To all whom it may com-on:
Be it known that I, \N'ILLIAM Monun'rv, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Hoisting and Dropping Dani-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a lull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same My invention consists of an improved device lor hoisting and dropping lhe gates of dains and is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a side elevation showing the device in position for dropping lllll' gate. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of holding pawl and rack. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of lifting pawl. Fig. 4 bottom view of arm. Fig. 5 is an elevation of button with cross-section of the arm.

In the drawings A is the darn, B the gate, 1) a rack fixed perpendicularly upon the gate-frame, G is a standard upon the (.i()W l1-Sll{'itli1 side of the sluice-deck a, in which are journaled the hoisting-lever (Z with pawl D (preferably used with a spring d as shown in Fig. 3), and the holding-pawl ll, so placed and arranged as to engage with the rack, the holding-pawl E having its weight forward and so balanced as automatically to fall forward and engage the rack as the gate is raised. The rear end of the holding-pawl E is formed with a shoulder a: to receive the arm y of the lover (I when it is desired to drop the gate as hereinafter described and the spring (7/ is arranged to swivel upon its bearing and swing out of contact wi th the pawl D as shown in Fig. 1. Upon the under side of the shank of the lever d, I hang a swinging arm 1 which is preierably slotted to receive a lock bolt F, whereby it is secured to the lover (I when not in use and folded back out of the way.
The lever [Z is preferably journaled detachably in the standard so that it may be unshipped and carried from gate to gate and also, being inverted and then shipped in the standard and operated by lifting, may force the gate down when it will not drop of its own weight.
In operation the pawl D, being in position as shown in Fig. 3, and the arm 3/ folded as shown, the lever d is operated downward, the gate is hoisted and the pawl E follows in the rack and holds the distance gained.
When it is desired to drop the gate the spring (1 is swung round as shown in Fig. 1, the pawl D is turned back out of engagement with the rack, and the arm y is unlocked and allowed to fall into engagement with the shoulder :r of the holding-pawl E. The lever d is then operated downward and the arm y operating on the shoulder of the pawl E throws the pawl out of engagement with the rack and the gate drops. For the purpose of thus dropping the gate, any ordinary lever (without a hoisting pawl) may be used with the arm 3 If for any reason the gate will not drop oi its own weight, the hoisting lever (I may be unshipped and then inverted and shipped again and then when operated by lifting will force the gate down.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. ln-a device for hoisting and dropping the gates of dams, the combination of the darn; the sluice; the gate; a rack set perpendicularly upon the gate-frame; a standard upon the sluice-dock: a hoisting lever journaled in said standard and having a pawl adapted to engage said rack; a holding-pawl also journaled in said standard adapted automatically to engage said rack and having a shoulder at its rear end; and a rigid, removable arm between said shoulder and the hoisting lever.
2. In a device for hoisting and dropping the gates of dams, the combination of the darn; the sluice; the gate; a rack sot perpendicularly upon the gate-frame a standard upon the slnicodcck; a detachable, invertible hoisting lever journaled in said standard and having a pawl adapted to engage said rack; a holding-pawl also journalcd in said standard adapted automatically to engage said rack and having a shoulder at its rear end; and a rigid, removable arm between said shoulder and the hoisting lever.
