To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L'YNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Bridge, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the construction of steel safes and particularly to safes made of manganese steel and provided with rotatable doors; and the object of the invention is to provide improved means for fitting said doors when closed and locking the same in a closed position; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the improvement in the construction of safes hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a safe of the class specified, the section being taken through the body of the safe and through the door; Fig. 2 an inside view of the jamb and the door looking in the direction of the arrow :t of Fig. l, and showing door unlocked; Fig. 3 an inside View of the door; Fig. 4 a side view of a part of the inner portion of the door; and, Fig. 5 an inside view of part of the door jamb.
My improvement relates particularly to safes made of manganese or other hard steel, and in the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown it applied to a safe, the body portion of which is substantially spherical in form as shown at a in Fig. 1, and it will be understood that the body portion of the safe may be provided with any suitable base or support a as indicated in Fig. 1. The body portion of the safe is also provided at one side with the usual circular opening a around which is the jamb a, said jamb being extended inwardly to form an annular member a and the jamb walls are tapered from the outside inwardly to form a tapered or conical seat a in which the door I) when closed closely fits.
In safes of this class, the door 6 is made rotatable when seated or closed, and in practice it has been cus tomary heretofore to provide the door and the jamb thereof with interlocking devices of the bayonet joint type located between the outer and inner faces of the jamb and on the outer sides of the body of the door adjacent to the inner face thereof, but these interlocking devices, by reason of the fact, that the safe including the body portion thereof and the door were made of manganese steel were very diflicult to form and finish, and the chief, object of this invention is to provide intel-locking devices of the same class which are located differently and constructed difierently and by reason of their construction much more practical, much more effective and much more easily made and applied.
In my improvement, as hereinbefore stated, the jamb wall a is extended inwardly and forms an inwardly directed annular member a and the inner surfaces of the door jamb wall are conical or tapered inwardly from the outer to the inner face of the door jamb, and equally spaced on the inner face of the jamb wall (1 or the part a thereof, are cam blocks d which are segmental in form and the inner edges of which are provided with longitudinally arranged and wed ge-shaped segmental cams (P.
In securing the cam blocks d to the jamb wall a, or the part a thereof, sockets d are cast in the said jamb Wall, and in these sockets are placed inserts d which are cast therein and secured therein, and threaded bores d are formed in said inserts, and screws or bolts al are passed through the cam blocks d and into the inserts d".
The outer body portion of the door b is conical in form, but the inner part thereof consists of a cylindrical extension b which projects inwardly of the jamb wall a when the door is closed, and on the outer side surfaces thereof are formed equally spaced cam lugs 01' projections b having inclined inner surfaces b adapted to operate in connection with the corresponding surfaces on the cam portions (1 of the cam blocks d as clearly indicated in Fig. 5 and as shown in Fig. 1.
The inner conical surface of the jamb wall, or the part a thereof, is provided with longitudinally or axially arranged recesses b between the cam blocks d, to permit of the passage of the cam lugs or projections 11 on the door when said door is open and closed.
It will be observed that the object of casting the sockets d in the inner face of the jamb wall a, or the part a thereof, and in casting the inserts (Z therein is to avoid the necessity of drilling into the said jamb wall, or the part (1 thereof, in securing the cam blocks d in place.
In practice, the door b is supported on the body portion of the safe in the usual manner by a pivoted arm or other devices, not shown, and it will be understood that the door may be swung outwardly or inwardly, and is also rotatable in the usual manner, this opera tion being performed by the usual apparatus, not shown, and the said door is also provided with the usual central chamber e which opens inwardly and in which the lock bolts f, indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, are placed together with the means by which the said lock bolts are operated, but the particular means for supporting the door and enabling it to be swung inwardly and outwardly and also the particular means by which the door is rotated form no part of this invention and are therefore not shown and described, and this is also true of the means for operating the lock bolts, but it will be understood that, in practice, a time lock of which said bolts form a part is employed or said bolts may be employed with any kind or class of operating devices. In the practice of my invention, however, I form in the conical wall of the door adjacent to the outer surface thereof an annular groove g, broken at intervals by transverse partitions 9 said groove being shown in cross section in Fig. 1, and the groove and its partitions in Fig. 3, and if at any time an attempt be made to blow open the safe by drilling in between the outer edges of the door and the jamb wall thereof, or by the process of peaning or in any other way and pouring or inserting nitro-glycerin or other explosive substance or substances in between the door and jamb, the said substance or substances would be caught in the groove g, or the separate parts thereof, and only the outer edge of the door at the perimeter thereof could be blown off and this would not influence or affect the locking devices or open the door.
