FOSTER MILLIKEN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ATTACHMENT FOR ROLLING-MILLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed March 21, 1907. Serial No. 363,583.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FOSTER MILLIKEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Attachment for Rolling-Hills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has reference to improvements in attachments for rolling mills, being especially directed to improvements in theconveyer table therefor. v This table may be either fixed or pivotally mounted, the latter' being ordinarily known as a tilting table, which is used in connection with rolls more than two high.
In passing structural or other forms of iron to the pass of the rolls from the conveyer table, it not infrequently happens that it becomes stuck between the guide-blocks or that the table is elevated at such an angle that the frictional contact of the conveying rollers is insufficient to carry the metal forward.
The purpose of this invention is to overcome this difficulty by utilizing the power driving the rollers of the conveyer table to positively force the metal into the pass of the rolls or withdraw the same therefrom. This I preferably accomplish by extending a bearing of one of the conveyer rollers to the outside of the table and attach thereto a drum of the nigger-head type. A line is passed from this drum to the iron being rolled when the-frictional drive of the rollers fails to move it, the line operating to positively pull or push the iron in the desired direction as it winds on the drum.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan of a rolling mill with one form of my improvement applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the saine.
Referring to the drawing, l, l indicates the rolls of the mill through which the metal is passed to bring the same to the desired shape. The pass between these rolls, which is of various forms,v is fed by a conveyer table 2, which comprises side frames 3 having a train of rollers made up of rollers 4 journaled therebetween. These rollers are each provided with a gear 5, which intermesh with adjacent idle gears (i intermediatelyv arranged and acting to positively drive all of the rollers n in the same direction when any one of them is rotated.
One of the rollers 4 near the center of the table has the bearing thereof extended beyond the frame 3, to which is attached a drum 7 of the nigger-head type. When the frictional contact of the rollers is insuflicient to deliver the bar of metal, as shown in Fig. l, to the pass of the rolls, which is often caused by the sticking of the bar between guide-blocks 8 carried by the table, a line 9 is passed from the drum to either the forward or rearward portion of the bar, which acts to withdraw or force the bar to the rolls according to the point of application of the line, as the same is wound about thedrum 7.
In order that the pull on the bar may be in the direction of its longitudinal axis for withdrawing it from the rolls, a pulley-block or sheave I is attached in any suitable manner forward of the drum and at the opposite side of the table, and the line 9 made in the form of a loopwith one strand or member thereof passed over the sheave, the ends of the line being connected up with grappling-tongs ll in a well known manner, as indicated in Fig. l. By this construction, as the line 9 is'drawn taut the tongs bite into the bar and assist the rollers of the table in withdrawing it from the rolls as the line is wound about the drum.
If desired to push the bar to the roll, if it is of suficicient length, the tongs are reversed from the position shown in Fig. I and applied to its outer end at the opposite side of the drum.
The conveyer table, although shown stationarily supported, may be pivotally mounted, in which case it is known as a tilting table and is used in feeding and receiving the metal as it is rolled to and from rolls more than two high. The invention is especially useful in connection with this form of table, as in delivering the metal between the top pass of the rolls, the table and metal are at an inclination, necessitating the driving of the metal uphill to carry it to the rolling pass.
The invention is obviously susceptible of numerous modifications falling within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A rolling mill, comprising a conveyer table having a train of driven rollers, one of' which is extended beyond the table, a drum fixed to said extended roller, and means for connecting the drum to the material to be rolled carried by the table.
2. A rolling mill, comprisingl a conveyer table having a train of driven rollers, a nigger-head fixed to one of said rollers, and a line adapted to be passed from the niggerhead to the material to be rolled.
3. A rolling mill, comprising rolls having a conveyer table with a train of driven rollers for frictionally driving the metal to the pass of said rolls, and a winding drum fixed to one of said rollers, for the purpose described.
4. A rolling mill, comprising rolls having a conveyor table with a train of driven rollers for frictionally drivingl the metal to the pass of said rolls, one of said rollers being extended beyond the table, and a nigger-head xed to the extended portion of said roller, for the purpose described.
5. A rolling mill, comprising s conveyer table having a train of driven rollersy :L drum driven from one of said rollers at one side of the table, u she-ave fixed at the opposite side of the table, und a line adapted to be passed about said sheave nnd attached to said drum, for the purpose describe-d.
G. A rolling mill, comprising a eonveyer table having :L train of driven rollers, one 0f which is extended beyond the table, a nigger-Ahead fixed to the extended portion 0f said roller, n shenve fixed at the opposite side of the table,
grappling tongs, and a line passing from said nigger-head 1 directly to said tongs and from seid nigger-head to said tongs over smid sheave.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
