PUMP FOR DISPENSING: C
No. senesi.
xpplieatiou xilecl November 12,1908. Serial. ilo. BIL
To all whom it may concern: A Beit known that l, HORACE S. GORDON, a citizen o the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State o Ohio, have invented certain new,V and useful Improvements in Pumps for Dispensing Oil; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures o reference .marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. y
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in oil-dispensing pumps, and the improvements relate to means 'for registering and indicating the specific quantities and the total quantity ot' oil dispensed.
The object oi the invention is to provide simple and efficient means in connection with registering and indieating devices, whereby the operations or rather the quantities of oil dispensed during the operations, are registered and indicated at points adjacent to the ,m
.operating shaft of the pump.
'The essential features ci the invention will he here- .inat'er described in the specification and specifically pointed out in the annexed claims.
Preceding a detailed description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of
' which- Figure 1, is a iront elevation of the entire apparatus, parte of the casing being broken away to show the pump -mechanism proper. Fig. 2, is a detail sectional view `of the indicating dial.. Fig. 5, is a view of the outer side of the actuating disk shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6, a
sectional view on the line y-y 0i Fig. l. Fig. 7, is a sectional view on the line o o of Fig. 1. Fig. 8, is a top plan view of Fig. 7. Fig. 9, is a detail view of the flange which interlocks with the hub oi the crank handle. Fig. l0, is a side elevation of the upper portion oi the pump.`
In a detail description of the invention, similar reierencelcharacters indicate corresponding parts.
The frame-work and pump mechanism are not comprised in the invention and will he only incidental mentioned. The frame work l comprises a stand which incloses the pump cylinder 5 and the coperating mechanism all of which is locatedbelowthe upper frame-work 2 and/nmuntedupon said lower framej rrorltV l. The crank shaft 4 is mounted in hearings 3 and 7 on the upper end oi the frame 3; fast upon said Acrank shaft 4 is a crank wheel 8 which is coupled to a Specication of Letters The detail register consists el a movable dial 11 uated with the proper numerals and index marks to indicate the specific Quantities el' oil dispensed in gallons and multiples thereol: this detail register comprises in connection with the dial 11, a disk l2, the order side of which is provided with rutchcts 13 adapted to engage with ratchets the inner face of the dial l1 to impart movement to said dial when the pump :s l ng operated. It will he understood that the ratchets .r-i engage the ratchets 13 when the disk l2 is being operated from the crank shalt, and that the said. ratchets 14: ride freely over the ratchets 13 when the dia-l 1l is turned to zero and is thus given movement independently oi the disk 12. The dial l1 and disk 12 are loosely mounted upon shaft 14 which is rigidly attached to an arm 15 extending at right angles from the frame 3. On the outer end of the shaft le in the iront o the dia-l l1 there is a stationary pointer 16 to which the dial moved 4the operations oi 'the pump and when a predetermined amount of oil has been discharged from said pum J, ater which the said dial set to zero as shown m Fig. 1.
Suitable contact is maintained between 'the ` ritchets 14 and 13 hy means or' a spiral spring i8 inclosed hetween the pointer le and the outer face of the dial. The rea-r iace oi is provided with a concentric row of pins 17 wluch are engaged by a worm 19 on crank shaft, said worm being ixed thereon. lt will be seen that movement is imparted in this manner to the disk 12 and thence to the dial l1 through the ratchets, the operation ol the detail er takes place as before' stated, upon each operation of the pump. A complete rotation ol the crank shaft discharges a specific quantity of oil, for gallon, and such quantity will he indicated upon the dial l1 at the pointer 1d, .Any movement oi the crankshaft will dispense and indicate quanti les less than gallons; the index marks between thc gallon marks on the dial, indicating quarts as said dial is graduated in the present instance. l total counter 20 oi well known construction r n"so provided the crank shalt lor registering thc enti g contents oi the pump or the entire cpianiitj,Y oi oil dispensed from the pump for any given length oi time; this total .register is mounted upon the hearing 7 of the ironie 3 and is connected with the crank shaft i through chain wheels 21 and 22, one o which is last on the tr k snuit, und
shaft et' the counter-seeFigs 'i and d, s 4vwheels being 'connected by a chain 2S theol the movement is imparted from the crank f counter shalt. The connections hetwc n .u nul) 255 of the crank handle, and the l t to the 'cr-ani' t t roi which the latter` is rotated, as follows: 'The h turns loosely on the shaft im til it is engaged v. 3l disk 28, which engagement is effected through m vola spring-pressed dog seated in an .mg in the imple, one I 'ffii hub 26. rThe adjacent face of the disk 28 is provided with recess ionning u shoulder 3021i', one end thereof with which-the dog 29 engages when the crank handle is rotated in its operative direction-,end when said crank handle is -rotated in the reverse direction, the dog 29 rides freely over` the surface of the disk 28. Thel disk 28 has a hub 3l which is fixedto the crank shaft 4. Upon 2L' l complete rotation -of said disk and shaft, a signal is given indicating :i complete revolution of the crank shaft, said signal. being due to the olickoi :i springpressed p1unger=25 moving into'Ieng;gement with 'a tapered recess 24 in the outer end of the shaft bearing 7. The spring-pressed plunger 25 is located in an opening in the hub 31, :ind one side oi the notchs24 is tapered to match the end oi' the plunger 25 so as to perrnit 'said plunger to ride out oi the`notch When'the crank shaft is rotated in the operations oi the pump. It'
v will thus be seen that lany reverse movement; of the '#crauk handle 27l Willv not effect the'shait 4 owing to the dog `29uriding freely over the face of the disk 28 during auch movement.
' ,l claim: y v .l 1. Inn pumpfor dispensing oil, a crank shaft-havingr a.. wormgear'thereon, 9.-. dial vn'fionnted.upon an inclinzition in the front of said wormgear; said dial having on its reali-ward side a series ofspaced ratchts, a disk mounted of ratchets,l :1 disk mounted in the rear of and parallel with y two witnesses.
in the rear of and parallel with the dial` and rotatableA c1-ank shaft' havlng :i worm gear thereon, a detail indicating dial te denote the specific quantities of oil dispensed, saiddiai having upon its rearward side a series said diari, said disk h'uvingon its ou'ter side a series of ratcliets engaging the ratchets on the dial, and upon its rearwardside a series of pins engaging the Worm on the crankshaft, a xed pointer infront of the' dial, and n' total eoun'tercon'neeted Withvthe crank-shaft and adapted to record the`total of the oil dispensed from -the pump and .indicated on theldlal in specific quantities, substanjtiuily as. set forth.
