To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED G. I'IOSTACHY, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glove-Stretching Implements; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an implement for stretching gloves.

The object'of the invention is to effect rapid and thorough stretching of all parts of a newly made glove, whereby to permit ready expansion of all of the seams to ascertain. whether or not they have been properly stitched, and if not to locate faulty work. I

With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a glove stretching implement, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts,Figure 1 is a view in elevation, partly in section, of a glove stretching implement constructed in accordance with the present invention, and showing the parts as they appear before being actuated to stretch the glove; Fig. 2 is a sectional, detail view of one of the finger members of the implement, exhibiting the operating parts thereof as they appear when the finger is being stretched; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, on an enlarged scale, through one of the finger members; and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of a portion of a slightly modified form of stretching member.

The implement embodies in its construction, a plurality of toggle bars 1, each of which carries series of toggle lovers 2 that are pivotally connected at their inner ends to collars 3 carried by each of the bars. The outer ends of the toggle levers are pivotally connected to blocks 4 that are secured to the inner faces of the stretching members 5, of which latter four are shown in this instance, it being understood that this number may be increased or diminished if found necessary or desirable. These stretching members may be made of any suitable material, such as wood or aluminium. When made of wood, their outer faces will be covered with some moisture impervious substance, such as celluloid. Secured to the series of toggle bars, at any desired point intermediate of their ends, and in any advantageous manner, are cross bars 6, with which are combined staudards 7 that carry quirk stretching members 8, these latter being made of any material that may be best suited for the purpose. One of the stretching members 9 of the fore finger is of sufficient length to have secured to it the toggle bar 10 of the thumb stretching member, and this member is constructed in all particulars like the finger members and operates in precisely the same manner.

While it will be generally preferred to have the implement provided with a thumb stretching member, it will be understood that this is not essential, as it may be omitted, and the stretching of the thumb of the glove be secured by a separate implement.

The lower ends of the toggle bars 1 are secured, in any preferred manner to a base or cross-bar 11 which when moved forward simultaneously moves the bars 1 causing the toggle levers connected therewith and the various fingers and thumb stretching members to expand equally and at the same time carries the crossbar 6 on which the quirk members 8 are secured forward causing said quirk members to engage the quirk seams. These quirk members 8 moving longitudinally and operating between the stretching members 5 of the opposite fingers stretch said quirk seams in unison with the finger seams.

The essential object of this invention is to provide an implement that will exert on all of the seams of the glove practically the same pressure as that exertedby the fingers and the hand when the glove is first tried on, and this result is effectively secured in the implement of the present invention by the employment of the toggle levers that operate to hold all the stretching members in substantial parallelism when expanded.

This glove stretching implement is designed to be used during the manufacture of gloves and will insure a systematic inspection of the sewing, will permit manufacturers and retailers to be more strict towards purchasers regarding the usual guarantee given with each pair of gloves, and will thus reduce the loss to a minimum to both the manufacturer and the retailer. This feature is of great importance and will be appreciated by the trade at large.

The implement will decrease the manufacturing cost of gloves in a slight degree, owing to the greater number of gloves that can be more thoroughly examined in a given time.

The stretcher, if made with a more ornamental exterior than the manufacturers implement in common use, will be very useful on all glove retail counters to stretch the gloves just before being tried on, especially with the ladies gloves which it is the practice to try on, and it will be highly appreciated by salespeople because of the saving of hand work and the much quicker and better stretching insured.

In the use of the implement, the fingers and thumb are fitted over the respective stretching members and the operator grasps the wrist portion of the glove, thus to hold it firmly in position, and upon the base being lifted, the toggle levers will be straightened out, or brought to a position approximately at right angles to the toggle bars 1, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby causing the members 5 to be expanded and stretch the fingers and thumb of the glove, thus exposing all of the seams holding the fourchettes assembled with the body of the glove. At the same time, the quirk members will exert a stretching action upon the quirks, thus permitting the seams thereof to be examined. The operator can now inspect each and every seam with facility and should there be slip stitches or breaks of any kind in the leather or thread used, this may be readily detected and the glove be returned to the operator for repair.

By the employment of the toggle bars and levers, together with the quirk stretching members, one implement can be used for stretching several different sizes of gloves, and each glove may be stretched to exactly the same degree. This latter feature is one of importance, in as much as with any of the methods heretofore practiced it has been practically impossible for the operator to exert the same pressure on any two gloves.

As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the stretching members 5 are solid, for implements used for factory purposes, but for implements used on the glove retail counters, the stretching members 12 may be made hollow, as shown in Fig. 4, with their outer surfaces perforated with any convenient number of orifices 13 and of any suitable size. The idea of this is to put glove powder inside of the stretching members through the top of each, so that when the machine is in use the powder will be distributed evenly over the entire inner surface of the lingers, thus dispensing with the use of a powder box handled by hand, as heretofore, before or after the glove is stretched, and making the implement a self-acting powder distributer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Pateut, is3-- 1. A glove stretcher embodying indeptmdent sectional finger members, independent means for expanding the members, and means connected with said expanding means for expanding said members in unison.

2. A glove stretcher embodying finger and thumb stretching members, and independent longitmlinally movable quirk stretching members.

3. A glove stretcher embodying finger, thumb and quirk stretching members and means for expanding all of the linger members and for moving the quirk members forward in unison.

4. A glove stretcher embodying laterally expansible lin' ger and thumb stretching members, aml longitudinally movable quirk stretching means.

5. A glove stretcher embodying linger and thumb stretching members, each comprising a plurality o1 sections. a toggle bar for each member, and a plurality of toggle levers connecting the toggle bars and the sections.

6. A glove stretcher embodying linger and thumb stretch ing members, each comprising a plurality of sections, a plurality of toggle bars, series of toggle levers couneetiug the bars and the sections, quirk stretching elements carried by the bars, and means for actuating the toggle bars.