The door b is provided centrally of its outer surface with a lug or projection h which is angular in cross section and which, in practice, forms a part of the apparatus for supporting and swinging the door and also for rotating it on its axis but, as herein stated, the ordinary apparatus used for these purposes may be employed in connection with the lug or projection h or any other suitable form of apparatus may be substituted, my invention, relating as hereinbefore stated, to the interlocking parts d and b connected respectively with the inner face of the jamb and with the outside surfaces of the inner end portion of the door and in the groove 9 formed in the conical bearing surface of the door adjacent to the outer face thereof.
By employing the cam blocks (1 on the inner face of the jamb wall. of the door, as herein shown and described, I am enabled to finish the inner bearing surfaces of the jamb wall of the door and the corresponding surfaces of the door by grinding in the usual manner with less trouble and inconvenience and at less expense, the said surfaces being smooth and even throughout, and in this way a perfectly tight joint between the door and the jamb wall may be secured, a result which is not practical when a part of the looking devices or cam lugs or projections are formed on the inner bearing surface of the jamb wall. It will also be apparent that by employing the separate cam blocks d with their inclined inner cam portions (1 and the cam lugs or projections b on the door which operate in connection therewith I am enabled to make or secure a tighter fit for the door, the cam blocks (Z and the cam portions (1 thereof being capable of being formed in any desired manner in order to accomplish this result.
In machining doors and the jamb walls thereof, in safes of the class known as unmachinable safes or vaults, the ordinary methods of machining are entirely impractical, machining being done by grinding wheels, and after the doors and the jamb walls are ground to a certain gage fit, the door is placed in the jamb opening or fitted therein, and the jamb wall or door wall, or both being covered with a preparation of emery and oil, the door is rotated until there is a perfect metal fit between the same and the jamb wall. In order to do this it will be apparent that the cam blocks (Z must necessarily be secured to the inner face of the jamb wall after the door has been fitted as above described, for, if the cam blocks (Z were first placed in position, they would be knocked off in rotating the door by the locking lugs or projections b on the door, and for this reason, as above stated, the said cam blocks must be secured in position after the door has been fully ground and fitted by rotating the same in the jamb wall as hereinbefore described.
My'invention does not in anyway affect or alter the means for operating the door or swinging it open or shut or for rotating it.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A steel safe having rotatable door, the bodyportion of which is conical in form and provided with a smooth surface throughout, said door being oi": relatively great depth, said door being also provided with an inwardly directed cylindrical extension which projects in wurdly of the jamb wall when the latter is closed, and is provided at its side with equally spaced locking lugs or projections, the jamb wall being tapered to correspond with the taper of the body portion of the door and being of a depth equal to the depth of the body portion of the door and being smooth and even throughout its surface except at the inner part thereof where it is provided with axially arranged recesses to permit of the passage of the locking lugs or projections on the door, the inner face of the jamb wall being also provided with cum blocks which are secured thereto and in connection with which the locking lugs or projections on the cylindrical extension of the door operate when the said door is closed and rotated.
2. A steel safe having a rotatable door, the body portion of which is conical in form and provided with a smooth surface throughout, said door being of relatively great depth, said door being also provided with an inwardly -directed cylindrical extension which projects inwardly of the jamb wall when the latter is closed, and is provided at its side with equally spaced locking lugs or projections, the jamb wall being tapered to correspond with the taper of the body portion of the door and being of a depth equal to the depth or the body portion of the door and being smooth and even throughout its surface except at the inner part thereof where it is provided with axially arranged recesses to permit of the passage oi the locking lugs or projections on the door, the inner face of the jamb wall being also provided with wedgeshuped cam blocks which are secured thereto after the door has been fully fitted and seated by rotating the same in the jamb wall and in connection with which the locking lugs or projections on the cylindrical extension of the door operate when the said door is closed and rotated, said cam blocks being secured to inserts cast in the inner face portion of the door jamb,
