Bo it known that I, CHARLES H. SHEPARD, a citizen of he United Statcs, and a. resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kings and Statc of New York, have invented certain new and useful Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification. i
This invcntion relates to tabulating mechanisms for volition is to provide a tabulsting mechanism co1npris-' ing a few simple ports compactly arranged upon the top plate of a typowriting machine, and having at the forward part of the top plste convenient finger-piece for controlling both the den minatiomdetcrmining mcch' anism and thc carriage releasing deviccs.

My invention consists in certain combinations of dc vices, features of construction and arrangements of partsnll as will be fully hereinafter set forth and par ticularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side olevation, partly in scction, of a Remington No. 6 typewriting machine, showing my improvements applied therzto, Fig. 2 is a plan of the upper portion of the machine. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of the tabuleting mechanism, the parts being shown in normal position. The tabulating mechanism comprises a hack 3?, arranged at the front of the top plate, a pinion 38 in mesh with said rack, a rcarwnrdly extending shaft 39 upon which said pinion is fixed, above] pinion 49 secured upon the rear 0nd of said shalt, a hovel gear or scgmcnt 41 in mesh with said bcvcl pinion, a can; plate 42 fixed to said hcvcl gear, a (lcnomination stop 43 controlled by said cam plate, and a. column locating step 44 a1'- ranged upon the truck or carriage.
