Description

DENNIS LANE, OF MONTPELIER, VERMONT. Letters Patent No. 86,556, dated Feblfuwry 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ef the same.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DENNIS LANE, of Montpelier, in the county of Washington, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gates and Guides for Water-Il heels; and' I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Iligure l of the drawings is a representation of -a plan view of my device, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof. v v
The object of my invention is to construct, for use with the Jonval turbine water-Wheel, a more perfect and effective gate than has heretofore been devised therefor, and also to form, in combination with such gate andl wheel, suitable water-chutes for the water before it reaches the gates.
The letters A, of thel drawings, represent inclined planes, or chutes, down which the water passes to the gates. They are formed by cutting out the upper surface of the wheel-casing, or, as is preferable, by casting such casing in the shape represented.
The letter B is the gate proper. t is constructed of a flat plate of metal, turned up at nearly right angles, the upright part of which lits closely against the shoulder ofthe chute, and the horizontal part ts to the bottom of said chute. The extreme horizontal end of said gate is rounded upward, to admit of a' ready flow of water thereunder when partially raised, so as to render it an aid in raising the gate.
The letter C is a slotted guide, adjusted by a setscrew to a flange, formed 'on the wheel-casing, on the inner side of the opening in said casing, through which the water passes to,the wheel. This tlange is marked D on the drawings.4 By means of this guide and setscrew, the gate maybe tightened in its place, or loosened, at pleasure. l l
These gates and guides are adjusted to the wateropenings in the wheel-casing, in such manner and number that there shall be a guide and gate ateach opening.
to the rods F, next mentioned.
The rods F are connected with rods E, in the manner shown, at their lower ends, andtheir upper ends rest, respectively, on the arms of the sleeve G, hereinafter described. I form a screw on the upper portion of rods F, respectively extending nearly to the heads thereof, and adapt thereto nuts, as shown at a. These screws and nuts" are designed for use in adjusting the position of gates B,
Letter'H is a sleeve, fitting loosely around the cylinder K, that encloses the shaft of the water-wheel. It is formed with arms, extending outward, as shown, and rests upon and rotates slightly upon a shoulder in cylinder K, as represented at c.
Letter O isa rod, screwed into the surface of sleeve G, and is adapted to be Vunited with a rope, or chain, or rod, by means of its eye d.
To open the gates, I raise the rod O, arid thereby the sleeve G and all its attachments. By lowering the rod O, the gates are closed.'
One important advantage secured by my device is tbat, by the' use of the guides' and set-screws, adjoining the gates, I can tightensaid gates at will, Whenever, from wear or other cause, it becomes important or desirable so to do.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gate for the Jonval turbine water-wheel, having chutes A, gate B, guides C, flange D, with the set- `s`crews operating therewith, rods E and E, sleeve G, and cylinder K, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantiallyv as specitled. i
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name, in the presence of two witmesses.
DENNIS LANE.
Witnesses E. M; GUERNSEY, M. TAPLIN.
