To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBERT L. SMITH, citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Edri, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in coal cutting machines, and the invention relates more particularly to a novel form of frame work for supporting coal cutting machines when in operation.
My invention aims to provide positive and reliable means for effecting a perfect positioning of a coal cutting machine when in operation, said means being constructed whereby the coal cutting machine can be easily and quickly adjusted to any desired position.
Heretofore, inclined platforms have been used in connection With coal cutting machines for properly positioning the same relative to the coal which is to be cut by said machine, the platforms having been inclined in order that the machine may be moved forward as the coal Was cut by said machine. These platforms are cumbersome to handle, extremely difficult to properly position and occupy a large space within a mine where the machine is being used. The material from which the platforms are constructed isalso susceptible to injury and becomes water soaked and very heavy to handle, the latter defect being at least the most important which my invention tends to overcome.
In constructing my improved platform, I have devised novel and adjustable means for supporting a coal cutting machine, said platform being constructed whereby the machine may be adjusted and positioned at any desired angle relative to the coal to be operated upon and throughout the entire construction of the platform, I have used material which is strong and durable and free from all danger of being injured by water or the atmospheric conditions within a coal mine.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts Ito be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure l is an improved plan view of `my improved platform for coal cutting ma# chines. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the platform showing the aXle of the coal cutting machine in section. Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view of one of the adjustable supports or standards of the platform. central vertical sectional view of the aXle adjusting device used in connection with the platform. To put my invention into practice, I construct my improved platform of four standards 1, l and 2, 2, the standards l, l supporting the front of the platform, whiley thestandards 2, 2 support the rear of the platform. The standards l 1 are of a less height than the standards 2, 2 and are provided with bearing boxes 3, 3. The standards 2, 2 are substantially cone-shaped and are provided with screws 4, 4, said screws being mounted in sleeves 5 carried by the , standards 2, 2. Revolubly mounted upon each standard is a hand wheel', the hub portion 7 of which is in threaded engagement with the screw, and by means of the hand wheel, the screw can be elevated or lowered as desired. The upper ends of the screws 4, 4 support the rear end of a rectangular frame, said frame Fig. 6 is ai consisting of side rails 9, 9 and end rails 10,
l0, said rails being preferably constructed of strong and durable angle iron or steel. The forward end of the frame is provided with outwardly .extending spindles 11, 11 and said spindles are pivotally mounted in the bearings 3, 3 carried by the standards l, l.
The hub 7, is provided with a bushing 7 which seats in a socket or bearing provided therefor in the upper end of the standard 2, and pins 6 Work in a groove provided in said bushing 7 so that, as will be observed, when the hand wheel 6 and hub 7 is turned, the screw 4 will be moved up and down in the standard according to the direction of rotation im arted to the hand wheel 6.
Slida ly mounted upon the sid'e rails 9, 9 is a platform 12, said platform being provided with a depending box 14 carrying a collar 15, through which passes a screw threaded rod 16 journaled in the end frames 10, 10 of the frame 8, and arranged longitudinally of said frame. The one end of the screw threaded rod 16 is revolubly mounted in one of the frames 10, while the opposite end of said rod protrudes through the other of said end frames and is provided with a hand wheel 17 by which the screw threaded rod may be rotated to adjust the platform 12 upon the side rails 9, 9 of the frame 8. Through the medium of the screw threaded rod 16, the platform 12 can be moved from one end of the frame work to the other end, and in conjunction with this longitudinal adjustment, 1 have devised means for adjusting the platform laterally upon the frame 8. Revolubly mounted centrally upon the platforms is a large beveled gear wheel 18, which supports an auxiliary platform 19. The platform is provided at each end with an upwardly extending bracket 20 and in said brackets is journaled` the axle 21 of a conventional form of coal cutting machine. The axle 21 corresponds to the axle which supports a coal cutting machine, and in mountmg the cutting machine upon my improved platform, it is only necessary to detach the wheels from the axle and elevate the machine bodily to permit of the axle being j ournaled in the brackets 20, 20 of the auxiliary platform 19.
To circularly adjust the axle 21 of the coal cutting machine upon the platform, I journal in the end rails 10, 10 of the frame 8, a rod 22 having a` longitudinally extending spline groove 22 extending longitudinally thereof as shown in Fig. 1 and upon said rod is mounted a beveled gear wheel 23 having a feather 23 movably engaging the spline groove of the rod and, adapted to mesh with the beveled gear wheel 18 of the platform 12. The gear 23 is maintained constantly in mesh with the gear 18 when the brace member 232 which bears at its central part over the rod 22 and connected at the ends to the platform 12 as at 233, and thus partakes of its motion. One end of the rod 22 is provided with a handwheel 24, whereby the rod 22 may be rotated to impart a rotary movement to the gear wheel 18, and as said gear wheel is revolubly mounted upon the platform 12, the auxiliary platform 19 can be turned in order to position the axle .21 at any desired angle relative tothe platform 12, that is, to any position in a plane parallel with the frame 8.
By the construction of my improved platform, it will be observed that a coal mining machine mounted upon the same can be adjusted in any desired position, either longitudinally upon the frame 8 or partially revolved to position the coal cutting machine at an angle relative to its platform. As the movement of a coal cutting machine in operation is generally forward I have inclined my improved vplatform in order that the machine may be easily fed towards the coal or material in which it is operating. The machine is fed back and forth by the hand wheel 17, while the angularity of the machine relative to its platform is governed entirely by the hand wheel 27.
By referring to Figs. 7 and 8 of the drawings, it will-be observed that 1 have introduced certain features ofconstruction in connection with the operating rods of my improved platform, that permit of the bearings of the rods being easily and quickly lubricated, thereby insuring an easy adjustment of the platforms of the frame work 8.
The construction of the platform entirely dispenses with the continual moving of the platform, when a coal cutting machine is being used, it only being necessary to once position the platform of the machine in order that it may be manipulated in various positions and thereby accomplish various cuts within the coal that heretofore could not be made without first moving the platform which supports the coal cutting machine.
It will be noted by referring to Fig. 1
of the drawings, that the gear wheel 23 is by said standards, a platform revolubly mounted upon said frame, brackets carried by said platform and forming bearings for said cutting machine, an elevating device carried by said platform, means to revolve said platform, means to adjust said plat# form longitudinally'upon said frame, and means to adjust said frame, substantially as described.

4. A platform for coal cutting machines embodying an adjustable metallic frame, a platform slidably mounted on said frame and revoluble in a substantially horizontal plane, and means to adjust said revoluble platform.
