Referring to the drawings the pot 148, which is provided with a plunger chamber 149, is heated by a suitable burner 150, the products of combustion from which are conthrough the pot, as at k, k k instead of being caused to 'passonly about the outer walls thereof. To enable the pot to be completely emptied an opening is formed at the lowest point in the casting channel, which. opening is closed by a removable screw plug 203. The space between the upper end of the plug 203 and the upper wall of the channel forms a circulation opening or passage similar to 154.
The casting pot is moved to and from the mold by means generally similar to those heretofore employed in machines of the same character. These means are clearly shown in Fig. 1 where 205 designates a pivotally mounted plate connected with the 0t, and having a curved face against whic acts a cam disk 218. Said plate 205 bears on a roller 210 arranged at the lower end of an arm 208, pivotally connected with the 'ot at 209 and having its upper end connector by a spring 206 with an arm 207 on the frame of the ,machine. The spring 206 is connected with the arm 207 by an adjusting screw 211, by means of which the tension of the spring may be easily varied as desired. Bythis construction it will be seen that the spring 206 is arranged at some distance from the pot and is therefore not exposed to high heat.
The rod 212 of the plunger is connected to a lever 213 which is in turn connected, by a spring 214, to a lever 215, adapted to be rocked by the cam 218 engaging a roller 217 carried by a link 216 that is connected with said lever 215. The lever 213 is positively lifted by a disk 215 which bears against a depending lug 213 on said lever. A gap or notch 21.5 is formed in the periphery of the disk 215, and when the lug 213 is in alinement with the gap and the cam 218 passes so that the maximum force will be exerted on the downward movement of the plun er. That is, the cam 218 is of such form an so ositioned relative to the ga 215 that it will force the lever 215 to its owest position as the gap 215 approaches the lug 213; and therefore when the said gap is beneath the lug and the roller 217 is released the spiiilng 214 will be exerting its maximum u p The operation of the machine herein described may be briefly stated: as follows: When an assembled line of matrices has reached thecasting position, the melting pot is advanced by its cam and by means of the spring 206'yieldingly pressed against the form 106. The plunger is then released by the earn 215 and descending under the action of the spring 214 ejects molten metal through the delivery channel 152 and end piece 200 into the form. A portion of the metal re turns to the melting pot through the ducts i 154, 201, 202, but these ducts are so small taining the hottest portion of the metal, into I that'sufiicient metal is ejected into the form to coin letelyfill it and the matrices. f'arranging the parts so that the tension of the spring is materially reduced before the plunger is raised and gradually increased prior to the next downward movement of the plunger, it is possible to use a strong spring and shorten the time required for lifting the plunger. The strong tension of the s ring causes the plunger to descend sudden y so that the form is rapidly and completely filled with metal notwithstanding that some escapes from the ducts154, 201, 202 and 153.
