SPEED-CHANGING DEV ICE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN G. CALLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speed-Changing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the construction of a speed-changing mechanism to be used in connection with a rotating shaft.
Where devices such as electric motors are employed for the purpose of driving machinery, it is frequently desirable to use a speed-reducing connection between the device and the machine driven. This is particu' larly true with electric motors as they are advantageously operated at speeds considerably higher than it is desirable to operate the driven machine.
The speed-reducing-mechanism which I have hereinafter described and illustrated in detail, is simple and efficient, and when operated in connection with a chain or belt drive can be used as a chain or belttightener.
The various features of novelty which characterize my invention are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this specification. For a better understanding of my invention, however, reference may be had to the accompanying drawings and description in which I have illustrated and described one form in which my invention may be embodied.
Of the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an electric motor equipped with my speedchanging mechanism; Fig. 2 is a partial section through the motor taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; andFig. 4 is a diagrammatic view showing the speed-changing device and a shaft driven thereby through a belt.
In the drawings, 1 represents an electric motor of or dinary construction to the left hand face of the casing oi which is bolted a member 2. The member 2 is provided with a flange-like portion 3 through which bolts 4 pass into threaded apertures formed for the purpose in the casing of the motor 1 to secure the member 2 in position. The member 2 is also provided with a cylindrical portion Or boss 5. The boss 5 maybe chambered internally to receive the bearing for one end of the armature shaft 6 of the motor.

viewed in Fig. 2, a shaft or stud 13. The shaft or stud 13, which is centrally located with respect to the disk 8, has journaled upon it a member 14. The member 14 comprises a disk portion 15 and a cylindrical portion 16. The cylindrical portion 16 has gear-teeth 17 formed on its inner periphery.
The end or the'lnotor shaft 6 projects throughanaperture formed for the purpose in the disk portion 8 of the member 7 and carries at its end a spur-gear 18, the teeth 19 of which mesh with the teeth 17 of the member 14. The outer surface of the cylindrical portion 16 is recessed at 20 to receive the cylindrical portion of an annular guard'21 which is L-shaped in cross-section as clearly appears in Fig. 2. The radial portion of the guard member 21 serves to retain a dust guard 22 in an annular recess formed for the purpose in the member 7.. The dust guard 22 may be formed out of fibrous material or the like. It will be observed that the members 7 and 14 unite to form a chamber or casing which protects and iucloscs the gear-wheel 18 and cooperating gear-teeth 17. I
The outer surface of the portion 16 of the member 14 is convex slightly to form a. pulley surface by which a band driving member in the form of a. belt may be driven. A sprocket wheel 23 may be keyed on the hub of the member 14, as shown, which maydrive a V tially between and in line with the shaft 6 and the shaft 25. By adjusting the member 7 about the boss 5 this relation can be obtained with various positions of the motor and shaft 25. Moreover by slightly shifting the member 7 about the boss 5 the stud 13 may be moved to varying distances from the shaft 25, thus affording a means for varying the tension on the belt.
It will be understood that a belt may be driven from the periphery of the cylindrical portion of the member 14 or a shaft may be driven by the sprocket wheel 23, or both drives may be employed at once. Instead of forming the teeth 17 directly on the inner periphery of the cylindrical portion 16 a ring having teeth formed ,on its inner periphery may be removably secured within hub of the wheel 14. The outer periphery of the cylindrical portion of the member 14 may be provided with sprocket teeth if desired.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-
1. In combination, a shaft, a support, a member secured to said support and angularly adjustable with respect thereto about said shaft as a center, a rotating member carried by the first mentioned member and eccentricaiiy mounted with, respect to said shaft, and a speed-changing driving connection between said shaft and said member;
2. In combination, a shaft, 9. support, a member secured to said support and angularly adjustable with respect thereto about an axis which coincides with the axis of said shaft, a rotating power-transmitting member carriedby the first mentioned member and eccentrically mounted with respect to said shaft, and a driving connection between said shaft and said rotating member.
3. In combination, an armature shaft, a casing having a boss or stud formed on it, a gear on said shaft, a secondshaft out of line with the first mentioned shaft supported by said boss and angularly adjustable with respect thereto, and a gear wheel carried by said second shaft and meshing with the gear on the armature shaft.

In combination, an armature shaft, a casing, said casing having a boss or stud formed on it concentric to said shaft, 9. gear on said shaft, a second shaft out of line with the first mentioned shaft carried by the boss and angularlyadjustable with respect theretofa gear wheel carried by said second shaft meshing with the gear on the armature shaft, said gear wheel being formed with a cylindrical portion having gear teeth on its'inner surface.
5. In combination, an armature shaft,--a casing provided with a boss or stud concentric to said shaft, a gear on said shaft, :1 second-shaft supported by, but angularly adjustable with respect to said boss, said second shaft being out soaoss of line with the ilrst mentioned shaft, and a gear wheel carried by said second shaft and formed with a cylindrical portion having gear teeth on its inner surface, said gear I teeth meshing with the teeth on the gear carried by the armature shaft, the outer periphery of said cylindrical portion being arranged to drive a band.
6. In combination, an armature shaft, a casing, said casing having a boss concentric with the armature shaft, a gear on the armature shaft, 0. member clamped on said boss but adjustable with respect thereto, a gear wheel journaled on said member, said gear wheel being formed with a web portion and with a cylindrical portion having teeth formed on its inner surface which mesh with the teeth of the gear on the armature shaft, said member and said gear wheel being shaped to form a casing within which the gear on the armature shaft is inclosed. 7. In combination, a shaft, a support, a member arranged to be rigidly secured to said support in different angular relations with respect to an axis which coincides with the axis of said shaft, a rotatable power-transmitting member carried by the first-mentioned member and eccentrically mounted with respect to said shaft, and gearing between said shaft and said rotatable member.
8. In combination, a shaft, a support, a member arranged to be rigidly secured to said support in diiferent angular positions with respect to an axis which coincides with the axis of said shaft, is rotatable powem-transmittingmember carried by the first-mentioned member and eccentrically mounted with respect to said shaft, and a speed-re- JOHN G.
