T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH FRENCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woonsocket-,inthe county of Providence,
` State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Inliing Devices for Stam ing and Numbering Machinesof which t e following is a specification,A reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to inliing-pads and holding `means therefor.
While not restricted to use in connection with machines of any particular construction, the invention has been designed with a view to'application to machines of the general class of which the machine of United States `Letters Patent to J. D. Humphrey and myself No.` 660,512, dated October 23, 1900,'constitutes an example.
The invention consists in a detachable inking-pad combined with novel means of holding `the same removably in working position in a machine of the general class aforesaid.
The present invention is shown in the accompanying drawings applied in connection with a ymachine embodying the improvements which are shown, described, and claimedk in my a plication for United States Letters `Patent or improvements in stampingandv numbering machines, filed July 13, 1906, Serial No. 326,035, of which this case is a division.y

Having reference to the drawings,-at 1, Fig. l is represented the fixed frame or base of the machine, and at 2 is shown the vibrating arm, constituting the type-head carrier. At 22 is a type-head carried by the said arm. At 2L is the shaft on which the said arm is xed, 1'a being one of the bearings with which the said frame or base is formed or provided for the reception of the said shaft, and within which bearings the shaft rocks as the arm is actuated. plication aforesaid,- the actuation of the arm 2 is effectuated by means of a cam (not shown) mounted upon the shaft 4.
At 1b is one of the bearings with which the frame or base 1 is formed or provided for the support of the shaft 4. The said shaft, it having -fixed thereon also the cam (not shown) by means of which the inking devices are actuated, is actuated intermittingly at the will of the operator by motion-transmitting and clutch-devices which are or may be substantially the same as in the Letters Patent and application aforesaid. The said motiontransmitting devices comprise the drivingshaft 5 mounted in bearings (one of which is shown at 1b, Fig. 1,) upon the fixed frame As in the Letters Patent and apor base, 1, the said driving shaft being provided with the band-pulley 5a which in practice receives a driving-,band or cord, not shown, and also being provided with a spurpinion 6 iixed thereon and meshing with a spur-gear 7 mounted upon shaft 4 with capacity to turn loosely thereon, but having combined therewith in practice the clutchdevices aforesaid by means of which, when it lis desired to actuate the arm 2'for the purpose of printing or stamping, the said spurgear 7 is clutched for one revolution to the shaft 4 and at the end of such revolution is caused to become automatically unclutched therefrom. By a rotation of the shaft 4 produced in the manner indicated, the vibratingarm or type-head carrier 2 is caused by the actuating cam on said shaft to make a worliing stroke and then return to its elevated retracted position of rest.
At 13 .is the inking-pad support, and at 14, 15, is shown the carrier-arm therefor. The forward portion of the said carrier-arm is connected pivotally to the lower extremities of suspending arms, one of which is shown at 16u, the said suspending arms being in turn connected pivotally at their upper ends with the type-head carrier arm 2. The rear portion of the carrier-arm 15 is connected pivotally to the upper extremity of a lever, partly indicated at 17, which is actuated by means of a cam (not shown) upon the shaft 4, and coperating contracting spiral spring 19, one extremity of which spring isconnected to the lever 17`-and the other. to a fixed pin or stud 19a rising from the rear portion of the fixed base or frame 1. As shaft 4 rotates, the linking-pad support is advanced by means of the said cam, and by the swinging movement of the supporting arms 16a its forward end is raised to press the inking-pad against the printing surfaces of the type-head while the latter still retains its elevated retracted position, and then prior to the movement of the type-head toward the work is lowered partly and withdrawn from between the type-head and the work. A portion of one of the type-wheels of the printing-head is indicated at 20. At 52a is a work-supporting cushion or pad carried by a base 52, and at 52b is a work-gage at the rear of said cushion or pad.
At 31g is an inking-pad. For the reception of the said inking-pad, the inking-pad support 13 is furnished with a pad-holder 32a, which is constructed to receive the inking-pad, and is provided with a spring-actuated latch 33, shown separately in Fig. 6, by
which the pad ordinarily is locked in place. In addition the said support 13 has provided in connection therewith a combined reliefdevice and ejector 34, also spring-actuated, shown separately in Fig. 7. The inking-pad is composed of a metallic frame or body, and a cushion made of suitable ink-absorbing substance, and is furnished at the sides thereof with oppositely-projecting lugs 31h, 31h, Fig. 5. Thejholder 32a is formed with an opening to receive the inking-pad, and occupies a position slightly raised from the plate or bed of the inking-pad support 13, it being provided in the present instance with spacing pieces or studs 32h, 32h, etc., that rest upon the said plate or bed and sustain the holder at the proper distance above the surface of the plate or bed.
