Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND BOL'Slth', F \YIENER NnUsTAnT, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY, EXECUTOR OF cIIRisTIAN ESSER, I) RUE OF NEW YORK, N. Y., TRUSTEES.
ASED; ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE' ASSIGN PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, AND ADOLIH LOIIWENTHAL MENTS, TO EDWARD P. METQALF, OF AND CLIFFORD E. DUNN,
PAPER 03 BOARD.
Original application filed December 20, 1905, Serial No. 292,661. Divided and Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 306,607.
- To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that CHRISTIAN Es'sEIr. deceased, in his lifetime a resident of Wiener Neustadt. Austria- Hungary, and a subject of the Emperor of Austria- Hung'ary, previous to his death had invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper or Board, of which I, Emrtmu Bousnk, aresident, of Wiener Neustadi."Austria-Hungary, and a subject of the Emperor ol' Ausiria-Hungary, as executor of the last 'will and testament of the said CHRISTIAN ESSER, present the following full, clear, and exact specification.
This application is a division of a former application filed by me December 20, 1905, Serial No. 292,661, for paper or board.
This invention relates to a process of forming paper or board and the like-from half-stuff containing peat fibers and the natural gelatinous matter of the peat.
The half-stuff containing peat fibers and the gelatinous mattcr of the peat may be produced in any desired manner, as theproduction thereof does not iorm part of the presentinvention. For instance, halfsiuff produced in the manner described and claimed in United States Patent No. 836,069, granted November 1.3, 1906, on an application of Christian Esse r, may be used, although the present invention is not to be confined to the use ofthe particular half-stuff of the above patent, but may be employed with half-stuff containing peat fibers and the natural gelatinous matter of the peat, howeverproduced.
The present process of producing paper or board and the like from half-stuff containing peat fibers and gelatinous matter is designed to utilize not only the. peat fibers, but also a large amount of the natural gelatinous matter of the peat, and in the finished product oi the process the fibers give strength and body to the product, while comparatively large quantitics of the gelatinous matter are present, adhering to the fibers and binding them together. I
In carrying out the process, the half-stuff containing the peat fibers and gelatinous matter is diluted with suflicient water or the like to float. it, and is passed-t0 the machine chest. Both the peatfihers and a comparatively large quantity of the natural gelatinous matter of the peat are then run into paper or board and the like.
If desired, the half-stuff containing the peat and natural gelatinous matter may have mixed thercwith a small percentage of sul lid or other hard stock.
The board produced according to the present process possesses the desirable qualities of strength and durability, and, in addition, is moth and vermin proof; furthermore, it is damp repellent, even if unsized, and is also a non-conductor of electricity, and an excellent insulating material. i
The foregoing-method of producing paper or board and the like from half-stuff containing peat fibers and the natural gelatinous matter of'the peat by floating the fibers'and gelatinous matter of the peat and then running both the fibers and the gelatinous matter into paper or hoard-and the like, may be varied widely providing the consideration of maintaining a comparas tivel I lar e uantit of clatinous matter in connection with the peat fibers'be kept in view.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A process of forming paper orboard and the like from half stuli' containing peat fibers and thenarural gelatinous matter of the peat. which process consists in floating thc intimately mixed fibers and gelatinous matter of the half stuff and then running said fibers and gelatinous matter into paper or board andthe like.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDMUND BOITSEK. I'JJPC/ltlil of the estate of Christian Essen. ("'(CtI-YCII. Witnesses Axnnus BLCCK, Auns'ro S. HOGUE'.
