In the embodiment disclosed, a pneumatic hammer 5-'is shown. insofar' as the invention is concerned, said hammer may be of any suitable or desirable construc tion. The means for feeding this hammer or motor to its Work consists of a cylinder member 6 inywhich is slidably mounted a piston member, comprising a piston rod 7 carrying'a piston that is designated as a whole the present invention is to the rear side oi the piston S.- The piston rod 7 is tubu-A lar, the passageway 7al constituting means for conducting the fluid under pressure from the rear portion of the v counterbore 11 in one side that is interiorly threaded toreceive thecylinder @,the opposite side being also counterbored, as shown '21h12, toreccive the stem 13 oi the motor. Consequently, the air or [luid under pressure admitted through the nipple 9 will have the entire area ofthe piston and piston rod to operate against in feeding the motor and associated parts to their work. li less pressure is desiredVhowever, it is only necessary to uncouple the cylinder (i from the nut 10, remove the piston from the cylinder, loosen the nut 17, and relatively rotatethe members l5 so as to bring one or more o the set's of openings into alineincnt. Consequently after the parts have been replaced, and air is admitted through the nipple 9, it will be apparent that the pressure on opposite sides of the. members 15 will be equalized, and the eiietive area will be substantially that oi' the' piston rod, so that the pressure upon the motor or hammer will be materially decreased. It thus will be apparent that simple means are provided, whereby the effective pressure area of 'the pistou can be varied to suit the diiierent-coinlitions of use. The structure, moreover,` can be varied considerably without depa'rting from the spirit of the invention. Thus one or more sets of openings maybe provided in the relatively 10`- tatableinembers 15, and these members may be considered one as the piston proper and the other as the means for controlling'the passage of air through such piston.
Probably the preferred form of structure is illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. The cylinder' member ther'ein disclosed comprises a cylinder' 20 having a head 2l, detachably secured to one end thereof and provided with a packing gland 22. In the cylinder member is `slidably mounted a piston member comprising a piston 23 havingr a tubular stem 24 that slidab] y passes through the gland 22 and is connected in any desired manner rrtlre motor, a portion of which is shown at 25. The motivo fluid is admit-ted to the'cylinder on one side of the piston through a nipple 26, and is conveyed through the passageway 27 in the piston and piston r'od to the motor 25. A lateral port 28, located inthe piston rod constitutes the means of communication between the passageway 27 and the interior oi the cylinder on the opposite side o the piston to the inlet .nipple 26. The walls of the port 28 are threaded. A vent 29 is formed in the wall of the Cylinder. 20, and is ot the same diameter as.tlre por't 28, tlr`e Walls of said vent being correspondingly threaded. A closure in the form of a screw plug 30 is arranged to be threaded either into the vent 29 or the port 28 for the purpose of closing either. With this construction if the full pressure oi the motive fluid is desired upon the motor, the plug 30 is placed in the port 28, thereby leaving the vent 29 open. On the other` hand, if it is desired to restrict the effective pressure area of the piston, the plug is removed from the port 28 and is placed in the vent 29. As a result, the pressure in the cylinder on the opposite side of the piston to that against which the motive thrid is admitted is cqualizcd, and
the pressure area is thereby materially restricted.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, isri 1. In feed nrechanism'of the class described-the combination with a motor, of means for feeding the same toits work, said means comprising a cylinder and a piston operating therein, means for conducting and admitting fluid under pressure to the cylinder on one side of the piston, and means, located within the cylinder', for' varying the effective pressure area of the piston acted -on by such motive duid. l

In feed mechanism of the `class described, the combination with a motor, of means for' feeding the same to its work, 4said means comprising a cylinder and a piston operating therein, means for conducting and admitting fluid under pressure to the cylinder at one side of the piston, and moans, located within the cylinder', for admitting said fluid under. pressure to the cylinder on the opposite side of the piston to vary the effective pressure area of the piston. r
3. In a feed mechanism of the class described, the combination with a motor, of means for feeding the same to its work, said means comprising a cylinder and a piston op. erating therein, means for conducting and admitting fluid under pressure to the cylinder at one side of the piston, and means, movable with the piston, for admitting the fluid under4 pressure to the cylinder on the opposite side of the piston from the fluid admitting means.
4. In feed mechanism of the class described, the combination with a motor, of means for feeding the same to its work, said means comprising a cylinder member and a piston member operating therein, means for' conducting and admitting Huid under pressure to the cylinder member on one side of the piston member', said piston member having a passageway for admitting the fluid under pressure to the cylinder member' on the opposite side of the piston member', and a device movable with the piston `memher' for controlling the passageway, said device being detachable from the piston 'member' to open the passageway.
5. In feed mechanism of th class described, the combination with a motor', of means for' supplying motive duid to the motor for holding said cylinder' to its Work, said means comprising a cylinder, a piston operating therein, a piston rod connected to the piston and having a longitudinal passageway therethrough communicating with the v motor, means for admitting fluidundel' pressure to the cylinder' on one side of the piston, said piston rod having a port communicating` with the cylinder on the opposite side of the piston to the iluid admitting means and com municating with the longitudinal passageway, and a clo-v sure for the port.
6. In feed mechanism of the class described, the eombination with a motor, of means for holding the same to its work, said means comprising a cylinder' member and a pistonmenrbcr operating therein, said cylinder' member' having a vent and the piston'member having a port, and a common device for closing either' the por't or vent.
7. In feed mechanism of the class described, the combination with a motor, of means for holding the same to its work, said means comprising a cylinder' member' having a vent in its wall, a piston member' operating in the cylinder and having a port communicating with the interior' thereof, and a common plug for closing either' the port or vent.
8. In feed mechanism of the class described, the combination with a cylinder' having a vent, of a piston operating in the cylinder, a piston r'od connected to the piston, said piston rod having a longitudinal passageway therethrough, and a lateral por't communicating with the passageway and the inter-lor of the cylinder, and'a screw plug adapted to be threaded into the port or vent.

In feed mechanism of the class described, the combination with-a cylinder-having a vent, of a piston member operating therein, said piston member having a piston and being provided with a passageway that communicates with the cylinder on opposite sides of the piston, and means for closing either the vent or passageway.
