WILLIAM V. D. KELLEY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
' GAB-BURNER.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed June 8. 1907! Serial No. 876,908.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it" known that I,-W1Lr.mu V. D. KEL- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of 'whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to gas burners, and more particularly has reference to a thermostatically actuated gas burner wherein the gas'is automatically turned off and on in orderto periodically illuminate'a' sign or other transparency, or in other relations where=it is desired to periodically vary the' .heator light derived from a gas flame. 1 More especially, the present invention is intended to periodically operate a gas burner "used for illuminating a sign adapted to be thermostat operates-the coc I ing tip 2,.andacontro I passage 4 therethrough, so that the gas .isfxdetermined according to the periods so that the'gas switch will onlysuflicient flow of gas is used in places where it is impracticable or undesirable to use electricity. vAccordmgto this -mvent1on, I have provided a gas burner with a cock connected to becontrolled by .a thermostat in such manner that the contraction and ex ansion of the to vary' the flow of gas, and consequently the light and heat given out by the burning gas. In combination with the thermostatically controlled.
gas cock, is a magnetic or other retardim device, acting to prolong one .or both of the not be actuated at too rapid a rate.
The invention Wlll be more fully described inconnection with the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a gas burner embodying the invention; Fig. 2'is a rear view;
3 1s a front view; Fig. 4 is a top plan view; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a. complete apparatus. V
I 1 represents a supply pipe having a burnhngcock 3 havin& a gas ow of osition "of the cock 3. In one position,ja ful flow of gas is permitted, and in the other position rmitted to keep'the flame lighted: Inad 'tion to this automatic cock, the sup 1y pipe 1 will be provided with a handcoc m order to completely cut off'the flow when the device is not n operation.
- In order .to o The the cock 3, a thermo;
stat 61 referatbg; composed. of two strips of "1m? ritimide h them so that the opening of the gas cock stat 6 is secured to a support 7 carried by the pipe 1, and is curved upwardly and then downwardly to rovide the free end '8 which operates the 000 3. The curved portion of the thermostat 6 is positioned so as to extend preferably into the'blue portion of the ordinary illuminating gas flame and be heated thereby when the gas is flowing ati'ull pressure through the cock 3. Inorder to operate the cock, it is provided with two pins 9,
eccentric to itsaxis of rotation, between which pins the free end of the thermostat 6 engages so that the cock will be oscillated in one direction by the expansion of the thermostat to cut oil the flow of gas, and in the other direction by the contraction of the thermostat to-tu'rn' on the gas.
.The thermostat 6 is preferably com-posed of an outside strip of iron and an inside strip of to dark or dark to light as short as possible.
It is especiall desirable that the heat be quickly out 0 after the diminution of the gas actually commences, and to this end the ee end of the thermostat vibrates between the pole of a permanent magnet 10, which latter will attract the thermostat-by reason of'its being made of magnetic material. If not made of magnetic material, it should be provided with an armature of magnetic material. The operation of the magnet is to hold the thermostat against movement, until the power of the thermostat overcomes the pull of the ma net, whereupon the thermostat snaps quic y over and quickly reduces the flow ofgas, so that the flame immediately dies down instead of going down slowly as it would do if the thermostat did not sue over. When the thermostat cools, an
thereb turns the gas on it will start to move towar s the magnet, and will move more and more quickly as it gets closer to the ma net,
will be accelerated as well as the closin .In order to hold the conical coc 3 inits seat i a small spring 12 hearing against a head 13 is provided, and
this spring may be mounted on the magnet itself or elsewhere so as'to exert a slight tension on the cock 3, but not enough to revent'it from turning easily.
Preferab y, in making up the invention, it will be all mounted on the brass burner tube usually found in gas being attached to the extended service pipes or chandeliers to be- 'found almost everywhere. i
It will be seen that when-the gas flame is out down a draft of air might blow it out, and to prevent this, a globe 15 is provided which may carry lettering or advertising as Well, and thus be periodically lighted and,
dimmed as the thermostat automatically operates,
It will be seen that one cock 3 could control a number of burners with a single light or burner to constitute a pilot light which would be varied periodically as the thermostat operated the cock, and I do not restrict the invention'to using the burner 2, as the lightingburner, because this could be'solely to regulate the thermostat and other burners notnecessary to be shown, used for flashing the sign or signs. 1
The particular construction herein shown and described-is capable of various. modifications and changes without departing r'rom the scope of the invention which is not to be 1 restricted to any particular construction and arrangement.
" Having thus described my invention-, l declare that what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is,- 1. The combination with a gas-burner, of
burners and capable of the expansion to be heated by the flame,
cock and said thermostat for actuating the i disposed in'the field of the magnet and con nected to be vibrated by the expansion and contraction of the thermostat, asset forth.
and having one portion heated-by the-flamethe flow of gas', anactuating connection. be
tween the poles of the magnet, as
tube, of a bent thermostat mounted thereon to-be heated by the flame and having airee depending end, a cockin said tube adapted to vary the cutting off and'engaged by said thermostat to be 'actuated thereby, magnet mounted on said tube poles I pending portion of the thermostat.
