Before entering into a description of the operation ofmy improvement, I desire to say that the latter is applicable to both diaphragm will be utilized in the usual manner, its action being governed in the one case by the pressureofth'e steam and in the other by hydrostatic pressure.
The operation of my improvement is as follows :'The weight 13 is adjusted on the beam 14 to determine the amount of steam pressure required to elevate said beam to a horizontal position. When heat is required the thermostat is operated in the usual manner, thereby causing a pull to be exerted on the chain 16 to open the draft door 2, and also causingthe chain 19 to be slackened, and at this time the damper 24 will be opened and the doors 6, 21, closed. sure of steam, determined by the adjustment of the weight 13, has been obtained, said weight will thereby become elevated and. the beam l4'brought to substantially a horizon tal position, thus closing the door 2 and open ing the door 6, and the steam pressure will remain constant until the degree of heat required has been obtained, the damper 24 re maining open and the door 21 remaining closed during this time. When the thermostat operates, after the required degree of heathas been obtained, the chain 16 will thereby be slackened while the chain 19 will be tightened and pulled thereby opening the door 21. and closing the damper 24, the slackening of the chain 16 of course allowing the draft door 2 to remain closed while the weight 13 will drop thereby operating to close the door 6. l
[n my improvement it will, be. noted that the door 6 is below the point at which the furnace communicates with the chimney and is of course beyond the damper, while the door 21 is on the opposite side of the damper, and this arrangement is very effective in checking combustion.
1 It will be noted that when the elcvationof the beam 14 has caused the closing of the draft door 2 and checked the main draft by the opening of the door 6, the further heat required will be obtained at a stationary st 2am pressure, and this means a great saving in fuel. It will further be noted that I have made no fixed connection between the chain 16 and the draft door 2 but that the chain travels freely over a pulley secured to this door, and I obtain thereby a much better co-active operation of beam and draft door.
llaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a heat regulating apparatus, the combination of a steam furnace having a draft door at the bottom and provided with an expansible and collapsible diaphragm connected with the steam chamber, a beam operatively connected with said diaphragm and having thereon a slidable weight, a chimney the diaphragn'i When the presprovided in its lower portion with an opening leading into said chimney, a door closing said opening, a pipe whereby the products of combustion pass from the furnace into said chimney at a point above the door therein, a pivoted lever, a chain connecting the outer end of said lever to said chimney door, a second chain connected to the inner end of said lever and depending therefrom and having a weight secured to its lower extremity, said second chain being passed up over suitable pulleys and thence depending and secured to the beam weight, a third chain extending over a suitable overhead pulley and thence downwardly around a pulley secured to said draft door and thence upwardly and secured to said beam, and a thermostat connected to said third chain for operating the latter.
2. In a heat regulating apparatus, the combination of a steam furnace having a draft door at the bottom and provided with an expansible and colla sible diaphragm connected with the steam dhamber, a beam operatively connected with said diaphragm and havingltherco n a slidable weight, a chimney provided in its lower portion with an opening leading into said chin'mey, a door closing said opening, a pipe whereby the products'of combustion pass from the furnace into said chimney at a point above the door therein, a pivoted lever, a chain connecting the outer end of said lever to said chimney door, a second chain connected to the inner end of said lever and depending therefrom and having a weight secured to its lower extremity, said second chain being passed up over suitable pulleys and thence depending and secured to the beam weight, a shaft journaled within said pipe and carrying a damper, a wheelaffixed to said shaft outside the pipe and provided with a hub, a third chain suspended from the periphery of said wheel, and having a weight allixed to itslower end, a belt around said hub and havingone end secured thereto, a check-draft door for the furnace, a fourth chain led over a suitable pulley and connected with said belt and check draftdoor in such manner that the slackening of said chain will effect theclosing of said check draft door and opening of said damper, a fifth chain led over a suitable pulley and thbnce down around a pulleycarried by the draft door and thence-upwardly and secured. to i said beam, and a thermostat connected to; said fourth and. fifth named chains to operate the same.
