate 127 and to the point at which the edge of the wiper had previously began its wiping action on the label. After bemg thus swung downward the wiper 85 and the block 79 are drawn outward by the outward swinging of the arm 89, the edge of the wiper pressing downward and smooth ing the part of the label over which it works, if-in this movement.
After the aflixing of a label to one box, said box is removed from the forms 1 28130130 and another box is laced in osition.
e I ave herein described specific forms of mechanism, and specific combinations of parts, whereby the objects of the invention are carried into practice, it is not my intention to thereby limit my invention to such specific features.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A label affixing machine comprising a glue roll having a series of slight annular deressions, means for rotating said roll, means or su plying glue to the periphery thereof, a smoot er plate having an edge located near the roll, means for feeding labels to said roll beneath said smoother plate, and means extendin into said depressions for stripping labels om said roll.
2. A label afiixing machine comprising glue a plying means, a guide located at one side 0 said means, a slide movable on said guide for adjustment, a jaw fixed to said .slide, a shaft journaled in said jaw and having a lip thereon, means for rotating the shaft, and means for reciprocatin the guide.
3. A label afiixin "mac e comprisin guides, slides movab e on said guidesan having laterally extending guide members, blocks adjustable on said guide members and having fixed jaws shafts journaled in said jaws and having lips complemental to said jaws and crank arms, plates ivotally mounted on the first mentioned s 'des, means for moving said slides and means for intercepting the free end of the pivoted plate as and for the pur ose described.
4. In a abel affixing machine, the combination with a support for the article to which a label is to be applied, a clamp movable towards and from said sup ort and ada ted to bear against the centrall portion of the label whereby the surface of the label at the sides of said clamp are exposed for the action of pressers, and means eriodically moving said clamp towards and from said support, of a pair of wipers, and means for operating said wipers in succession, one of said wi ers being mounted to swing across the path of said clamp as described.
5. In a label affixing machine, the combination with a support for the article to be labeled, of a pair of wipers mounted to slide and swing above said support, and means for alternate y operating said wipers to wipe against the label from the central portion towards the ends.
6. In a label affixin'g machine, the combination with a support for the article to be labeled, a clamp movable towards and'from said sup ort, and a pair of wipers pivotally mounted on means movable towards and from the path of the clamp, of means for op-- and means for effecting t e partial rotation of the shafts.
8. In a label affixing machine means for pressing the label in place comprising a pair of wipers pivotally mounted in sliding members, and having crank arms furnished wlth pins, pivoted guides in which said pins are engaged, means for operating the sliding members, and means for swinging the piv oted ides.
9. n a label aflixing machine, the com.- bination with a support for the article to be labeled, a transverse guide above said support, a spring lifted clamping device centrally mounted on said guide, a cam disk rotatably mounted above sa1d clampmg de- 5 Vice and having a peri heral cam, adapted to act thereagainst, an alternately disposed side cams, a pair of blocks slidable on said guide, means for reci rocating said blocks, shafts journaled in t e blocks and havmg 10 cranks, Wipers mounted on the shafts and a pair of guides, pivotally mounted on the transverse guide, in whichthe cranks of said shafts are engaged, and having spring re tracted lever arms adapted to be operated by the side cams of said cam disk, as and for the 15 purpose described.
