and exact description ofthe invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. L
This inventionrelates to portable operative mechanical apparatus and mechanism which may be constructed in various sizes, but is particularly adapted to be constructed in suitable sizes to be used as toys,'both for entertainment and instruction, and the invention has reference more particularly to self-contained mechanical apparatus in which the power for operating the mechanism is developed by means of parts of the apparatus.
The objects of the invention are to provide an attractive entertaining toy adapted to be operated at a low rate of expense for power, and to provide particularly an aerial swing of suchconstruction as to be adapted to be knocked down, either for shipment, for transferring from place to place, or for convenience in storing the toy, a still further object being to provide an electromagnetically operated aerial swing, adapted to be operated with the least amount of electric current.
With the above-mentioned and minor objects in view, the invention consists in a toy aerial swing comprising a rotative vertical shaft, and guides therefor, folding arms mounted on the shaft and supporting a plurality of swings, an electro magnetic motor, a platform for supporting the motor and apparatus, a battery for the motor and a musical instrumentconnected with the motor, and the invention consists further in the novel parts and the combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

j In the practical embodiment of the invention, suitable metals are usually employed in the manufacture of the various parts wherever found convenient, and the swing apparatus is so designed that it may .be operated when desired by other means than that comprised in the invention, the motor and battery herein described however, being most desirable in order that the toy may be complete and compact in itself.
The invention comprises a circular platform which is composed of a central main Asection G, square in plan and having at the of, each side of the main section having two openin s c and c therein, and two bearings d and that are lower than the top of the main section, each removable section having a pair of projections e and e attached thereto and adapted to enter the said openings and to engage the tops of the bearings and extend under and engage the under side of the main section so that when the platform is complete the tops of all of the sections are iiush or in one and the same plane. The removable sections may be disconnected from the main section by elevating their free ends and withdrawing the projections thereof from the openings of the main section. Each removable section has a suitable number of posts f attached to the top at the peripheral edge thereof, and a curved railing g is attached to the posts so that when the parts are assembled the platform will have a circular railing extending on its top along the periphery thereof.
A suitable tower is mounted on the main section of the platform and preferably comprises four posts 1, 1', 12, 13, attached to the corner portions of the section in slanting arrangement, the tops of the posts being connected together by a cap piece h. The posts are provided with suitable braces and a roof i is supported by the posts at a suitable distance above the platform, leaving space under the roof for the motor.
The electro magnetic motor is mounted on the middle portion of the main section of the platform and preferably comprises a frame having a base and two side members k and 7c', there being a suitable number of electro .magnet windings Z, on cores suitably connected together and mounted on the base between the side members of the frame, and an armature m, having an opening 13 therein, the armature arranged being above the cores and connected at one end thereof by a pivot n to the side members of the frame.
A rotative shaft o, having a crank p, is mounted in the sidemembers of the frame and a pitman g connects the free end of the armature with the crank, said shaft having a grooved pulley r secured thereto between the frame members c and c, anda grooved pulley s, secured to the shaft outside of one of the frame members. Also a cam t is secured to the rotative shaft to form a part of the make-and-break device for magnetizing and de-magnetizing the magnet cores, the.
windings of the cores being suitably connected with a part of the motor frame as will be understood. Another part of the makeand-break device comprises a contact arm u which is pivoted between its ends to an insulator u', by a pivot 14, one end of the arm` being elastic and arranged opposite to the cam t, the other end of the arm extending through an opening in the main section G of the platform and being connected by a screw 15, working in an insulated nut o', that is carried by the arm, the screw being mounted in a journal support 16 which is attached to the main section of the platform. An operating stein o is connected by a knuckle 17, to the screw 15, the outer end of the stem being supported and guided in a hook bearing 18, which is attached to the removable section H of the platform so that the stem may be disconnected from the hook-support and swung around as indicated in Fig. 11, when it is desired to disconnect the section H from the main section of the platform.
l A case 19 is attached to the under side of the main section G, and supports a suitable number of batteries (preferably dry batteries,) as 2O and 21, connected together by a circuit wire and suitably connected with the windings of the electro magnets, one of the batteries being connected by a wire 22 to the arm u.
The base of the motor frame is provided with a socket bearing 23, in which a vertical shaft J, having a conical bearing 24, is rotatively supported, the shaft extending through the opening 13, and a grcoved pulley w is secured to the shaft and connected by a belt to the pulley 1, of the main shaft. A ring y is secured to the upper portion of the shaft J, above the cap 7L, which guides the upper end of the shaft. A suitable number of' arms 25 are connected by pivots 26 to the ring y, and are adapted to fold against the tower as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, the arms being normally held in horizontal positions by means of a collar 27 that is secured to the top of the shaft and links 28 hooked into the collar and to the arms. A suitable number of cars K, or the like are suspended by means of links or cords 29, to the outer ends of the arms 25, the cars being adapted .to swing outwardly by centrifugal force when the shaft J rotates.
A mechanical musical instrument L is mounted on the main section G of the platform adjacent to the motor, and the instrument may be variously constructed, it being provided with an operating pulley 30 connected by a belt 31 to the pulley s of the main shaft.
It should be understood that in lieu of the cars K, various other carriers may be substituted, it being designed to place dolls and various images, in the cars or on the carriers, for amusement purposes. 1n practical use, when the apparatus is not in operation the contact partof the arm u will be held out of reach of the cam t, and in order to start the motor, the stem o is to be rotated so as to move the arm u about its l pivot to bring the contact part thereof within reach of the cam, then the main shaft 0 may be turned slightly so as to make contact and energizepthe electro magnet, when the' motor ofthe electro magnets periodically attracting the armature m, and the speed of the motor may be regulated by manipulating the stem o, so as to effect a longer or shorter period of contact between the cam t and the contact end of the arm u, as may be desired. The motor will rotate the shaft J and thereby swing the cars K in a circle above the platform, as will be understood.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is- 1. An aerial swing including a platform comprising` a main section, supporting legs attached to the main section, and a plurality of platform sections attached removably to the main section; a motor mounted on the main section of the platform, a battery mounted under and supported by the main section of the platform, a tower mounted on the main section of the platform, a vertical shaft mounted in the tower and having a pulley, a belt connecting the pulley and the motor, and a controlling de'vice for the motor having an operating stem extending under one of the plurality of platform sections and detachably connected therewith.
3. An aerial swing including a platform comprising a main section having supporting legs, and a plurality of portable sections attached removably tothe main section and provided on the tops thereof with posts having railings attached thereto 5 a tower mounted on the main section of the platform, a vertical shaft mounted rotatively in the tower and having a ring attached thereto, a plurality of arms pivoted to the ring, swings supported by the arms, and means for rotating the vertical shaft.

An aerial swing including a platform comprising a main section provided with supporting legs and having a case attached to the under side thereof and a tower attached to the top thereof, and a plurality of portable sections attached removably to the main section 3 a motor mounted on the main section` of the platform, a battery supported by said case, a vertical shaft mounted in the tower and connected. with the motor, arms mounted on the vertical shaft, and swings supported by the arms.

An aerial swing comprising a platform having a tower attached to the top thereof and a case attached to the bottom thereof, an electro-magnetic motor mounted on the platform and having a plurality of drive pulleys and make-and-break devices, a battery sup ported in the case beneath the platform and connected with the make-and-break devices, a musical instrument mounted on the platform adjacent to the motor and having a pulley in connection with one of the drive pulleys of the motor, a roof attached to the pulley of the motor, arms mounted on the vertical rotative shaft, and swings supported by the arms.
