The objects of the invention ere, first, to provide it machine of this class with two independent needle bars, having means for imN parting independent bodilynorizontel movement to thm in addition to the ineens which imparts the simultaneous ve r tical movement, and second, to provide in such e machine means for varying or adjusting the seid independent bodily horizontal movement of' the needle bers in order to vary the width. of the stitches and produce widely dii'l'ering patterns of stitches for ornamental and seeming purposes. The needle vibrating mechanism comprises e vertical shaft J mounted to vibrate or rock horizontally in e bearing A4 mounted on the goose neck standard, and provided at its lower end with a crank erm J having a swveled forked block J2, extending down into grooves 1f formed in the periphery of e cem wheel or disk K mounted on the mein shaft B. By adjusting the eccentric blocks js and the blocks ja, 7'4 I am enabled to vary the pattern of the stitches as shown in Figs. S to 20. For instance, when the` needle bar carriers and the needle bars carried thereby are adjusted by the eccentric. adjusting blocks js to bring the needles in line with'each other, the stitch of one needle will follow in the path of the other and therefore cause one stitch to overlie the other as shown in Figs. 8, 12, 13 and 17 without regard to the adjustment of the block 7'3 j4. If, however, these eccentrics js are so adjusted as to bring the needle bars out of line from front to rear, then the lines of stitches will be more or less like those shown in Fi s.9,10,11,14,15,16,18, 19 and The a justment of the blocks 7'3, 7'4 debe given the needle bars and being independent of each other, one may be adjusted t0- Wards or from the axis 'of the slotted arms J3, J 4, a greater or less distance than the other and so one needle bar will be given a greater or less throw than the other and so the zig zag of its stitch will be greater or less than that of the other. Such differences in the zig zag being shown in Figs. 10, 11, 12, 13, the stitching where the needle bars are in line and one adjusting "tric adjusting blocks js.

In Fig. 7a, cani K, a horizontally turning cam K4 provided in its upper face with a'y cam groove ,t4 into which extends a roller fc5 mounted on the crank arm J of the vertical needle bar carriers operating rock shaft J andthis cam K4 is secured to or formed on the upper face of a gear M j ournaled on the bed A and in mesh with a pinion M on the main shaft. In Fig. 7b, which shows my preferred form, the cam K5 is mounted on the upper face of the gear M and is strad dled by a forked crank arm Jlo, having a split at the base of its fork and there provided with a screw J to draw the arms of the fork together and take up vean Y Y these several cam mechanisms the parts are so timed and shaped that the needle bar carriersH, I, will be vibrated only when the needles are to be moved bodily in a lateral direction.
The loop taking and feed mechanisms coe operate with the needles in the same manner as in other Union Special machines.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A sewing machine comprisingktwo independentA vertically and laterally movable needle bars, adjusting devices to adjust the out of line, means for nnparting independent lateral movement t'o the needle bars,mcans for adjusting the length of stroke of such lateral movement and means for simultaneously reciprocating the needle bars vertically; substantially as described.
2. A sewing machine comprising a driving bar operated thereby, two oscillating needle bar carriers and each having a needle bar mounted therein and reciprocated simultaneously vertically from the needle arm, a vertical rock shaft operated from the main shaft, and. two connecting rods connecting the said two needle bar carriersA with said vertical rock shaft for oscillation thereby,- substantially as described.

A sewing n'lachine comprising two independent oscillating needle bar carriers and two needle bars respectively reciprocated simultaneously vertically on they said carriers, a vertical rocking shaft operatively connected to the main shaft and having-'a transverse head on its up` er end, and two connecting rods ad j ustably connected at one end to said transverse head and at their opposite ends connected to said needle bar carriers forimparting independentfoscillation thereto; substantially as d cscribed.
4. A'sewing machine comprising two independent oscillating needle b ar carriers, and two needle bars respectively mounted on the two needle bar carriers for simultaneous vertical reciprocation therein, an adjustable eccentric block on each needle carrier, a vertical rocking shaft geared to the main shaft for operation thereby and connecting rods operatively connected at one end to said vertical rock shaft and at their opposite ends strapped to said eccentric needle bar carriers to said adjustable blocks;
5. A sewing machine comprising two independent oscillating needle bar carriers, and two needle bars respectively mounted on the needle bar carriers for simultaneous vertical reciprocation, a vertical rocking shaft geared to the main shaft for operation therefrom and provided at its u per end with slotted arms having adjustah e blocks, and two connecting rods connectin the substantially as described.

A sewing machine comprising two independent, oscillating needle bar carriers, each av'ing an adjustable eccentric blockfbolted thereto, two needle bars res ectively mounted on said carriers for simu taneous vertical reciprocation from the needle arm, a vertical rock shaft geared to the main shaft and provided at its upper end with transverse, slotted arms, adjustable blocks mounted on the sltted arms, and connecting rods strapped to the eccentric blocks'at one end and at their other ends connected to the said adjustable blocks; substantially as described.

A sewing machine comprising two independent horizontally oscillating'needle ,bar carriers having yrespectively the two needle bars thereon for simultaneous vertical reciprocation, a vertical rocking shaft provided at its upper' end with a transverse head, rods connecting the two needle bar carriers with said head, a forked crank arm on the lower .end of said vertical rock shaft, a rotary cani stantially as escribed.
