Appl d 5.121 filed November 27', 1906, Serial No. 345.330. Renewed July 23,1907. $erial No. 385,139.
the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My'invention relates to that class of lock cases which are provided with face plates adjustable relatively for different thicknesses of doors.
The object of the invention is to provide one or more filling pieces between the front plate of the lock and the adjacent side of the adjustable face plate so as to adapt the same for different thicknesses of doors.
This object I accomplish by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective of a lock case containing my improvement; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section; Fig. 3 is a perspective view with the filling pieces removed; Fig.
, 4 is a perspective of three filling pieces of different widths.
A designates a lock case adapted to be set into a recess cut through the edge of a door with its front plate a flush with the edge of the door. One side of the case is formed with a face plate A and its opposite side is formed with a vertical tongue a set just back of the front face of the front plate a. The inner side of the other face plate A is formed near its front edge with a vertical groove a adapted to receive the tongue a when the lock is applied to the door of the least thickness on which it is adapted to be used as shown in Fig. 3.
To adapt the casing for doors of different thicknesses 1 provide the filling pieces B, preferably three in numher though the number is immaterial. These pieces B, vary in width and fill out the space between the side of the lock case and the face plate A". The filling piece B is in the form of an angle plate with its inner flange I), provided with a slot 1), through which is passed a screw b which secures it to the lock case. The outer vertical edge of the front flange of the filling piece is provided with a tongue b which fits into the groove a in the face plate A as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The inner side of the filling piece B is provided with a vertical groove b which receives the tongue 0. on the lock casing and when the screw 1) is in place there is no chance for any shifting of the filling piece on the lock case, due to shrinkage of the door, shocks &c. The lock casing is thus adapted for stock doors of different thicknesses by simply attaching the proper size of filling piece B, which is a very simple way of accomplishing this desirable result.
What I claim is 1. A lock case or frame, provided at one side with an adjustable face plate and a filling piece secured removably to one side of the case fiush with its front plate and against which the adjacent side of the said adjustable face plate bears; whereby said filling piece may be removed and another of a different width applied.
2. A lock case or frame, provided at one side with an adjustable face plate, a filling piece secured removably to one side of the case fiush with its front plate, and tongue and groove connections between the edges of the filling piece and the casing and face plate.
3. A lock casing having relatively adjustable face plates and a plurality of filling pieces of different widths adapted to be individually secured between the side of the lock case proper and the adjustable face plate flush with the front plate of the case to adapt the lock casing to doors of different thicknesses.
4. A lock case or frame provided at one side with a removable filling; piece forming an extension of its front plate, a screw securing the filling piece to the casing, and a tongue and groove connection between said filling piece and casing.
5. A lock casing or frame, having a vertical tongue on its side just in rear of the front plate, an adjustable side plate having a groove in its inner face adapted to receive said tongue and a filling piece to form an extension of said front plate and having a groove to receive said tongue and a tongue to enter said face plate groove, where by when the filling; piece is removed the side of the face plate may be adjusted up flush with the adjacent side of the lock case or frame.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
