Be it known that I, JED N. LANDON, a citi- Zen of the United States, of Hartland, in the county of Wind'sor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reels, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification. v
My invention relates to that class of reels which are adapted to receive coils already formed, to form loose ropes or wires into coils and to allow the removal of coils after they are formed on it and consists in mechanism by which the guards of one end of the reel may be easily withdrawn so as to allow the placingon or taking off of a coil,
The construction is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

B is the center, of the reel and is j ournaled in recesses formed for it at the top of the frame-work as shown and is held there by two hasps L, L1, L2. The said hasps are held at one end L1 by a staple and at the other end L2 by a turnv button or any suitable device which will admit of an easy release of 'the hasps. The reel may be turned by the crank H H1.
Upon the arbor B two circular flanges C and O1 may be secured by pins, keys or screws. To theser flanges radial arms or guards may be attached. These arms are made in a peculiar manner, see Figs. 2 and 3, thus a simple piece or bar of metal is formed with a member D' which is riveted to the flange C and extends radially to the point T,
f thus forming one of the guards of the reel,
thence it is bent back on to itself to the point T1, thence it is bent so as to form the incline part D1. At T2 it is again bent to form the radial arm D2 which is secured to the flange C1. In the drawings I have shown five of these bent bars but any other number may be used. It will be observed that the above described construction produces a non-collapsible drum, having at the larger end fixed guards, thus I have in fact a firm coned said sliding sleeve is at the left end of the arbor-as Shown in Fig.. 2, in which case the arms K are vertical and form guards as shown in Fig. 2, but when the sleeve is drawn over to the right, as shown in Fig. 3, then all of the arms K will be drawn in and under so as to assume the position shown in Fig. 3, that is, one side of the reel has no guards and the coil may be removed from it.
The use of my reel may be set forth as follows We suppose that the coil is already formed but not on the reel, in which case the guards K are drawn down and in, as shown in Fig. 3, and the reel is taken off from its frame by unlatching the hasps L L and lifting it out of its bearing and free from the frame; now the coil may be placed upon the reel and the guards K forced outward by sliding the sleeve K2 to the normal position,
then -the reel with the coil upon it may be placed in its position on t e frame and fastened by the hasps. For Winding on a rope wire or chain, it is only necessary to start it on the reel by holding. it untillthe coil has begun to bind, then continued turning will coil up the Whole or as much as may be desired of the rope, wire or chain.
It is evident that this reelmay be used for any purpose for which ordinary reels are used.
. To remove the coil from the reel-it isonly necessary to take the reel from its frame and hold it in such a position that the weight of the coils will bear against the guards. This action will cause them to disap ear automatically. By placing the reel ack upon the frame and giving the same a rapid turn with the crank the guards will assume their normal position as shown in Fig. 2.
Claims.
1. In a reel of this class, a suitable supporting frame, a main shaft and means for rotating it, a non-collapsible coned reeldrum mounted-upon said shaft, and having fixed guards at its large end, retracting guards at the other end of said drum and means for retracting them; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a reel of this class, a suitable supporting frame, a main shaft and means for rotating it, a non-collapsible eoned ree1- drum mounted upon sai shaft, and having fixed guards at the large end of said reel-v drum; retraeting guards at the other end of said drum, a sliding sleeve mounted upon said main shaftl and being pivotally oonneeted to said retraoting guards; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
