UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER A. HALL, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL ELECTRIC COM- PANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
INDICATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER A. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Indicating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for indicating the circuit conditions of an electrical transformer or regulator of the type in which certain coils or turns of the transformer are cut in or out by a rotary switch mechanism.
In certain types of transformers or regulators the circuits are so arranged that the rotary switch mechanism makes two complete revolutions with respect to the switch dial in shifting the regulator or transformer from the condition of maximum boost to minimum boost. As the result it is impossible to determine from an inspection of the transformer dial, whether the switch mechanism is making its first revolution or its second.
In describing my invention I have not considered it necessary to illustrate the rather complex circuit arrangements of such transformers, for my invention can be readily understood and will be readily appreciated if it be remembered that the rotary switch mechanism makes more than one complete revolution in changing the regulator or transformer through one complete cycle or from the condition of all in to all out.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of current regulator equipped with my improved indicating device; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with parts of the casing broken away to show the main shaft of the regulator, and to show the indicating device; Fig. 3 is a detail of the indicator.
The regulator case 1 supports on its front a slab 2 of insulating material on which are mounted switch clips 3 connected with the coils of the transformer. The rotary switch mechanism 4 is provided with adjusting handles 5 by which it may be rotated to make contact successively with the clips 3, and thereby cut coils in or out of the current carrying winding.
The main shaft 6 of the switch mechanism is provided nth an extension 7 which projects through almost to the back of the regulator case and carries at its back end a disk 8 on which is mounted a spiral ribbon 9 of metal. A pointer 10 is pivotally mounted to the back of the regulator case and is pro vided at its lower end with projecting fingers 11, which engage with opposite sides of the spiral ribbon and thereby shift the position of the pointer through a small arc when the disk and its supported ribbon are rotated. The pointer is off-set at its supporting pivot 12 so that when the regulator 1s in its midposition, so far as regulation is concerned, the index of the pointer will be in the mid position on the index plate 13 which projects u ward from the back of the regulator case. If the switch mechanism is rotated in either direction from the mid position the pointer will follow the ribbon spiral, and thus indicate the extent and direction of rotation of the switch mechanism and consequently the electrical condition of the transformer or regulator.
WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In an electrical regulator, a rotary switch adapted to make more than one complete revolution for a complete cycle of the regulator, a pivoted indicator, and gearing between said switch mechanism and said indicator adapted to produce a movement of said indicator through a relatively small are for a predetermined movement of said switch mechanism.
2. The combination with a rotary switch mechanism of a shaft therefor carrying a spiral, a pivoted lever adapted to engage said spiral, and indicating means actuated by said lever.
3. An electrical apparatus having a rotary switch mechanism, a shaft therefor carrying a spiral, and a pointer engaging said spiral and moved thereby.
4. The combination with a rotary switch mechanism, of a pointer, and means for moving said pointer through a relatively small are when said switch mechanism makes more than one complete revolution.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this fourth day of June 1906.
WVALTER A. HALL.