Within the space between the holder and the plate or bed is tted the combined reliefdevice and ejector 34. The latter is U- shaped in plan as shown best in Fig. 7 to receive and partly inclose the rear portion of the inking-pad 31g as indicated in Fig. 2. It is movable in a direction from front to rear, being guided I in its movements by means of thefpin or stud 34a, carried by its rear portion and working in a slot 32f in the rear portion of the holder, and also by means of the studs, rivets, or screws 32, 321, at the Aopposite sides of the holder, the outer edges of its side-arms making contact with the said studs, etc. For the purpose of transmitting to the said relief-device and ejector the elastic force of an actuating spring 36, in such manner as to press the said device forwardly with relation to the holder, a swinging arm `37 is pivoted at 3TEL in connection with the holder and has its free end engaged within a notch 34h which is formed in the rear portion of the relief-device and ejector.
In my application aforesaid I have shown and described two inking-pad holders, one thereof fixed in position upon the inling-pad support, and the other adjustable upon the said support transversely of the printinghead in unison with the type-head 22. For convenience I have shown the adjustable inking-pad holder herein. It is provided with a cross-bar or plate 32%1 fitting within a slot that is made Athrough the support 13 and that extends in the direction of the length of the said support. The said cross-bar or plate is movable longitudinally within the said slot to permit of the adjustment of the said holder lengthwise of the support, and serves to guide the adjustable holder in being adjusted, as well as to keep such holder inl proper working position. The' latch 33 is pivoted to the body of the holder at 33h, and for the purpose of actuating the latch to cause it to engage with the corresponding lug 31h of the mixing-pad, and retain the latter in place within the holder, it has connected therewith one extremity of the spring 36 which has been. mentioned already as having an extremity thereof connected with the arm 37 in engagement ,with the combined relief-device and ejector. Thus the latch and the relief-device and ejector are connected by means of the said spring, which serves for the actuation of .both thereof. The engaging portion of the latch is pushed outward by the pressure against the inclined inpressing such device rearwardly and strain-v ing the spring 36. As soon as the lug which acts against the inclined face of the engaging portion of the latch passes such portion, the latch is caused by the tension of spring 36 to snap into position in front of the said lug, thereby locking the inking-pad in place, the lug in question being confinedV between the said engaging portion of the latch and the end of the adjacent side-arm of the combined relief-device and ejector. The spring 36 acts through the arm 37 with a tendency to hold the combined relief-device and ejector, together with the inling-,pad, forward with the said lug in contact with the said engaging portion of the latch. When the movement of arm 15 relative to the type-head carrier carries the inking-pad in to contact with the printing characters, the spring gives way so as to permit the inking-pad to yield backward in the holder suflciently toV obviate scraping of the inking-pad upon the surfaces of the printing-characters. In this manner, the relief-function is secured. When latch 33 is pressed back transversely by hand-so as to disengage it from the lug 31h with which it co-acts, the spring 36 acts through arm 37 to move the combined relief-device and ejector forward so as to push the inking-pad out of the holder. The forward movement of the said device is limited by the contact -of side-shoulders 32, 82, which are formed on the edges of the arms of such devices, with the studs 321, 32i.
The extent of the swinging movement of latch 33 is limited by means of one of the studs 32h, the said latch having formed therein a slot 33C, the opposite end-walls of which make contact with the said stud. For the purpose of causing the inlring-pad holder 82 to accompany the adjustable type-head 22 as the latter is shifted, a rockerarm 38 is mounted pivotally upon one sidepiece of the said adjustable type-head, the lower portion of such rocker-arm being connected pivotally with the stud 39, Figs. 2 and 3, projecting laterally from the body of the holder 32a. The said lower portion is forked to fit upon the neck of such stud between an arm of the said body and a collar or flange which is formed upon the stud. Consequently, when the adjustable typehead is shifted in one direction or the other, the corresponding inkingpad holder is compelled to accom any the same. The pivotal connec tion o the respective ends of the rocker-arm 38 with the adjustable type-head and with the adjustable inking-pad holder, permits the swinging movement of the inking-pad support with relation to the type-heads to take place without affecting the connections.
I claim as my invention l. ln combination, a type-head, operating means therefor, an inking-pad support having a swinging movement, operating means therefor, an inking-pad removably connected with the said support, a relief-spring operatively connected with the said inlring-pad to permit the same to yield as described to obviate scraping, and a latch by which the inking-pad is retained in its working relations against the pressure of the said relief-spring.
2. The combination with the hiking-pad support, and an inking-pad, of a spring-ac tuated combined relief-device and ejector applied to the said support.
3. The combination with the inkingad support, an inlring-pad, and a pad-ho der having an opening to receive the inking-pad, of a combined relief-device and ejector, and a latch to retain the inking-pad in place within the said holder. u
4. The combination with the inking-pad support, an hiking-pad, and a pad-holder, of a combined relieldevice and ejector, a latch to, retain the inking-pad in place within the said holder, and a spring connected with said combined relief-device and ejector and with the said latch.
