SAMUEL D. BREAR, OF TAGOMA, WASHINGTON.
UPRIGHT STEAM-BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 190'?.
Application filed November 6, 1906. Serial llo. 342,211.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. BREAR, a citizen of the United States, residing atv the city of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upright Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains'to improvements of upright boilers used to generate steam for power and other purposes. It may more properly be termed an attachment to upright boilers since it is designed to be attached to and used on any upright boiler.
The objects of my invention are-first, to provide a down draft casing or shield around an upright boiler whereby the smoke of combustion is largely consumed and a saving of about fifty per cent. of fuel is secured. Second, to increase the capacity of an upright boiler and. thus save space required [or horizontal boilers or additional size of upright boilers, third, to protect the exterior of an upright boiler and thus prevent contraction and expansion caused by exposure to the cold air and thereby preserve the life of the boiler. This protection also prevents the accumulation of scale on the interior of the boiler shell, in addition to preventing the crystallization of the boiler material from sudden changes in temperature; and fourth, it not only generates steam more quickly and economically, but it so superheats the steam as to secure the highest power and efficiency.
I attain these objects by means of the attachment to upright boilers illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which-v Figure l is an upright boiler shown in elevation with my improvement attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a horizontal cross section of Fig. l on the line 2 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in each view.
In Fig. l, A is the iirebox and base of an ordinary forni of an upright or vertical steam boiler having the ash box or pit B below the same and the boiler body or shell above indicated by the broken line O in Fig. l and the circle C in section in Fig. 2. In Fig. 2 the small circles D indicate the flues extending from the rebox through the boiler and out the top oi same. The boiler, as commonly used, is capped with a cone shaped cover into which these `fiues open, and which terminates into a smoke stack.
My invention and improvement comprises a sheet metal cylindrical casing E entirely covering and inclosing the body of the boiler. This casing is closed at the bottom so as to fit closely around the boiler and is made with an extension F on one side from which the smoke stack G rises to a proper height to insure draft. It is to be observed that the casing is suiciently high and large to leave ample space at the top and sides of the boiler to allow a free movement of the smoke and products of combustion coming from the tubular fines D. These products of combustion are drawn downward around the boiler and into the smoke stack G and in their passage downward between the casing E and the boiler` shell C, the heat therefrom, and heretofore lost, is utilized in heating the exterior of the boiler and thus protecting it and adding to its capacity. By this simple casing attached to any upright boiler by means of brackets .I I attain the objects set forth and produce 'an improvement-to boilers of this type that is a positive benefit to the owner and user of the boiler.
It is to bo observed that my improvement is not limited to any size of upright boiler, and the same may be provided with a forced draft by means of the exhaust in the smoke stack as is commonly used with a direct smoke stack draft. The cover H on top of the casing is removable to give access to the tubular lues D for cleaning same. The usual attachments in the form of steam gage, cocks, valves, etc. not shown on the drawing aredesigned to be attached to the boiler and extend through the casing as ordinarily used. A
I am aware that, prior to my invention, upright boilers have been invented having an exterior down draft in their combination. I therefore do not claim such feature broadly, but
What I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with an upright boiler, of a casing for inciosing the same, said casing consisting' of a cylindrical shell of greater diameter and height than the boiler and provided at its lower end, at one side, with a lateral extension from the top of which rises a smoke nue; the cross area of said extension being larger than the area of said flue, said casingbeing closed at its bottom between the wall thereof and the wall of the boiler, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an upright boiler, of-a casing inclosing the same so as to leave a space around and at the top of the boiler, said casing consistingof a cylindrical shell having at its lower end, at one side, a lateral extension from the top of which extends a smoke ue, and brackets secured to the wall of the fire box upon .which said casing rests, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
