Description
No. 869,361. PATENTED OCT. 29, 1907. A. H. GRAVES CIGAR, STOGY, 6w.
APPLIUATION FILED JAN. 9, 1905. RENEWED MAR. 2, 1907,
UNITED STATES PATENT (OFFICE.
ALBERT H. GRAVES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CIGAR, STOGY, 850.
Application filed January 9. 1905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBEnT H. (leaves, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigars, Stogies, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cigars and analogous rolls of smoking tobacco, and refers more specifically to an improvement designed to secure the even or uniform burning, of the article.
The salient object of the invention is to provide a cigar, stogy or the like having circuniferential stria portions which are more combustible than the intervening main portions of the body of the article, so that in case the article begins to burn more rapidly at one side than another, the tire will, upon encountering one of these strize, follow the latter around the body and thus straighten the burning end portion.
Secondary objects of the invention are to provides simple, inexpensive treatment for accomplishing the above described end: to provide an improvement which may be added to any cigar after it has been fully completed in so far as regular manufacture is concerned: to provide an improvemeiit which does not disligure or otherwise render the article objectionable, and in general to provide an improved article of manufacture of the character referred to.
It is a fact well recognized by smokers that many cigars, stogies and analogous rolls, burn unevenly or more rapidly at one side than the other. and it; is con-ally well recognized that when this occurs the flavor of the smoke derived from the article is very greatly impairml and rendered objectionable. 'lh is uneven lnu'uing may be caused by an incomplete lighting of the end of the cigar initially, it may be caused by unevenness in burning quality of the article itself. it may be caused by the effect of exterior drafts as when smoking in the outer air, or it may be caused by allowing the cigar to become partially extinguished and thcn drawing upon it while one side only is ignited. In any case the objectionable effect remains. To overcome this defect I provide the cigar with one or more circiunfercntially extending strips or bands which will burn more certainly and preferably more quickly than the main body of the cigar so that when the tire encounters such strip or band it follows the latter around the cigar and thus renews the ignition of the entire end of the cigar evenly or approximately evenly around the entire circumference. Preferably I provide a plurality of these more rapidly burning portions, spaced at intervals apart throughout the length of the article so that it will be repeatedly corrected, if it tends to burn one-sidedly. In the preferred embodiment of my invention I provide more rapidly burning stria portions by treating these portions with a solution of saltpeter. Preferably the Specification of Letters Patent.

solution is so applied that it penetrates through the wrapper and into the body of the cigar some distance below the surface. I have found that this may be best accomplished by providing a series of minute nccdle pricks or punctures arranged in lincs or bands around the cigar and injecting the solution through these punctures or applying it to thc exterior and allowing it to soak in. llowcvcr. the invention may be carried out by simply applying tlic solution to the cxtcrior of the unpcrforalcd wrapper of the cigar and allowin it to dry thereon, but the result is loss perfcct. Preferably also the solution of saltpcter is colored, desirably by mixing therewith tobacco juice. so that this special treatment of the cigar is concealed.
in the accompanying drawing l igure 11 illustrates a whole cigar embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a partly burned cigar with the ash adhering and showing particularly the nnrnncr in which the burning portion follows the trcatcd portion.
in said tigurcsf l designates as a whole thcbody of the cigar. 2 a scrics of circumfcrcntial stria portions. and ii that portion of the burning part of thc cigar which is following thc trcatcd stria.
in its broader sense thc invention is not coutiucd to an embodiment whcrciu thc articlc is treated with a but on thc contrary the invcntion may be embodied in a varicty of different. forms.
