To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY Amer-rouse WInMnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 32 and 34 Jlerkenwell road, in the city and county of London, England, have invented a new and useful Inter changeableUmbrella-Handle, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to interclnngeable handles for umbrellas, sunshades, sticks and like articles.

It is found that there is a growing demand for a handle which can be changed with facility from one umbrella or sunshade to another. Very expensive handles are now fitted to umbrellas and ladies often desire to change such a handle from an umbrella to a sunshade or to change one handle for another handle which will suit the special costume they may be wearing.

My invention is designed to provide an interchange able fastening between the handle and the shaft of an umbrella or the like adapted to securely hold the han dle to said shaft while when desired allowing said shaft to be immediately and conveniently released.

My invention is more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 shows an exterior view of my interchangeable fastening. l ig. 2 shows a sectional view of the shaft locked in position to the handle. Fig. 3 shows a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows a detail view of the locking ring. Fig. 5 shows the shaft of an umbrella or the like with a plan view of the locking and guiding wards and projections, and Fig. 6 shows a side view of Fig. 5.

Referring now to the drawings I arrange inthe handle of an umbrella, stick or the like a metal tube 2 and in a suitable position around said tube I arrange a spiral spring 3 provided with a spring arm 4 projecting through a lateral slot 14 into the interior of said tube and adapted to bear against a projection 5 arranged on a collar (5 (see Fig 4) which is pressed over said tube 2 and adapted to have a slight lateral movement. On said spring controlled collar I arrange an operating button 7. 4

The operation of my invention is as follows: The shaft 8 is first pressed into the receiving tube 2 of the handle .1 its end bearing against and compressing a spiral spring Ill arranged at the end of said tube. The

The ward 9 is curvedin such a manner that during the operation of pushing it up against the shoulder 13 (shown in Fig. 2) it forms a wedge and pushes back the projection 5 on the locking ring 6 under the control of the spring 4, the outer end of said projection being curved in the opposite direction to the inner end of the ward 9, as shown in Fig. 2. When said ward 9 has been pushed past the projection 5 on the locking ring against the above mentioned shoulder 13, the spring 4 brings the said projection back into position between the said locking ward 9 and the guiding ward 10 on the shaft 8 thereby locking said shaft securely to the handle. In order to release said shaft from the handle it is only necessary to press against the operating button 7 on the locking ring 6 in such a direction as to turn said ring so as to move its projection 5 against the influence of the spring 1 into the slot 14 and to such a position as to allow a clear passage through said guiding slots 12 for the locking Wards 9 on the shaft 8. The spiral spring 11 bearing against the end of said shaft 8 will then expel it from the handle.

It will be obvious that with the above described arrangement it will be a simple matter at will to lock in position or remove the handle of an umbrella or the like while it will be possible for one handle to be interchangeably used with any number of shafts or for one shaft to be used with any number of handles.

What I claim is 1. In an interchangeable fastening for the handles and shafts of umbrellas, sunshades, sticks and like articles, the combination of a handle having a receiving socket, a shaft adapted to be inserted in said receiving socket, suitably shaped guiding and locking wards mounted near the end of said shaft and adapted to move in slots formed in the sides of the receiving socket while preventing the lateral movement of the shaft, a locking ring mounted on said handle provided with a projection adapted to be turned to engage said wards and lock said shaft to said handle.

2. In an interchangeable fastening for the handles and shafts of umbrellas, sunshades, sticks and like articles, the combination of a handle having a receiving socket, a shaft provided with combined guiding and locking wards adapted to be inserted in slots formed in said receiving socket, a locking ring mounted on said handle engaging the locking wards and adapted to have a circumferential movement thereon, locking projections on said ring, a spring controlling said locking ring.

In an interchangeable fastening for the handles and shafts of umbrellas, sunshades, sticks and like articles, the combination of a handle having a receiving socket, a shaft provided with combined guiding and locking means adapted to be inserted in slots in said receiving socket, a locking ring mounted on said handle engaging the locking means and adapted to have a circumferential movement thereon, a spring controlling said locking ring, a suitably shaped projection mounted on said ring adapted to be pressed back by said shaft while being pushed into said receiving socket and to fall back into a position locking said shaft when said shaft has been pressed home in said receiving socket.

In an interchangeable fastening for the handles and shafts of umbrellas, sunshades, sticks and the like articles, the combination of a handle having a receiving socket, a shaft provided with combined guiding and locking wards adapted to be inserted in said receiving socket, a locking ring mounted on said handle adapted to have a circumferential movement thereon, a spring controlling said locking ring, a suitably shaped projection mounted on said ring adapted to be pressed back by and to engage with the locking wards on said shaft when said shaft has been pressed into the desired position in the receiving socket on said handle.

5. In an interchangeable fastening for the handles and shafts of umbrellas, sunshades, sticks and the like articles, the combination of a handle having a receiving socket, a shaft adapted to be inserted in said receiving socket, combined guiding and locking Wards mounted near the end of said shaft, slots formed in the sides of said receiving socket adapted to receive said guiding and locking Wards and to guide said shaft into a locking position in said socket, a locking ring mounted on said handle engaging the locking Wards and adapted to have a circumferential movement thereon, and a spiral spring controlling said locking ring.

6. In an interchangeable fastening for the handles and shafts of umbrellas, sunshades, sticks and the like articles, the combination of a handle having a receiving socket, a shaft adapted to be inserted in said receiving socket, a

spiral spring arranged at the inner end of the receiving socket adapted to expel the shaft when said shaft is un locked, combined guiding and locking wards mounted near the end of said shaft, slots formed in the sides of said receiving socket, adapted to receive said guiding and lockin: wards and to guide said shaft into a locking position in said socket, a locking ring mounted on said handle adapted to have a circumferential movement thereon, a spiral spring controlling said locking ring, a suitably shaped projection mounted on said ring adapted to be pressed back by and to engage with the locking Ward on said shaft when said shaft has been pressed into the desired position into the receiving socket on said handle.
