To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro ScnIMANsKY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Assembling Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to barrel assembling machines and is particularly designed to facilitate and expedite the operations of wiudlassing and heading barrels. To this end, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the machine; Fi 2 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the machine; Fig. 3 is across section; Fig. 4 is an elevation of the head-feeding mechanism; and Fig. 5 is a section through the windlassing mechanism.
Generally described, my improved machine comprises windlassing mechanism, a holder for a series of assembled barrel head sections and means whereby the head sections are successively transferred from the pile and engaged with the barrel while the latter is still in engagement with the windlassing mechanism.
As preferably constructed, A is a frame provided with a top plate or table B which is centrally cut away at C to form a well in which the receptacle for the assembled barrel head sections is arranged. The windlassing mechanism is mounted upon this frame and comprises the usual rope or cable D having sufficient slack to form a loop D therein, which is placed about the barrel staves while in engagement with the settingup frame. The setting-up frame may be of any suitable co'nstruction (not shown) and is arranged to hold the barrel in a position in front of the frame A indicated by the dotted lines. The opposite ends of the cable D, after first passing about suitable guide sheaves E, E upon the frame, extend rearward at opposite ends of the frame and are attached to rock arms F. These rock arms are mounted upon a rock shaft G which is jonrnaled in bearings at the rear of the frame and near the top thereof.
G is a ratchet wheel upon the shaft G, and H is a rock arm pivoted upon the shaft and carrying a pawl H for engagement with said ratchet wheel.
H is a link connecting the rock arm H with a foot lever H by which the pawl may be reciprocated to wind up the ratchet wheel and the upper end of the link is preferably provided with a lug o 'for automatically disengaging the pawl when the foot lever is in its raised position I is a dog for holding the ratchet wheel from reverse movement and I is a handle for disengaging said dog which is pivotally secured to the frame in a position for convenient operation from the front thereof, this handle being connected to the dog by the connection 12.
The parts just described are adapted in operation to tighten the loop D in the cable when placed about the staves of a barrel. This is accomplished by the operator who takes his stand in front of the frame'beside the barrel and after engaging the loop with the stave thereof, reciprocates the lever H with his foot. This will wind up the ratchet wheel, rotating the shaft G and turningthe rock arms F so as to draw upon the cable and tighten the loop. In order to place and exert a greater power upon the cable during the final movement of tightening the loop, the arms F are provided with enlarged hubs F against which the cable will contact after a partial rotation of the shaft G. These hubs being of lesser radius than the length of the arms F, will draw upon the cable with greater poweix As has been stated, the holder for the barrel heads is located in the cut-away portion G of the table. This holder comprises a series of vertically-extending guides J which are secured to radially-extending shanks J, the latter being slotted and detachably secured to the table B by the clamping bolts I. These arms are spaced about the aperture C and together constitute a cylindrical cage which may be adjusted by a radial movement of the slotted arms J so as to alter its diameterto fit different sizes of barrel heads. The barrel heads, which are formed of sections in the usual way, are arranged in bundles or piles of assembled sections and are placed in the cage formed by the guides J. The lower end of the pile rests upon an adjustable bottom board or follower K which is supported by an arm K secured to a vertically-movable rod K This rod is provided with a rack face I) which is engaged by a reciprocatory pawl L secured to a lever L which is actuated by a foot lever L L is a spring for raising the foot lever L and M is dogfor engaging the rack b to hold it in different positions of adjustment. Thus by reciprocating the lever L the follower K may be fed upward within the cage. The arm K is preferably guided in its movement by a tubular guide rod N within which is a piston N connected by a rod N and yoke N with the rod K and constituting a dash pot which retards the downward movement of the arm K and follower K when released by the pawl L and dog M.
