The member 44 is prferably made of sheet metal by bending up a blank of the onn shown in Fig. 7. Said, blank is bent along the i 4 0 line a of said Fig. 7, so thatrthe flat side of the pw l 17 'engages .the periphery of the wheel 23 and the fiat {ace oi the curved arm 48 is in position to engage the front face of :said wheel 23 and thus prevent motion of the memher44 toward the back of the machine.

When the key 29 is depressed, the arm 42 is elevated and the pawl 47 is moved into the notch 28 and operates tlie wheel 2.3 turning it clockwise [rom the front, a distance ol .one hoteli or far enough to cause each oi the pawls 21 to dmp behind the next suceeding tooth in the ratche't 85 wheel 20 which is rigid with the escapement wheel-10.
This movement of the 'parts effects a hack spacig movement-of the cirriage e. letter space distance and a back space of the carriage for a letter space distance is etfectezl at each (lepression of the key 29. lt will be understood that in themacline here shown said escapement wheel is hcld against backword rotation by the usual feed dogs. and that in machines in which the feed dogs are adapted to permit backword rotation of the escapement wheel, said escapcment wheel may be rigidly inounted on the shutt 17, and the mtchet 20 and pawls 21 may be dispensed with, if desired, so far as certain features of ry invention are concerned. As the member 44 rises upon the depression of the kcy 29 it is guided in its motion by the engagement ni the pawl 47 with the wheel 23 on the one hand and by the eng-agement of the curved guide arm 48 with the housing 18 on the other, sot-hat said pawl is free to follow the nmtionof the wheel but cannot come out of cngagement with said wheel. The lower part of the right-hand side of the guide arn 48 is orncd with a curvo 52 somcwhat sharper than the other parts of the eurve of said arm and at the moment when the pawl 47 reaches the highest. point in its strok thi sharpcr curve 52 engagcs the righthand side of the 'housing 18 below the vertical center of said housing and arrests the motion of the pawl. At the same time, the member 44 is jamned, the curv c 52 tending topull the pawl 47 forcihly into the notcl 28 in the wheel 23 with the result that said wl ccl is positively arrested in its motion and any ovcrthnw of the wheel and of the carriage beyond the single lct ter space distance is thus pnsitively prevented. When the kcy 29 is released the member 44 drops downwrd, such downward motion moving the 'curved portion 52 o the mitting the pawl 47 to slip out oi the notch 28 and to return to normal position beneath the next succecding notch 28.
The shaft 39 is provided with a returning spring 53 '(Fig. 2). One end of said shalt projects through and beyond one o( the brackets 40 and the spring 53 is coiled about this projectirg end of the shat. One end of said spring is inserted in a hole in the bracket 40 and the other end is secured in the same or in any suitable manner to a collar 54 which surronnds said shaft and which is formed on its outer end with a slut 55 for thc insertion of a tool similar to a screwdn'ver. The collar 54 is adaptcdto be Secured in position on the shaft 39 by a -set screw The tension of the spring 53 may be regulated by loosening the set screw 56 and turning the co`llar 54 by meanof the tool reicrred to until the desired tension of the spring 53 has been produced, and then again tightening the screw 56.
It will be perceived that whenet'er it is desired to back step; the carriage, the key 29 may he depressed until it is arrested by the jammingof the curved portion 52 of the arm 48 engaging the housing 18 with the result that the wheel 23, shait 17 and piion 16 will be tumcd toward the right a suitable distance to step the carriage hack one letter space distance. This operation may obviously he rcpeatcd as often s dcsired and the key may be struck sharply andiquickly as the means described positively prevent tiny overthrow of the parts. It will also be pcrce-ved that us the pawl 47 is normally out of engagement with the-wheel 23, the carriage may bo moved ireely in either direction without it being ar`m 48 outof engagement with the housing 18 and pcr- A interfered with by the back spacing mechanism. It will als be pereeived that. the rock shah, 39, being mounted in the lugs or brackets depending' from the top plate, is the only part of the back spncing medianisn that is Secured to the framework of the machine above the base portion of said framework and that this is ecured in such a position that it is itselireadily detachahle without interiering with other parte of the 'mechanism and its position is such that it does not interfere with the assembling of the other paris of the mechanism nor their removl .in case of need.
