Description

No. 865,621. v I PATBNTED SEPT. 10, 1907.
B. A. WADSWORTH.
SAW GUIDEL.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 17, 1906.
WITNESSES pieces, in which a saw is adapted to work.
BALYS A. WADSWORTH, OF HALE, OREGON.
SAW-GUIDE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1907.
Application filed May 17,1906. Serial N0- 317,360.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BALYS A. WADswon'rH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hale, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Guides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw guides and more particularly to guides used in cutting timber, the object being to provide a guide which can be quickly attached to the log to be cut, so that a perfectly square cut will be obtained, thereby saving a great amount of timbers.
Another object of my invention is to provide the guide with means for setting the same square on a log, so that a perfectly square cut will be made.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification Figure l is a rear perspective view of my improved guide. Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of my improved guide. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved guide showing it attached to the log. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the guide showing it attached to the log.
Referring to the drawings A, indicates the base which is formed out of any suitable material, but preferably of wood having angled side pieces B, secured on its top at one end adjacent each side which are connected together at their upper ends by a cross bar C, which prevents the same from spreading and the bar is provided with a central notch on its upper side, forming a sight for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
Strips D, are secured to the outside of the side piece B, and extends forward flush with the bar 0, and are provided with vertical slots D, the inner edges of which are flush with the edges of the base and side A sight E, is secured centrally between the side piece 13, on the base A, adjacent one end, which consists of a plate E, having a member E hinged thereto adjacent one end provided with an opening adjacent its outer end forming a sight opening for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
Openings A are formed in the base A, through which spikes are adapted to pass into the log for securing the same thereon.
The operation of the guide is as follows: Nails are driven into the log to be cut centrally adjacent one end and a lineman rod is held thereon in alinement with the spikes, then my improved guide is placed on the other end to be cut, the sight being lifted into a vertical position so that the user can take a sight through the opening and notch in the cross bar, so that the guide can be adjusted on the log in alinement with the longitudinal center and secured in that position by spikes which are driven through the opening in the base into the log. The saw is then placed in the slot and it will be readily seen that the log will be cut square.
Having thus iully'described my invention, what I claim as new and 'desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A saw-guide comprising a base provided with sides connected together by a crossbar, a sight formed in said crossbar and a sight secured on said base in alinement with the sight on the cross-bar.
2. A saw-guide comprising a base having sides projecting upwardly therefrom, slotted strips secured to said sides, a crossbar connecting said sides provided with a sight arranged on said base in alinement with said sight.
3. A saw guide comprising a base provided With,s1otted side members, a notched cross bar connecting said members forming a sight a folding sight arranged on said base in alinernent with said sight, for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with a base provided with sides connected together by a cross-bar, of slotted saw-guides secured to said sides, a sight point formed on said crossbar, a sight point mounted on said base, the two sight points being at right angles to the line of the sawguides, and means for securing said base on a log for the purpose described.
BALYS A. WADSWORTH.
Witnesses DARWIN HALE, PALLIC HALE.
