LAZAR PIERRE, OF FOLSOM, LOUISIANA.
WHEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed January 3. 1906. Serial No. 294.491.
` To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAZAR PIERRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Folsom,
will enable others skilledr in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
'Ihis invention relates to wheels and more particularly to vehicle wheels and has for its object to provide a wheel which may be produced at a low figure and which w ill be so constructed that new spokes may be placed therein without removing the felly therefrom.
Other objects and advantages u ill be apparent from the following description.`
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is an elevation of the present wheel. Eig. 2 is a section taken longitudinally of the hub on line .22 of Eig. l. Eig. 3 is a detail view in end elevation of one member of the hub, showing some of the spokes in place in the slots formed therein. Eig. 4 is a detail view showing the fastening for the tire. Eig. 5 is an elevation of the hub.
e Referring now to the drawings, there isl shown a wheel including a central hub divided transversely to form two members 5 and 6, each including yan inner cylindrical portion 7 and an outer tapered portion 8, the complete hub thus having the ordinaryT general form. Alining central passages 9 are formed longitudinally through the members 5 and 6 of the hub and the inner face of each of the cylindrical portions 7 is provided with a plurality of radial slots l0, these slots communicating with the central passages and opening through the outer periphery of the cylindrical portions and being separated by resultant web shaped solid portions ll.
A plurality of spokes l2 are disposed one in each of the slots l() and the inner ends of the spokes are beveled at their opposite sides, as shown at 13, the extremities of these beveled portions resting against the usual axlebox 2l which its within the passage 9. The intervening solid portions ll vextend inwardly beyond the inner faces of the spokes,
and these inwardly extending portions of the solid portions of one member of the hub lie between the corresponding portions of the other member, so that the solid portions 1l of the two members interlock to prevent independent movement of the members with respect to each other and the portions ll of one member rest against the spokes which are engaged in the slots of the other member and are clamped thereagainst by means of bolts 14 engaged in both members of the hub, to hold the spokes against displacement. The bolts extend between the spokes, as shown.
A felly 15 is provided and has the usual inwardly opening sockets 16 in which the outer ends of the spokes are engaged and a tire 17 is engaged with the felly and has flanges 18 extending inwardly over the edges of the latter. The tire is secured upon the wheel by means of a yoke 19, the spaced legs of which are passed through the tire and through the felly and have engaged therewith inwardly of the latter a conning plate 20.
The members 5 and 6 of the hub may be leach cast integral of metal, as will be readily understood.
What is claimed is:
A wheel comprising, in combination, a hub consisting of two cylindrical members each having an opening extending longitudinally therethrough, and a series of slots formed in its inner end, the slots of each member radiating directly from the longitudinal opening therein and communicating therewith, said members being disposed with the portions between the slots in interlocking engagement; an axle-box disposed within the longitudinal opening of said members; spokes having tapered inner ends fitted in said slots and extending into said opening, in contact with the axle-box; a felly carried by the outer ends of -said spokes, and clamping bolts engaged in said members and extending between the spokes, to retain the'latter in position and prevent endwise movement thereof.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses. v
LAZAR PIERRE.
