- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'RICHARD BARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ravine, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Sewing-Machine Locks and 1 do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in sewing machines, and more particularly to means whereby their driving wheels may be locked against movement when the machine is not in use. 1
The object of the invention is to provide a locking device of this character of simple, durable and comparatively inexpensive construction, which may be applied to sewing machines of any description, and which will be very efficient for the purpose intended.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view through a sewing machine, showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of a sewing machine top or table, showing the manner in which the locking lever is mounted therein; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view, taken on the plane indicated by the line 33 in Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the dog or pawl, its supporting bracket and its operating lever. Fig. 5 represents a detail of a portion of the wheel showing the transversely-spaced stops on the periphery thereof.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 denotes a sewing machine of any desired form and construction, which comprises a support or frame 2, a top or table 3, and a grooved drive wheel 4, about which passes a strap 5 for imparting motion to the shuttle driving shaft, said drive wheel 4 serving as a fly wheel or balance wheel, and being fixed upon the usual crank-shaft actuated by the treadle.
The present embodiment of my invention is in the form of an attachment for locking the drive wheel 4 against rotation, and it comprises a dog or pawl 6, a supporting bracket 7 for the same, an operating lever 8 for said dog, and a guide and keeper 9 for said lever. The bracket or support 7 is in the form of an angularlydisposed bar having its vertically-projecting, bent upper end 10 apertured to receive a bolt or the like 11, which secures it upon the frame 2. In order to prevent the bracket 7 from slipping, said end 10 is formed at its top with a stud 12 to enter a socket or recess in the frame 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The outwardly-bent, horizontal lower end of the bracket 7 is formed with an opening 13, through which the cord or belt 5 passes and in which it is guided.
In the central portion of the bracket 7 is formed a longitudinally-extending slot 14, in which is pivoted, upon the transverse bolt or the like 15, the outer end of the dog 6. This dog 6 is in the form of a metal bar, which has adjacent to one end in its sideedges at opposite points, angularly-disposed grooves or channels, which form a reduced portion or neck to enter the slot 14 in the bracket, and which also form stop- shoulders 16, 17, to limit the swinging movement of the dog. The latter has upon its inner end a downwardly-curved portion or jaw 18, which is adapted to engage transversely-alining notches as 19, formed in the lugs or projections as 20 upon the curved periphery of the drive wheel 4. The notched lugs 20 are formed to permit the belt to pass between them. The portion 18 of the dog is slightly broader than the width or thickness of the wheel 4, and it is swung toward and from the periphery of said wheel and into and outof said notches 19 by means of the operating lever 8. This lever is substantially right-angular in form, and has its lower end or arm projecting through the slot 14 in the bracket 7, engaged with the upper face of the dog 6 and secured thereto by means of a nut or the like 21, screwed upon its right-angularly bent threaded end 22, which is passed through an opening in said dog. The opposite end or arm 24 of the lever 8 projects upwardly and into the combined guide and keeper 9,which is embedded in the top or table 3, said arm 24 having upon its upper threaded end a milled knob or finger-piece 25, formed with a lower cylindrical hub portion or collar 26 carrying a set-screw 27 for retaining the same in an adjusted position upon the arm. The guide and keeper 9 comprises a rectangular box or casing 28, adapted to be inserted in a recess in the top or table 3 and retained therein by screws or the like passed through apertured flanges 30 formed upon its bottom at opposite sides.
The arm 24 of the lever projects through this box or casing 28, which is hollow, and also through a rectangular plate 31 secured by screws or the like 32 in a recess in the top of the table 3, so that it will lie flush with the upper surface of said table. Said plate 31 has in its center a rectangular opening to register with the opening in the box or casing 28. In the latter upon its opposite side walls and upon opposite sides of the hub'or collar portion 26 of the finger-knob 25, are secured flat springs 34, 35, which serve to frictionally hold the lever at either end of the box or casing, and hence the dog 6 in either its lowered position, when engaged with the wheel 4, or its elevated position when out of engagement with said wheel. Each of the springs 34, 35, has one of its ends seated in a vertical groove 36 formed in one of the end walls of the box or casing 28, and retained therein by a rivet or the like 37. The said spring bears against the opposite sides of the hub or sleeve portion 26 of the knob or finger-piece 25, which latter is so adjusted on the arm 24 of the lever 9, that its top does not project above the surface of the table 3.
The construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that when the knob 25 is moved to one end of the box or casing, the pawl will be swung downwardly to cause its end 18 to engage the notches 19 in the wheel 4 and thereby lock the latter against rotation, and that when said knob is swung to the opposite end of the box or casing 28, said pawl will be swung upwardly out of engagement with said wheel and will be supported by one of the springs, the other of said springs serving to hold the lever and retain the pawl in its lowered or locked position.
While the guide and keeper 9 may be located at any desired point upon the top or table 3, it is preferably so positioned that the removable box or cover upon the top of the machine will cover the same when in position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to with out departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
1. The combination with a rotary element provided with transversely spaced peripheral stops, 01' a swinging (log having a terminal to engage the stops, a lever for actuating the dog, a rigid guide for the lever, and springs in'the guide for holding the lever in adjusted positions.
2. A locking device comprising a bracket provided :11 one end with means for attachment to :1 support, and intermediate its ends with a slot, :1 dog having at one end a catch and having its other end diagonally-rabheted and pivoted within the slot, and a lever operatively connected with the dog.