The assembled barrel head sections are successively transferred from the pile within the holder to the barrel, while the latter is still in engagement with the windlassing mechanism by a transfer mechanism of the following construction:
0 is an arm which is secured to the vertical shaft 0 journaled in bearings near the front of the table B. This arm carries a head P which is provided with devices for engaging and holding the barrel head sections,
preferably depending spurs P. To permit of registering the head P with barrel head sections of different diameters, said head P is adjustably secured to the arm 0, preferably by slotting the latter and providing a block P having a notched lower face engaging notches in the arm 0. Through the block P, a bolt P is passed which is secured to the head P and projects above the block P having a spring P sleeved thereon. The purpose of this construction is to permit a limited angular movement or rocking of the head P so as to adjust it to bear with equal pressure upon all of the sections of the barrel head and also to permit it to be self-adjusting to the barrel, as will be hereinafter explained. The shaft 0 projects below the tableand has formed thereon a rack face c which is engaged by a segmental gear R upon a rock shaft R which is journaled in bearings on the frame and is provided with an operating handle R The construction is such that by rocking the handle R the shaft 0 may be drawn downward against the tension of a spring Q and this will cause the lowering of the arm 0 and head P so as to press the spurs P into the several barrel head sections constituting the top of the pile. Upon releasing the handle R the spring Q will raise the arm and head P, carrying with the latter the engaged barrel head sections. The arm 0 is revolubly secured to the shaft 0 and thus is free to be swung so as to carry the head P and barrel head sections attached thereto into registration with the upper end of the barrel which is engaged by the loop D The head P is also provided with radially-extending guides or steps S which project over the upper edge of the barrel at a plurality of points and serve to limit the downward movement of the head P. This downward movement is effected by again operating the handle R which, through the rack R, draws down the shaft 0 and the arm 0, while the stops or guides S limit the movement so as to bring the edges of the barrel head sections in registration with the croze of the barrel. The operator may then by a final depression of the foot lever H tighten the barrel slaves about the head sections, after which areverse movement of the handle R will disengage the spurs P from said head sections and free the head P and arm 0 'to be again turned into registration with the pile of heads. leasing the tension on the loop D, so that the lattei may be removed from the barrel.
The operation above described may be repeated and after each successive operation, the operator, by pressing upon the foot lever L feeds upward the pile of bar rel head sections within the cage, so as to maintain a substantially constant level at the top of the pile. When all of the heads in the pile are exhausted, a new pile of heads is placed upon the follower and by releasing the dog M, the follower K is permitted to drop down, being retarded in this movement by the dash pot N. Thus a single operator can rapidly perform all of the operations of windlassing and heading the barrel without assistance from oth er workm en or helpers.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a barrel assembling machine. the combination with a receptacle for a series of assembled barrel head sections. a laterally swingillg, arm movable from said receptacle to :1 position in registration with the barrel. :1 head proi'ided with means for engaging the barrel head sections secured to said arm with a limited universal pivotal movement, means for vertically lllOVlll" said arm and head for engaging and disengaging the barrel l ead sections. and guides projecting radially from said head for on ging the barrel at a plurality of points and unstitnting stops for limiting the downward movement of the parts. whereby the head sections are registered with the croze of the barrel.
2. In a machine for assembling barrels, the combination with :1 laterally 'winging transfer arm, of a receptacle for a vertical series of assembled barrel head sections pe ripherallv engaging the same, a head carried by said trans fer arm having means for engaging the barrel head sections. means whereby the diameter of said receptacle may be enlarged or contracted. and means for adjusting said head upon the transfer arm into axial aliuement with said receptacle.
2;. In a machine for assembling barrels. the combination with :1 frame. of guides for surrounding a vertical series oi assembled barrel heads secured to said frame. a bottom board or follower within said guides. an arm supporting said bottom plate. a rack bar secured to said arm and vertically sllduble on said frame. a foot-actunted pawl for engaging said ra k bar and feeding said arm and bottom plate upward. a holding dog for said rack bar, and a dash pot for retarding the downward movement of said rack arm and bottom plate when released by said dog.
